According to the Associated Press, a federal bankruptcy judge on Friday has
approved the sale of California-based Tower Records to Great American Group, which plans to liquidate the music
retailer.
After almost 30 hours of what attorneys described as "robust" and "vigorous" bidding, Great American won with a bid of $134.3 million, beating Trans World Entertainment, which had hoped to continue operating at least some Tower stores, by a single bid increment of $500,000. The deal includes the sale of various leases and properties. Attorney Peter Gurfein said Great American plans to begin the liquidation process and going out of business sales on Saturday, which eventually will result in the elimination of the jobs of some 3,000 Tower employees. Tim Pohl, an attorney representing Trans World, asked the judge whether $500,000 was "a material enough difference" to liquidate a company, as opposed to keeping thousands of people employed. Tower Records, which has 89 stores in 20 states and owes creditors about $200 million, filed for Chapter 11 reorganization in August. In its filing, the company said it has been hurt by an industrywide decline in music sales, downloading of online music and competition from big-box stores such as Wal-Mart. Besides the loss of so many jobs, Tower represents one of the largest buyers of independent music and magazines. The loss of the stores will likely have a noticeable effect on independent labels and bands. News (127 comments)

I've never been to Tower before, so I don't really have much to say. But, it is kind of scary when even one of the most well-known music chains can't stay afloat. Doesn't help the outlook for indie stores much. 2+ Replies

The Tower Records in Austin always had a really huge collection of punk/indie cd's & zines, as well as really obscure dvd's for cheap. BUT they went out of business about 3 years ago, as well as Sound Exchange (locally famous indie record store). If Tower can't stay in business in the Live Music Capital of the World, then it's no surprise that they are going outta business. 3+ Replies

There's a Tower records in schaumburg and it's got a decent selection but the prices were never reasonable... I wish I could get home from college sooner so I could reap the benefits of the going out of business sales. 3+ Replies

Tower Records was a horrible store. Their prices were way too high. $18 bucks for a CD is crazy. 5+ Replies

If Tower Records had filed for Chapter 11 twenty years ago, (and had played the way it did with indie labels), it would have been disasterous for the independent music industry, but today, while it will hurt them, independent music is a lot easier to get into and a lot of stores stock indie titles. So, it's not the worst possible time for this to happen. 3+ Replies

I used to go to Tower Records all of the time when I was younger and didn't really know of any indie stores. It has a lot nostolgic value, but I stoped being a frequent shoper once I found indie stores like Ameoba and Rasputins that were closer and cheaper. Still, I liked the chain and I am going to be sad to see it go, because outside of indie stores there are not many chains that carry the kind of depth Tower had. 1+ Reply

I still miss the Ann Arbor, Michigan Tower Records I used to go to almost every night while it was there. I have a ton of CDs in my collection that came from that particular store. This was the best chain record store ever to exist and I still would've went there if they hadn't closed it down. This is sad news even though I hadn't been in a Tower store in about 7 years due to none being anywhere near me anymore.

I wonder if my stealing from there for the past 20 years had anything to do with this. 2+ Replies

Eh, you selfish fuckers. I work part time at Tower, and it sucks because it was a fun job with some great people, and some of them have worked there for decades and they have to uproot their lives so suddenly. I think people have become so jaded by record prices that when cd's sell for $10 that's "too much fucking money." What the hell do you want? Be realistic. Tower had more variety and charm than any other corporate record store, and it sucks that it has to go. I know many local people and local artists that will be lamenting this. I fucking despise looking for jobs...... 5+ Replies

Let me tell you, as a guy in a band on a label, this bankruptcy steals a LOT of money from indie bands and labels. Such bullshit. Decline or not, why the fuck can't you pay anybody for the records you sold? Why can't you return the records you haven't sold? Fuck this. 1+ Reply

Kind of cool, in a way. 'Cause I used to buy all my zines from the the Tower around the corner. Now maybe I'll get my ass on the train and go to downtown Philly and buy 'em at an indie store.

whats the business benefit of buying a company for 134 million, inheriting 220 million in debt, and closing all of the stores? i mean are the stores themselves worth that much? 1+ Reply

I am very disappointed by the decision to liquidate a franchise that has been a Southern California landmark and treasure since the late '70's. Tower Records has been my favorite record store the past twenty years. Although this is a huge loss for all of us music fans that counted on Tower Records for the wide selection of music and movies and competitive prices, it is even a greater loss for the 3,000 employees nationwide that were the heart and soul of this franchise. | Features
