Marathon have broken up. The Reignition Records recording artist announced it today via a message on their Myspace blog. No reason was given for the breakup and the band will be playing their last scheduled show this Sunday in New York City with None More Black and New Mexican Disaster Squad. The band said that they will play "somewhere between 1 and 10 more shows within the next few months."

now THIS is sad news...much worse than the Champion break-up "Marathon" was the best punk rock album of 2005 BY FAR....at least I got to see them once in Chicago. Bummer Golden gun in the facility? or proximity mines in the complex?
P-Fresh (February 1, 2006)
This band was going to on to make more great records. I know it. Guess they won't, now. Goddamnitt.
iseriouslyhateyou (February 1, 2006)
anybody know anything about their old (?) label Red Leader Records? they never really update their website, and rarely release anything. -mike
Fatty_Arbuckle (February 1, 2006)
i'm listening to their stuff on Myspace, never heard 'em before. They were good. Fuck.
Someone (February 1, 2006)
the lead singer used to be in de la hoya....a much better band, but marathon were still fucking awesome. check out www.de-la-hoya.com

Well this blows. It's really going to put a monkey wrench to what I thought would be an enjoyable evening watching this band, NMDS, and NMB. However, I know they probably put on a great farewell performance so I'm a little more anticpated on checking their live set now. Ramo

i saw these guys with a wilhelm scream a year or two ago. they were really impressive, and im sorry that it had to end this way. they should go a basement show tour or something really fucking awesome, so at least they can go out with a fucking bang!
Someone (February 1, 2006)
I'm pretty sure this weekend isn't their OFFICIAL last show, it's odd for a band to be having their last show not in their home area. They are planning on playing a few more shows throughout the year and possibly one would be in their home area of Rochester, or somewhere upstate where they live (i.e. Syracuse or Ithaca).

So when a band announces that they are breaking up, but playing 1 or 10 more shows, is that like the period after you break up with your girlfriend but still have sex about 1 or 10 more times?
Someone (February 1, 2006)
Bring back De La Hoya!!! (Aarons old band) now that band was fuckin incredible. marathon was good but couldnt hold a candle to De La Hoya. www.de-la-hoya.com
AlmostPunkEnough (February 1, 2006)
ahhh fuckin balls. these guys were damn good, the s/t disc was really good. "Closing Time at the Distortion Factory" was among my favorite songs from last year. fuck this i'm goin dancing...
AlmostPunkEnough (February 1, 2006)
on a much more hilarious note: http://www.youtube.com/w/Video-Of-Some-Guy-(Ryan-Hart)-Singing-Si lverstein's-Smashed?v=1NcvDsFWCrA&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Emyspace %2Ecom%2F that is the funniest/lamest thing i've seen in a while. i guess i gotta give him some credit for making an fuckin ass of himself on national tv... though he's presumably just an attention whore. regardless, it's goddamn ammusing. someone go on and do 'Heart A Tact' or 'o.k.f.m.d.o.a.' or something next season.
InaGreendase (brian) (February 1, 2006)
Damn. I still contest Marathon was a letdown, but I really think these guys had a few great albums in them.
radioXwaves (February 1, 2006)
this honestly bums me out. they had potential. least I got to see them twice and get some good photos
corporatecriminal (February 1, 2006)
Disappointing news, for sure. For anyone who hasn't listened to them, I'd recommend it. Their self-titled album is excellent and their EP has two bad-ass songs on it. Their lyrics were intelligent and political (which is rare to have both). They seemed like cool guys, too.
Someone (February 1, 2006)
Damn. These guys were so rad. I've listened to all their stuff a lot and seen them a bunch of times. I remember when I first heard them and I couldn't belive that they were possibly a local band because there was nothing in our area that sounded like that. They always seemed to have a smile and tried to put on a great show. The lyrics are amazing and certainly an inspiration for me. Best of luck to all those guys in whatever they do in the future. Today was a bad day that just got worse. Nick Dynamite

I was just thinking about this band the other day. I was glad to have been able to book them a show back in 2004. Great stuff and great lyrics.
Someone (February 1, 2006)
FUCK! I just got into this band last year and their S/T album is constantly playing in my car. Shitty news to wake up to...
GreatStoryOfApathy (February 1, 2006)
The self titled was my favorite cd of 05. I also enjoyed Propagandhi, Suicide Machines, etc. but Marathon's self titled was the one I couldn't stop listening to. (I got into the new Against Me! in 06, that probably would have topped Marathon)
Someone (February 1, 2006)
Listen punk might have died years ago... but there are still going to be people at the shows
Someone (February 1, 2006)
They were a great band and a great bunch of guys. Hopefully Aaron will pop up again in a new band some time down the road. He has a lot of talent that will be wasted if it all ends here.
dazed (February 1, 2006)
I never really got into their EP but they were nice dudes and had a killer show when they played here in FL. I'll have to check out the full-length although that'll be a double-edged sword if I love it cause they're not gonna make another one.
Someone (February 2, 2006)
This is Ross from ReIgnition Recordings (formerlly of Law of Inertia Productions). A lot of people have been asking me how I feel about Marathon breaking up. All I can say is that in 8 years of working in music, I haven't worked with a band with as much talent and heart as Marathon. If you're curious as to what other bands I've worked with, go to www.reignition.com. You'll see that they're in very good company and this statement is emboldened by that fact. I am truly honored to have been a part of Marathon's days playing for us. The self-titled record I released for them in May is my single favorite record I've ever done, and that I probably ever will. Marathon may die, but they will live on in at least one person's stereo. Mine. -R

This blows. Their CD is the only one getting daily plays on my iPod lately. I was really looking forward to seeing them help revive the melodic punk scene. |
