Sex Pistols bow out of Hall of Fame Ceremony

The Sex Pistols have responded to their hall of fame induction with a handwritten note posted today:

"Next to the SEX PISTOLS rock and roll and that hall of fame is a piss stain. Your museum. Urine in wine. Were not your monkey and so what? Fame at $25,000 if we paid for a table or $15,000 to squeak up in the gallery, goes to a non-profit organization selling us a load of old famous.

Congradulations. If you voted for us, I hope you noted your reasons. Your anonymous as judges. but your still music industry people. Were not coming. Your not paying attention. Outside the shit-stem is a real SEX PISTOL.

The legendary band were named as inductees into the Rock'n'Roll Hall Of Fame last year. Some of their peers also inducted include the Ramones and the Clash.

the response to this could go either way. one way is the "oh so punk" sarcastic comment, and the other would be the "don't mock it, it's a worthy political statement about the music industry." i'm leaning toward the latter at this point, but didn't their tour a few years ago charge like fifty bucks a ticket? i doubt at this point it's an attempt to get PR, as they're already famous enough. eh i dunno. i'm drinking.

touche. i give them credit for being one of the first punk bands and influencing some of the greater ones, butr they had ONE cd. ONE cd which wasnt at all that good. i like 3 songs off the cd. people tend to remember this band for the last 12 shows they played (on the US tour)...people always fail to remember that they were a band in there death throws at that point (if you've ever been in a band then you know how hard it is to play when you hate everyones guts). As for Sid's playing....have YOU ever tried to play bass while detoxing cold turkey? pretty hard check out the "live in Sweden" bootleg...they were, in fact, a really tight live band.

Awesome. Through all of his bullshit, you can't deny that John Lydon has never ceased to be himself. Even with his bad solo album and weird TV shows- That's just stuff he wanted to do. I mean, Lydon has always been honest, even when cashing-in. He admitted the reunion tour of a few years ago was just to make the band members some cash, so whether you agree with it or not you can't argue he wasn't honest. Joe Strummer, however, although he meant well, was preaching class war and having his photo taken on public buses for the Rock Against the Rich movement in the late 80's, before going home to his huge mansion in Holland Park. It's so easy to point fingers at people and label them hypocrites that it really isn't worth arguing about, as it will always be a matter of opinion, not fact, in the end. As for your comment about how the band must care about the ceremony because Steve Jones said it, if you knew anything about the Pistols you'd know that the members don't exactly get on very well (they pretty much hate each other) so it's not at all unusual for different members to have completely different viewpoints and opinions on the same thing.

i think the pistols anger was just that. anger without a real insight or expansion on what those feelings entailed. it doesn't make it any less genuine but i can see how that can be miscontrued as manufactured or forced compared to the clash who explored those feelings more in depth. both were great bands though and i'm in the camp (small one it looks like) of admiring both bands almost equally.

Exactly as Scott said, while Lyndon has made some decent records, everything he's done recently (and in the past, whoa!) has been pretty shitty on a moral basis. The first, and most important rule of the DIY ethic (at least in my book) is making it possible for EVERYONE to be able to go to a show if they feel like it. While I can see why a bigger show at a bigger venue can go into the 15-20 range I cannot imagine how in the fucking world a "punk" band can justify charing 50 dollars for a ticket. Joe Strummer was still playing Irving Plaza up to his death. The mere fact that you spent so much time thinking about how great the Sex Pistols were/are and din't realize eventually that you were horribly, horribly wrong just goes to show that you're a doofus. Whether is was the "unpunk" thing to do is irrelevant because Lydon (don't know who this Lyndon fellow is) said they were doing it to cash in because they never got paid from the early days. Regardless of what you think their reasons are or how you feel about their move to make such a statement, one thing can be said: that move was undoubtedly Sex Pistols. The reason for that is because of how it's setup. A band or performer is not eligible for induction untill 25 years after their debut album comes out. So yeah it takes a while for folks to get inducted. And I think this who thing with The Sex Pistols is just really stupid and continues to make John Lyndon just look really sad at this point. Yeah they were extreamly important in the late 1970's and yes they do deserve a spot in the R N' R HOF for that. So just shut your damn mouths and accecpt the accolades. They should of just showed up at the ceremony, said a real quick thank you and left it at that. No need to perform. The Clash made it clear from the minute their induction was announced they wouldn't do that. No one expects the Pistols to do that either if they don't want to. Your getting inducted anyway whether you go to the ceremony or not. None of this current publicity stunt will change that part of it. But no! Mr. Lydon had to post a really dumb "note" to drum what little publicity they can still get in what's left of the bands carrer. I'm sure the next thng we will hear now is about yet another reunion tour that will probably tank like previous ones because we all have grown up, gotten over these guys and moved on to better bands. "the sex pistols were put together by malcolm maclaren." not really. the original lineup of the group (jones, cook, matlock, nightingale) recruited maclaren to be their manager since the band hung out in his shop often. all maclaren did was tell them to get a real lead singer so the band, NOT the manager, found john lydon and brought him aboard. in fact, aside from getting them gigs and publicity screwing them out of money, maclaren was not involved in any part of the group at all. hmm, isnt that what a manager is SUPPOSED to do? 2. "the sex pistols were on a major label." what sellouts! nevermind the fact that there was no such thing as independent labels back then, these guys are sellouts. nevermind the fact that both the clash and the ramones were on major labels (the clash were signed to a subsidiary of sony music, the ramones to warner bros. yes, the SAME warner brothers that the sex pistols were signed to!) oh, i guess they COULD have just recorded their songs themselves and released it themselves but this band was about questioning the british hierarchy and demanding change. it's hard to do that when no one can find your record. 3. "this is a publicity stunt". oh, really? for what? for that album theyre about to release, or the big tour theyre about to go on, or maybe the movie about the band that's about to come out? wait a minute, none of these things are on the horizon at all! i could see this making any sense if maybe lydon's biopic was about to come out but they arent even done casting that one so nope. these constant comparisons to the clash need to fucking stop. the clash suck. there, i said it. Trust me, not letting people hear your opinion against something is a lot more damaging to the system then supplying it with money. I don't have to know fuck about a band members if I know they were trying to question british heirarchy by supplying a major corperation with money. Hell ya the clash and the ramones sold out, but fuck, their music had some listening quality. But Im sure captain 14 year old is right!

interesting letter considering that mr lydon has sold out more times than one can imagine but maybe he yearns for the early days of pil when he really did matter as a musical voice. what makes no sense is saying this so far after he did things like opening cheezy tours for INXS or doing bug programs for Discovery channel (good shows actually)...steve jones himself had already tarnished the pistols good name a year after john left by having ronny biggs sing tracks and good ole sid sang pretty fucking badly too. so i don't fucking care about this pisspoor excuse for them not showing up to get an award. johnny, your a fat old fart. take the award, give a meaningful speech and then tell them to shove it, but don't leave it like this, at least get some tv time.

Well,I guess responded to the post 4´th up from here which contains the sentence "here's the difference between the sex pistols and EVERY, and i fucking mean EVERY, other so-called punk band that came after them in that era: the sex pistols never tried to be a punk band, they just tried to play what came naturally. everyone else, including the clash, was copying them." Well,Sex pistols weren´t that original though. Musically they got inspired by Johnny thunders and the heartbreakers and The stooges among others and imagewise by Richard Hell and New york dolls. I guess my prior post was also an open letter to all who do really consider Sex pistols as the original and almighty punkrockgods and refuse to listen to any other punkbands after 1979. Or as the same poster 4´th up from here claims "what a fucking joke this site and every band on it is. punk died on january 14, 1978, it's about time everyone realized it." Yeah,ignorance is bliss when your mind have been closed for decades.
