Fake Problems has real problems in Chicago

Fake Problems has joined a succession of bands affected by theft while on the road.

The Naples, FL-based band suffered the loss of a Dan Electro Remake by Jay Johnson bass. A flying "V" guitar, two Fender Stratocasters, a lap-steel/slide guitar, and a microKorg.

The band is continuing on their trip on the road with O Pioneers!!! when the incident occured. The band is documenting the trek with a hiptop journal.

What's wrong with that? Seriously, i don't get the hate.
I've donated quite a few times, and a bunch of times a band has uncancelled tour dates due to getting enough paypal donations to fix whatever problem they had.

If you don't want to give any money, that's ok too, but don't bitch about people for liking a band enough to give them some extra on the side because to solve an unexpected problem.

What's wrong? Its called being part of the fucking game, that's what's wrong.

If someone breaks into my apartment, I'm not gonna go to work and ask people to give me money. Now, they may take a collection to help out, which is fine.

I've done the research, and insurance isn't that expensive. Also, it cheapens everything when you ask for a handout. I mean its one thing to tell people what happened and say "hey, it would really help if you could stop by the merch table tonight buy some stuff".

You're a fucking band. If you're gonna tour, you gotta prepare yourself for the worst. Know that your van might break down, know that your shit might get stolen. But setting up an "internet collection plate" is a fucking joke.

Its paid off, so I don't have to carry comprehensive insurance, but you know what? I do because I want to be prepared.

That wasn't what you said, though. My point is that your example is completely irrelevant (I presume you don't park your car inside your apartment).

I agree with you that bands should get insured, but it's not always practical for whatever reason. My band is trying to figure out a week-long "tour" and we can barely afford the van, food, petrol and other costs before even taking account of insurance. When it comes to overnight stops we'll keep our stuff in whatever place we're staying in, or sleep in with it, since we can't afford it. It's easy to criticise from the virtual warmth of an internet messageboard, you know?

The thing about the internet is you don't know what people have been through, the experiences they've learned from and so forth. I'm not going to get into my own, my rest assured, I know what I'm talking about.

There's nothing wrong with getting a little help. But do it with tact. Setting a PayPal account is so fucking ridiculous. Ask for help at the shows, as a person, not as an electronic message. Its so impersonal and rude.

But what about fans worldwide who can't get close enough to donate physically? Plus the band aren't gonna be playing many shows with all their gear stolen.

It's not like there's any obligation to donate, and I'd rather a band I liked stuck up a paypal button rather than just split because they had no equipment.

If you're cared about, people will help you through. Fuck, if fans want to do a PayPal, fine.

But when the BAND themselves set one up and ask for money, fuck that.

It's different because a) nobody gives a shit if you make it to work or not, while bands have hundreds or thousands of fans who would really like to see the band able to continue what their doing. And b) asking your 10 or 20 coworkers for money to cover your lost car is silly. Asking thousands of anonymous people to chip in a few bucks if they want to is smart, and with a large number of very small donations that come from the kindness of people's hearts, it can make a huge difference.

I agree that bands SHOULD insure their gear. No argument there. But hell I know a band who got their gear insured, it was stolen, and then because of the circumstances the insurance company denied their claim. So not only were they out all their gear (and by all i mean ALL since the entire trailer was stolen), they were out all the money they wasted on insurance.

But, as the person originally stated, if you are a band that considers it "your job", shouldn't you have the same obligations to ensure your continued source of income?

Your scenario with insurance is very understandabe. A friend of mine's band, who tour frequently, and are pretty well-known had the same thing happen. They insured the vehicle, trailer and contents against theft, fire and collision.

The trailer gets stolen, so they file a claim. Trailer is later found in some shithole neighborhood with nothing in it but trash and it had spraypaint all of it. Claim gets rejected because they didn't have a "vandalism" clause. Total bullshit.

I'm in a touring band and i'm insured, so i know the deal.
But just recently a band i really wanted to see ran into problems, so i donated and got a few other to do that too, causing the tour to go on, and us being able to see a show that would've otherwise have got canceled.

No one's forcing you to do it, they do it for the fans who feel with the band and WANTS to help out.
