After failing to obtain a last minute reprieve, Hilly Kristal, owner of legendary New York City club CBGB's is considering a move a little further south.
According to one source, Kristal is currently in negotiations to secure a new home near the Aladdin Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Specifically, the Desert Passage, a 475,000-square-foot retail and entertainment strip that surrounds the Aladdin. The club had been fighting for some time to obtain a renewal of their lease with the Bowery Residents Commitee and despite obtaining support from local government and many fans, was denied a lease renewal in September. Moving CBGB''s anywhere out of NY sounds like a crime and moving it to Vegas of all places sounds like a total cash out of everything that CBGB's created. 1+ Reply

vegas cheaper plus now it will just be a tourist attraction maybe elton john and Michael Jackson will play there cus they created punk rock you know
TheRevisionist (December 4, 2005)
why vegas? you would think the people that go there (for the most part) would not care about shows. or do more young people go there than i realize (again, not that only young people go to shows, but you know what i mean) ? 4+ Replies

This all makes sense. Vegas is where all the old, tired, and played out performers go. So why not send the old, tired, and played out venues too? 1+ Reply

fucking retarded. i don't give a rats ass if this place closes specifically for this reason. it's obviously just about the money, not the history or the music. i'll say it again, fuck CBGB's, it died a long time ago. 4+ Replies

Wow, I swear to god someone called this in the original CBGB's closure thread. Terrible, terrible idea. I would be disguested if I was one of the punk bands who reunited in the CBGB"s benifit and this is what they decided to do. Vegas is about as punk as the last 15 years of music. -Dante 3+ Replies

fuck yeah, Las Vegas would be my first pick if they moved it. Studio 54 did the same thing and it is now considered legendary in Las Vegas 2+ Replies

Isn't the beauty of CBGB's the history of it? Didn't all that history happen in its current location? Who cares if it moves to Las Vegas, it will just be a new venue in Las Vegas that shares the name of a once historic venue in NYC. In my opinion, the area where CBGB's is now and whatever moves into that spot will have tons more historic value then where the new CBGB's will be. Either find a way to stay where it is or just not exist. This just proves it's all about the money.

Las Vegas isn't to the south of New York... I'm surprised the move isn't to California. JXS 2+ Replies

NYC has offered them a new space in uptown Manhattan numerous times, but they've said no everytime. So Vegas is just bullshit 4+ Replies

who cares about piece of shit club let me get this straight they cant really afford new york but can afford vegas besides to major mainstream casinos were the demographic is usually rich old men with unlimited amount of money and old people. Sounds great 1+ Reply

Everyones perception of Vegas is hilarious. Especially the theories that this won't fit the right demographic. Seriously, keep these comments coming, 'cus I'm thoroughly entertained.
Someone (December 4, 2005)
I got to say it makes a lot of sense. A lot of other american icons do really well in Vegas. They should open the vegas CBGBs and use the revenue (t shirt sales, $10 beers etc) to keep the NY one open.
Someone (December 4, 2005)
does anyone know what that stuck in bakersfield song social distortions been playing is?
JohnnyDanger (December 4, 2005)
It's not like a restaurant, or a sports team. You can't just move it. No one cares about the name and the management sucks. Its about the atmosphere and slum inside, and that can not be moved nor recreated anywhere else at any other time.
fuck_off_nazi_punks (December 4, 2005)
first, i dont think CBGBs should move, it belongs in NY. Second, why fuckin LA?why not san fransisco, or berkely, or somwhere where punk is still big. 4+ Replies
kingofpain (December 4, 2005)
This seems reallly odd to me. I remember reading an interview with Hilly Kristal a few months back that said he had gotten offers to move CBGB's to Vegas, but he didn't like the idea. I thought for sure that if he were to move it, it was going to stay in New York.
fox82 (December 4, 2005)
Yeah, but apart from the Ramones and the NYHC bands in the 80s, CBGB's was also a landmark for corporate crap like Johnny Thunders, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and shit like that, you know? All them 'the' bands would like Vegas. I'm sure they'd do it up in a retro NY way and add fucking waterfountains and slotmachines in the toilets. They could also hire Ray Capo to spout krishna shit as you walk in. 6+ Replies

PROPER WAY TO MAKE PEOPLE NOT WANT TO HELP CBGB "WE WILL JUST WAIT TILL THEY GET EVICTED THATS ALL [Much love from Marty Munsch and http://www.PUNKROCKRECORDS.COM]
I was handed this attempt to try to keep me from running MY show that I booked at CBGB's August 21 2005. The bands that were booked PLAYED for FREE and expected NO return or monies.
Dear Marty:
I represent CBGB and am writing you in reference to the performance of "The Blanks '77" on Sunday, August 21 at CBGB. There are two issues that have arisen:
1) It states on your myspace.com page that there will be a "Re-Broadcast" of the show from Punk Rock Records August 23 at 12:00 cmt. " CBGB has not authorized the broadcast, recording or re-broadcast of any performance, including this one. This show may not be broadcast without an agree show rest of comment 2+ Replies

las vegas has one of the fastest growing public school systems in the country. it's expanding like no one's business and the most noticeable thing about this is the growing number of first generation kids from families who have moved there. 3+ Replies

So is it still open right now? Aren't there shows atleast til the end of the month?
Someone (December 4, 2005)
lol, you people really need to visit las vegas before you comment but I gotta say, who needs CBGB's when we got the Double Down Saloon - one of the greatest punk rock bars/venues in the world. 1+ Reply

They will probally try to do a hard rock cafe type thing and setup CBGBs in various cities.
Someone (December 5, 2005)
Yo, it'd be way cooler if they moved to reno and then fall silent got their old singer back and fucking ripped and thrashed everyone's heads off and ended with a sick guitar squeel that lasted until jesus fell out of the sky for being fucking thrashed!

If Hilly left the CBGB name and made another small rundown club in Las Vegas that allowed punk rock bands to perform and just changed the venue's name would you all feel the same way? 1+ Reply

This smells like the first of many CBGB's that are gonna start appearing all over the country. Don't say I didn't warn ya!
sickboi (chris) (December 5, 2005)
Hmmm..... Has this always been in the works and the "benefit shows" were nothing that a way for the club to get further attention? (there are some peopel out there that have never heard of it.) And the rasied funds could possibly be funding the move? This is truly disgusting. I bet all of those bands that did the free shows are fucking pissed. 2+ Replies

How is it that punk is supposed to be so nihilistic and Fuck You but yet there are so many dogmatic rules and laws to abide by? Just curious.

Wasn't the Alladin the casino that kicked out Linda Ronstadt for making claims against the war on terror? Yeah, CBGBs is gonna have a good time with the Alladin management telling what they can say and do. | Features
