I like some of them; there seems to be a pretty vocal anti-street punk crowd in general though; I've never really figured out why.

Well here's why I don't like them. The musical complexity of pop punk, the lyrical depth of Anti-Flag, and fashion consciousness that rivals metalcore. Take the worst parts of 3 seperate genres and throw them together and you get street punk. Fuck you! Oi Oi Oi!

The lyrics are probably what bothers me most. I like somewhat literate/different lyrics, but all of Casualties' (for example) stuff is the most simple trite shit I could possibly think of. Also, there's way too much of an emphasis on fashion sometimes. With that being said, Casualties appeared in a Warped Tour article in my local newspaper and I was there in the background. ;) PUNK ROCK LOOOOOOOOOOOVEEEEEEEEE.

Dude, there are more street punk bands than casualties (whom I like). To say that they all have the lyrical depth of Anti-Flag is just so stupid. Yes the majority of them spend time spiking up their hair but who gives a fuck. Why do you think everyone should look the same? And musical complexity?!? Its fucking punk rock, its not supposed to be complex dumbass. Here's my advice: Listen to bands like: Blitz, 4-Skins, Sham 69, The Business, Cockney Rejects, Cock Sparrer, GBH. all that old Oi!. Then start listening to some of the more modern bands that follow that lead: Oxymoron, all of the bands on Punkcore, etc. Go to street-punk shows. After you do that i'm sure you'll have a different perspective on street-punk (because right now I just think you're talking out of your ass (again (ie: your stance on Richard Pryor))).

But what about bands like the Ramones, or even early clash...they were totally simplistic and all about a look? I've played in a couple "street punk" bands or so we were labeled....and honestlly there can be a simplistic song write style....but look at a band like action, the have more time change ups then you can shake a fist at.thats not very simple. it's seems like bands that "look" street punk get grouped together because of a stlye of dress more then anything.......also there are a fair amout of "street punk" guitarists that can play rings around most other guitarists...both from Action, the guy from Damage Case, Brad from Complete Control, Scott from the Unseen, Nathan From the Cropknox, Jason from Monster Squad, Carlos from Lab Rats, Joshah(?) from the Havoc, Marty from LCB......... I agree with skaboom when it comes to a lot of streetpunk bands not really pushing the envelope and all just going with the same chords and singing about getting drunk all the time. Drinking songs are alright every album or so, but when you have 7 out of 13 songs about drinking and beating crusties, then it gets tiresome. When it comes to political streetpunk bands, some are doing very well. Action and the Krum Bums are GREAT political band and in the past there have been great political streetpunk bands, I hope we all still remember The Pist? I think that streetpunk is subject to alot of shit talking due to it's history of nothing but apathy, getting drunk constantly, fighting, and having a dress code. But, alot of bands have been pushing past that to expand their genre. Hopefully soon we'll see a little something more coming from the streetpunk kids. Jerry

I just saw a global threat live with strike anywhere and paint it black and they sounded terrible. maybe it was just in comparison, i'm not sure. I used to like them a few years back when I was really into the casualties

Me too! It can get a little old, yes, but Cheap Sex is an excellent band. Probably my favorite on Punkcore. Followed closely by LCB.

I love Punkcore. They consistently put out good street punk albums. And for all the stupid motherfuckers saying "it's just a fashion statement" and "its not complex enough" why don't you just fuck off. There has always been a 'fashion' associated with punk. You people are just pissed that you don't have enough balls to get a fucking mohawk (you know you want one). And when the fuck was punk ever supposed to be complex?!?. Go listen to Mars Volta if you want that shit. Street punk is fast, aggresive, and fun as fuck to see live. So fuck off.

I certainly wasn't saying that (not saying that you were pointing me out). I just think a lot of the lyrics are way too simple sometimes, and the concepts conveyed in the songs are really too simple for their own good. Granted, the Lower Class Brats have pretty decent lyrics, but stuff like the Casualties is just really really bad. I really do want to like street-punk a lot more than I do, though, I just wish they had more to say sometimes. The mohawks and fashion sense I don't mind as much. There's always going to be that subculture, and I really respect that idea. We just need to see some growth in the genre. BTW, if there are some better streetpunk bands out there, do tell me. I've been looking for names.

Try The Pist, Krum Bums, Action, and there's allot of foreign bands with a street punk sound that are some of the most intelligent bands you'll ever hear, like Riietysyt (I know that's not spelled right, but they're FInnish and spell shit wierd. Do what you can with it. :) ) Jerry

A lot of bands on Punkcore aren't 'technically' street punk. I don't know if I would even call Cheap Sex street punk. In response to your previous comment check out: Varukers, Aus Rotten (if you're looking for substantial lyrics, I think they have the best political lyrics in all of punk rock), Virus, A Global Threat. The main reason I like street-punk so much is because the shows are fun as fuck. I don't really care about lyrics so much in the street punk genre.
