"ok. at the risk of sounding like a complete ditz, this is pissing me off:"
Keep 'em coming, kids. Let all that aggression off of your chests and into your keyboards. about two weeks ago i went to the mall with two of my friends. i'm not usually a mall kinda person, but there was absolutely NOTHING else to do, it was a very dismal day outside. (k, i'm done defending myself) so we're at the mall, just walking around, none of us have money but we're looking anyhow. as a joke, we walk into delias, to check what the teenybopper crowd is going to be wearing this fall. every single article of clothing was "cute", "designer", mass-produced, "punk" clothing. there were racks of plaid flares. every single tee-shirt was either cut or unhemmed to give it that oh-so-attractive "pre-worn" look. the only jeans they had were machine ripped, and then machine safety pinned. half the tops were held together by nothing more than safety pins. the only thing missing from this disgusting display was jeans with bsb and brittney patches pinned on. the whole thing bothered me for a couple reasons. whatever "punk" is to you, i hope it's more than a fashion statement. one of the things about punk music is that it's different than the run of the mill crap they play on the radio. not that everything on the radio sucks, just that so much of it is the same. and punk is all about being different, the music, the bands, the overall lyric themes, even the "fashion" that goes with it...it's about setting yourself a little bit aside from all that is mainstream. well, maybe that's just what it is to me. anyhow, this whole punk is the next teen fad thing pisses me off, cuz it's just a bunch of 12 year old wanna be skanks saying, "i love "rock-show", tom's so hot!" so they go to the store and buy their jeans held together only by safety pins and walk around and tell themselves that now they're different, now they're really cool, cuz now they're punk. Rants! (64 comments)

Punk started out as an attitude against conformity. Punks that therfor say "all true punks have blue mohawks and only wear plaid" are in fact contradicting the beliefs punk was founded on. Some of you people are so sad... 1+ Reply

Just ignore it. This is the second time I've seen punk fashion enter the mainstream, and to be honest I felt the same the first time this happened (I beleive it was around 94'?). If you've been true to the music and the scene, then who cares. This will all blow over. 3+ Replies

Wouldn't the "punk" thing to do be to not care? Wouldn't the "punk" thing to do be to say, "Who gives a fuck? I'm more worried about the anti-racism action and trying to make a difference"? Wouldn't the "punk" thing to do be to let people do whatever makes them happy, even if it is following the trendy clothesline brands, instead of criticizing everything they do? No one cares about the trendy kids' actions. Or at least no one should. If you were "punk", you wouldn't question your idenity and get angry over some petty crap like this. I'm sure you all have more important "punk" things and causes to focus on instead of the new, hip trend. 4+ Replies

Well I guess it's time to be cool again. After all, if chicks dig plaid, they should dig me. After that, play some Anal Cunt, and watch their smiles turn upside down. 2+ Replies

Though I find confusion in your choice of music, I do believe you hit the nail on the head with the general sentiment expressed in your post. What a lot of 'kids' don't realize - or don't want to acknowledge for fear of 'peer-punk' alienation - is that living a non-conformist lifestyle does not necessarily mean contradicting everything relating to 'the establishment' (read: the norm). Instead, it has everything to do with what's inside of you, and a willingness to stick to your guns no matter what colour the shit on the fan might be. A person can spew forth the latest scene buzzword or espouse views commending the latest punk-oriented campaign (animal rights, Nike, McDonalds, Brian Deneke, Anti-Bush/Election, WTO, FTAA, Genoa, etc., etc.), but if you're just playing the role, it means shit-diddley.
Listen to what's inside and learn to lighten up a little. Trends are trends, and if yo show rest of comment 1+ Reply

Wasn't this the big debate when grunge got big and suddenly kids all over America were wearing Doc Martens, ripped jeans, and flannel? Everything that's cool at some point becomes mainstream for five minutes. If you wanna be different, try gender-fucking. Ex: If you're a guy, go to school in a dress. Big pink one too. I'm sure that won't be co-opted by fashion designers anytime soon... 3+ Replies

fuck clothing. To me, punk is all about what you think and mean, and not what clothes you're wearing. If you wear "punk" clothes just to be different, then you're a poser... 2+ Replies

who gives a shit? being punk isn't only about plaid and saftey pins anyways. all of those brainwashed little girls just want to fit in. we all know they look stupid and don't know what the fuck they claim to be representing. they care so much what people think they'll change in a heart beat. it'll pass over soon enough. so fuck those mindless bastards and move on. -shakes head- Oh man I totally understand what you are talking about, I work at hot topic and little preppy girls come in and buy things that...well God...you know, like for instance a girl comes in yesterday with tight shirt and tight pants, she had to be about 14, she was wearing you know, addidas or whatever, and she comes to the counter and asks me what the point of the store is. Her exact words were, "Don't you think it's a little pointless, the clothes you wear in here are just spreading rock music. It sucks." I told her that what you wear has ABSOLUTLY nothing to do with the music you listen to. I don't really know what the point of that story was but I thought it went with the title. But I agree, punk is definatly not a fasion statement. | Features
