Partnering with GarageBand.com, media giant Clear Channel has launched New Music Network (NEW!). NEW! is a new initiative by the conglomerate to "provide a forum and a place for promising artists to be seen, heard and enjoyed." The service is free to unsigned bands and will result in airplay and coverage on the NEW! website.
Using the ratings on GarageBand the media company will be selecting 50 unsigned artists every month for inclusion in their radio playlists. The company owns over 1,200 radio stations, 30 television stations, numerous outdoor advertising companies and performance facilities through SFX entertainment. The controversial company has had numerous criticisms levied at it, ranging from accusations of censorship and news misreporting to classic "payola" scandals involving radio airplay and accusations of monopolistic practices. So Garageband.com goes from Budweiser to Clear Channel. At least it's not bashful with having no credit or class. 2+ Replies

want to know something funny about clear channel? i was doing some research for a book i wrote and came across this, i'll just copy and paste it.
Clear Channel Entertainment is the largest radio conglomorate in the nation. It owns over 1,200 radio stations nationwide, giving it a 5% market share. For all the radio stations it doesn’t own, Clear Channel has been known to buy the advertising time those stations sell independently to promote whatever is on the airwaves of CCE stations.
With the Federal Communications Commission pushing for further de-regulation of the radio airwaves, Clear Channel could not only increase its monopoly, but extend its grasp into television as well. But why does this really matter? I guess it depends on who you vote for.
Clear Channel’s Vice President is Tom Hicks, the former chairman of the UTMICO, an investment branch of the University of Texas. Durin show rest of comment 8+ Replies

If you need a good and personal reason to hate Clear Channel, check out KSJO and Channel 104.9 in the South Bay. Lots of good people I knew got fired thanks to Clear Channel. Fuck that soulless bastard. -Dante

Wait, is clear channel the one who took the Dixie Chicks of the air because they were against the war? And if so, then are they just not going to allow political bands airtime or something? 1+ Reply

Man...I don't want to sound worn out or cliche, but seriously...FUCK CLEAR CHANNEL. I don't feel like that's some sort of automatic "punk response" they have a pretty dirty history. It seems like there would be some hidden agenda, or an attempt to gain street cred. god damn.

Everyone realizes that this will be just like MP3.com's ranking system where in 99 bands like The Juliana Theory and Get Up Kids were the top "unsigned" artists on there dominating Except this time around Hawthorne Heights will be on there because "it will save rock music if you vote for them!"

Boo. Five bucks says this is just a venue for Clear Channel to pre-promote the same acts that'd be signed and all over the radio in a few months' time, anyway.

How much you wanna bet that when it comes time to pay unsigned band royalties, they won't. Oh wait, what band that can barely afford a decent hotel will pursue them legally for not paying? Oh that's right, barely any. Therefore: Ka-ching for little expense. I hate Clear Channel.
