Merge signs the Brokedown

Merge Records has signed The Brokedown. Described as heavily influenced by classic power pop and rock like The Kinks, Big Star, The Byrds and The Beatles, as well as more contemporary favorites such as Spoon, New Pornographers and Teenage Fanclub, the band will be releasing I Can't Go On.

The album was recorded with producer Raymond Richards and the record is due out January 23rd, 2007.

So, for those who have the new Falcon? how is it? on a scale from 1 to 10, 10 being Oh Calcutta!

I think I'd have to give it a few more spins before I can really say.

First listen, I like Oh! Calcutta! better. But they are very close. The harder sound was left to Oh! Calcutta!, The Falcon seems much more upbeat and positive (hell, there's even a little ska in there!).

Oh! Calcutta! is a "I'm drinking cheap whiskey with all my friends in my basement" record, and Unicornography is a "It's summer and I'm driving down the interstate with my windows down" record.

Yeah, when the first ska part came up, I was like "What the fuck...?". It isn't reeeeally ska, but you can definatley tell the influences here and there.

And yes, "Oh! Calcutta!" is my favorite album ever to drink to. I've never been able to see them live, but they are playing by me on 10/30, and I am fucking pumped. We'll see if the songs are as fun to sing along to drunk live.

I seen them live in Vegas a few weeks ago. fucking amazing, shitty crowed turn out but still fun as hell, and I wasn't even drunk. I talked to Brendan after and he sure was...or else he just always seems kind of out of it.

It's very good, but I like Oh! Calcutta! better.

However, it's nice to hear that the last two The Falcon and The Lawrence Arms aren't as similar as I thought they'd be. You can definitely tell them apart, which is nice.
