Emusic snags SST catalog, other services to follow

The Orchard, one of the largest independent distributors has signed a deal with the legendary SST Records to bring their catalog online to digital download services.

The label's catalog includes classic material from Descendents, Hüsker Dü, Black Flag, Minutemen, Dinosaur Jr., Soundgarden, fIREHOSE, All, Saccharine Trust and Bad Brains and tracks from 94 SST releases in total will appear on pioneering service eMusic for two weeks beginning today. On January 24th, the catalog will also begin to appear on other services including iTunes, Napster, MSN, MusicMatch, Real/Rhapsody, and Yahoo! as well as mobile phone services.

the ONLY way to listen to music is out of an AM/FM clock radio. nothing beats the old school sounds of songs being played on a talk radio station. thats why i have a special set up for my stereo and ipod and computer where it plugs into my alarm clock so i can hear it the way most artists intend - jones the bones - stevejones8770@yahoo.com

People just become huge sandy vagina's when it comes to re-mastering things for CD that NEED to be remastered... It's not like this is the metal world where people like Ozzy go and have different people play the bass and drums for Blizzard Of Ozz & etc, or Dave Mustaine goes in and re-records certain parts over again for Rust In Peace and Peace Sells.

yeah it just pisses me off when they add songs, and when they change the artwork and the liner notes etc. it seems, in almost ever situation, that its just a way to make money for the label.

I don't know, if the album truly is a classic then it’s nice to have some liner notes from a band member talking about their memories of the record and I have no problem with having added demos or b-sides to the original. I guess some have a problem with the demos and b-sides being added at the end like with the Ramones re-masters but it can also be done classy like with the Elvis Costello re-masters where it’s an entire second disc. I pretty much have no problem with re-masters unless it’s like with a record that’s only two or four years old and has had no previous problem with the sound quality... then that bullshit is just for the profits.

i agree with the ramones/elvis costello thing. with the elvis costello cds, its like an added bonus. with the ramones its like an annoyoing bonus. i still like to see the artwork/liner notes done orignally.

the dinosaur jr stuff hasn't been on sst for a significant amount of time. any reason why they can use the material as part of their catalog even though the albums aren't printed by them anymore?

No. J Mascis bought the rights to those albums. SST no longer has the right to distribute Dinosaur Jr releases in any form.

I think the mention of Dinosaur Jr. is a mistake. SST cannot offer music it no longer has the rights to, especially in the cases of bands like Sonic Youth, DInosaur Jr, or Meat Puppets, where the albums have been reissued by other labels. I don't have emusic, but its possible that Dinosaur Jr's stuff is there if emusic offers the Merge catalog, since Merge reissued the early Dinosaur Jr stuff.

I'd disagree. There's a lot of animosity between Jello Biafra and the rest of the band, while there is none between the Descendents. It's almost a certainty that they'll record new material in a few years, when Milo feels like it. The chances of them doing extensive touring is pretty low, though, which is a shame.

Not true. Descendents have ALWAYS been a part-time band for Milo. In the 80s he was just able to tour a little more. In that effect they've never really broken up. Milo lives across the country and has a non-rock and roll job so it's hard for him to tour. But it's definitely not out of the question.

Despite my love for the Descendents, I would have to go with The Clash as being the greatest punk band ever. "Greatest" is a big, big term, and I think I'll stick with The Clash.

I love both bands, but if you were to apply the term "great" to one punk band, it'd have to be the Clash. They accomplished much more in their career, which brings the band greater to "greatness" in my opinion.

Yeah, this is what I was thinking. Even though its quite cliched, the Clash managed to influence a ton of people, and released a remarkable variety of different-sounding records. In the terms of how they are looked at in history, The Clash would be worthy of an entire chapter whereas the Descendents would be a sub-heading.
