Clear Channel launches New Music Network for unsigned artists

Partnering with GarageBand.com, media giant Clear Channel has launched New Music Network (NEW!). NEW! is a new initiative by the conglomerate to "provide a forum and a place for promising artists to be seen, heard and enjoyed." The service is free to unsigned bands and will result in airplay and coverage on the NEW! website.

Using the ratings on GarageBand the media company will be selecting 50 unsigned artists every month for inclusion in their radio playlists. The company owns over 1,200 radio stations, 30 television stations, numerous outdoor advertising companies and performance facilities through SFX entertainment.

The controversial company has had numerous criticisms levied at it, ranging from accusations of censorship and news misreporting to classic "payola" scandals involving radio airplay and accusations of monopolistic practices.

don't know if everyone knows about this or not but clear channel spun the concert promotions part off and no longer owns venues or anything. just fyi they are still fucking up radio for everyone so please go on hating

All Bill Graham Presents stuff is still linked to CC Live Nation (not sure if that's Clear Channel or not). Additionally the BGP website mentions being sold to clear Channel but does not metion if they were bought by another company. -Dante

bg is part of live nation, which is only tied to cc as long as it takes to switch over the web links. the e-mail has already changed over. the deal is that clear channel figured out that it was a lot harder to make money at concert promotions than they thought and so they decided to spin the company off into a publically traded company

i've worked for one of the "fake" names for about 8 years, since it was a real name before the massive buyouts started (first sfx, then clear channel) we aren't a part of it anymore. live nation is the big name now still a pretty shitty company but not a part of the radio empire anymore

During the 2004 Presidential Election, Clear Channel would independently run billboard and radio advertisements promoting President Bush, disclaiming the advertisement was paid for by them and had no direct affiliation with the Republican party. Then, in December of 2004, Clear Channel signed a deal with Fox News; Fox would become the primary distributor of news on all of Clear Channel’s participating stations. While Fox News doesn’t associate itself directly with the Republican part or a conservative agenda, it is commonly known that the news is often slanted or biased in favor of the President and his administration. Even Ted Turner has been quoted as calling the organization a “propaganda machine” for the Bush administration. Next time you’re driving around, maybe it’s wise to question exactly what you’re hearing – and worse – who wants you to hear it most.

Murdoch owns something like a third of all forms of media circulated in America. Plus he bought Myspace so now he owns the advertising rights, and personal information of the billion people that use Myspace. Anyways, get Outfoxed. i wrote this in late 2004, and hadn't seen outfoxed. but yeahy murdoch is a scary motherfucker. this particular part was more about advertising, and i would have gone into myspace had the sale been made. but it's a fairly old piece of writing. mainly i just wanted to get across clear channel and bush are in bed behind some closed doors, and if you check the people bush has given the fcc command chair too, they're letting cc deregulate into all forms of media. it's scary what the right wing could potentially dominate with such an ally.

While Bush has many, many ethically questionable ties to large corporations, being buddies with major media companies is not exclusive to Republicans. Clinton (along with overwhelming bipartisan congressional support) the Federal Communications Act of 199x that provided for huge deregulation, as well as giving away the publicly owned digital spectrum to broadcasters.
