CBGB's planning summer-long concert series

According to this story, the legendary club, CBGB's is hoping to organize a "last-ditch" 30-date festival featuring many of the notable acts who have performed at the venue. Among those being courted are Patti Smith, David Byrne, Green Day and the Beastie Boys. Owner Hilly Kristal does caution that no acts are confirmed yet, but expects to have a lineup in the next few weeks.

The legendary NYC club which played home to bands like the Ramones, Patti Smith, Blondie, Television and literally hundreds of others artists through the years may be forced to close its doors. The situation arose due to a dispute with Bowery Residents Committee which holds a 45-year lease on the building. CBGB's is their lone commercial tenant; their rent feud dates back five years, when the committee went to court to collect more than $300,000 in back rent from the club

The committee, according to Krystal, apparently raised the rent without telling him, as well as several other "tactics" to gain more $$ from him, I can't remember exactly what. So shut your fuckign mouth, you little bitch. Try getting a job as opposed to wasting time online here like a fucking crybaby, maybe you can make some cash to pay off your mom...I mean your landlord.

1 you can not raise the rent without a proper notice in paper given to a tenant. this just looks like bad book keeping.

That is false, and if Kristal really said that, then he is a liar. It is illegal in New York City to raise the rent without prior notification to the tenants, and in fact the BRC did tell Kristal that they plan to increase it to $55 a month, if my memory serves me right. What's more, CBGB owed months of backrent to the BRC, and it was well within the commission's right to demand that the club pay up. Kristal needs to stop bitching about this posthaste, because it's his own fault that the club is in trouble. Besides, should CBGB close, its space would be used as a center to provide aid to the homeless and people with HIV. I think that's a slightly more worthy cause than saving a club that doesn't put on quality shows anymore. In short, you are the one who needs to "shut your fuckign mouth." You are an idiot.

The homeless and AIDS-stricken get too much attention as is, hahahaha...besides, it's a fucking NY landmark. You'd be surprised at how few venues there are remaining in a New York. It's all part of the plot to make NY boring and impossible to live in. If this was the Fireside Bowl in Chicago or wherever every Larry Arms and Alkaline Tio fan in existance would be shitting their pants and "wha-wha"ing their way to some benefit show or whatnot.

I don't care about your "punk" bullshit I've been to the place countless times (more times than you I'm willing to bet) and judging from your comment I wouldn't be suprised you were 12. as for good venues in New York...the continental is good for a small show and the Tribeca and Knitting Factory are good places to see bigger shows.

I don't really get how CGBG could be so strapped for cash. With all the mechandise they sell with the logo in Hot Topic? I see so many kids walking around wearing their t-shirts, I would think the royalties would be huge.

I've seen people say this same thing everytime CBGB's $ problems come up on this site. What you have to understand is that the CBGB's merch you see places at places like Hot Topic is more than likely Boot Legged.

Come on, just let CBGB's die before it becomes a Graceland-esque tourist trap for mainstream punk. Better for it to live on in memory than be perverted by cheap sentiment. Although I guess when it finally does close it'll be even cooler for lame celebrities to show off their $30 CB's shirts. What a joke. The kind of punk that made the venue famous is long dead, let it die as well.
