2006 to see re-release of Gorilla Biscuits classic, "Start Today," unreleased Rival Schools, more

Walter Schreifels has announced some plans for the new year.

Among the most notable is a plan to re-release Gorilla Biscuit's classic second full length, Start Today. The album was originally released in 1989 and has been claimed as a singular influence by legions of melodic hardcore acts. More details have not been revealed but are expected soon.

In addition, a previously unreleased album from Schreifels' band, Rival Schools is also expected. The band split up after the release of their sole Island full length, United By Fate.

Plans for the new year do not end there, however, as Walter is planning more material including a "live acoustic" full length, a solo acoustic release and a "rock band" release. Schreifels' most recent release was the 2004 full length, Run To Be Born, released with his band Walking Concert. He also continues to work with his independent record label, Some.

Have you seen the way every element clashes in that thing? The black and white and rainbow colors look like shit together, and what's with the GB logo interspersed in the name. Liking the band is one thing, defending a hideous piece of art is another.

Pretty good album, but really all they could do is turn the volume (or whatever) up so it's louder. As you can see, i know nothing about "mixing" records.

A "new" Rival Schools album? Hell yes! Oddly enough I was just reading a zine from about 5 years ago where Walter says in an interview: "Yeah, there's a whole unreleased Quicksand record done. I'm like the king of not releasing stuff. I pretty much have a vault of unreleased stuff." He also goes on to mention that he plans to release most of it within the next year. Better late than never, here's hoping Quicksand is next!

if it is what i heard i didn't think it sounded a lot like any of the other Quicksand stuff. being a fan of Quicksand and Gorilla Biscuits and not being moved much by Rival Schools (though i never saw em live) it did not make me freak out with joy to hear it. did that make sense? i think it is readily available in a low-fi form. sounded like somebody made the MP3s off a cassette. that being said i would buy it if properly released. somebody played it for me, and i have no idea where they dug it up. i assume it's all over p2p.

Ahem, Resolve. Seriously, Resolve blows everything else out of the water. It has a depth and a cohesive sense of purpose that just isn't there on the rest of their stuff. I'd have to say Feelings is close, though.

amen, brother. preach it. everybody always tells me i'm crazy when i say that, but i truly believe that album has a certain something the others don't (don't get me wrong i love the wagon, my next two favorites are let's talk about feelings and then hoss). I think it may have to do with Ken Stringfellow as that is the only lagwagon release he plays on, and once when i was talking to the bassist about the live album they were about to do (the live in a dive from last year) he said they had been thinking of having him play a song or two with them from that album when they recorded that night since he also sang back-up and there are parts to those songs nobody can sing since Ken was a falsetto and they just don't play those songs live. Yeah, so, all of that bullshit and i love how the album flows seamlessly (to me anyway). Blah.

Rival Schools wasn't his "next band"... he followed Gorilla Biscuits with Moondog, Quicksand, World's Fastest Car, and The Motorcycles before forming Rival Schools (as well as ghostwriting most of the first CIV album by most accounts). 2. All of these "unreleased" albums have been quite easily found online for the past few years. You can get the entire unreleased Rival Schools album most easily. A lot of cool music from his so-called vault can be grabbed at www.unitedbywalter.com. 3. The Gorilla Biscuits reissue is necessary. That album could use a serious remastering job, plus the word on the street is it'll have expanded liner notes, etc. which is totally cool for a record as influential/classic as Start Today. -devoted Walter fan

not directed at you, but....... in this world of kids buying CDs, did the Gorilla Biscuits 7" somehow become their first full length or an i being senile? directed at you; i thought they never actually were moondog and that infamous 7" was just early Quicksand demos? is a Start Today reissue really just an excuse for Rev to do a limited colored vinyl run? in closing, i do miss seeing Quicksand at City Gardens.

I know rival schools have more than a few b-sides they could collect as well as split recording material they had. There was also some really well recorded live radio performances that I thought should be released in some form. So how new is this record? wyzo
