Media: Fucked Up dissing Billy Talent

Proving that Canadians are not all smiles and sunshine, recent Jade Tree signing and Toronto-based hardcore act Fucked Up have written a song attacking fellow Canucks, Billy Talent.

You can check out the song here: "The Line."

The troubles apparently started last year when a member of Billy Talent was waved into a cramped show at the Bovine Sex Club on Toronto's Queen Street while fans waited outside. Fucked Up guitarist 10,000 Marbles officially exiled members of Billy Talent from ever coming to their shows because, as he puts it, "They take up room from people who aren't slick douche-bag poseurs."

Regardless, if you like Fucked Up or Billy Talent, this is really despicable. Dissing a band in the media is one thing ... but writing a song about it? When did dissing the fans of one band become part of all this? The fact is, both of these bands need to deflate their egos a little bit and realize that the music and the fans matter more than anything, even if they only have fan. Also, there are 10,000 bands that sound like Billy Talent yes. .. but what about the 10,000 bands that sound like Fucked Up? Do they not count because Fucked up is Metal, or hardcore, punk or whatever label the kids have given them this week? Take care of you fueds with each other but keep it between yourselves.

I heard about this a while back and thought the whole thing was silly. So a guy from Billy Tallent likes your band and gets waved in (it didn't say he used his celebrity to get in so I'm assuming whoever ran the door just let him in without force), big deal. Good call on insulting someone in another band who happened to like your band.
I'm not saying I think Billy Talent are a good band or that Fucked Up has to like everyone who likes them but bashing someone because they got into your show is pretty stupid.

in a certain sense they aren't that bad but what they are being called out on isn't exactly unusual, as medium size celebs they don't exactly support the "scene" they came up through such as a band like Green Day has in the past (not comparing their celebrity exactly). So them being not exactly welcome isn't surprising, and then to seemingly flaunt that shit at a local show is a slap in the face.

Yeah, just because it's meant to be a joke doesn't make it funny. And even if it's a jab at Billy Talents song (which I guess was a shot at Fucked Up) it doesn't mean it's not meant as an insult (but merely at Billy Talents insult and not at Billy Talent).

writing an actual song aimed at the BT song would be straight up escalation of a dumb, pointless conflict over next-to-nothing.
instead, FU wrote a ridiuclous, over the top (calling their listeners "worse than nazis") track to point out the fact that BT's behavior is totally absurd. BT's insult makes perfect sense, it's just an asinine over-reaction. FU's response is certainly meant as an insult, but as satire, rather than some wah-wah name-calling.

Firstly, I'm not a Billy Talent fan at all, I think the singer has one of the most annoying and grating voices in punk.
But as for FU, for a band with so much apparent integrity in the "hardcore" scene, they apparently have no trouble riding the coat-tales of a much bigger band for some free publicity. Sure, it's not like they're trying to sway Billy Talent fans, ofcourse not, Billy Talent fans, for the most part, wouldn't even be interested in that kid of music. It's a fucking publicity stunt, and a lame one at that from an over-rated jock hardcore band.

ps. anyone who's seen Fucked Up would know, that the last thing the singer needs is more "Beef", much less a "Cheeseburger" or "Quarter Pounder".

It's a throwaway song, but completely hilarious and on point.

It's an over-the-top suckerpunch which is obviously not supposed to be taken literally. This is just the cleverest, most interesting and most EXCELLENT band in hardcore having a little bit of fun and adding another chapter to what has been -- and what will continue to be -- a very exciting story.

Well no fucking shit. Selling t-shirts that probably cost 6$ to make for 15$ is free publicity too. Imagine, having people PAY YOU to wear their name around wherever you go. I dont see this as being any different, and is probably unintentional. Its funny. its not even worth the fuss thats made out of it. Its just a song you can take and say " Hey buddy, listen to the funny intro to this track".

Billy Talent DID start it. The members of Fucked Up were pretty pissed about the butting in line thing, and chose, for once, to not go quietly about these kinds of rockstar ego trip happenings anymore. Billy Talent was the band to write a song and throw it on an album that is going to sell millions of more copies than Fucked Up's new one coming out is ever going to.
