Gold Standard Labs has announced the latest project from prolific Mars Volta composer, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez. Coming on the heels of his latest release with the Mars Volta, Amputechture, Omar will collaborate with Damo Suzuki of the legendary band CAN to produce a limited vinyl-only 12-inch titled Please Heat This Eventually.
The EP will be released in early December and initially available through mailorder only. It will be properly released to stores in early 2007. The recording features musical contributions from the OR-L Quintet (Juan Alderete de la Pena, Marcel Rodriguez-Lopez, Money Mark Nishita and Adrian Terrazas Gonzales). Can was a musical group formed in West Germany in 1968, working within the scene that music critics dubbed "krautrock", with a style grounded in the garage rock of bands such as The Velvet Underground and world music. The band composed music largely through free improvisation and editing and had a significant influence on avant-garde, experimental, underground, ambient, and electronic music. You forgot to mention that Can were as grounded in jazz and 60's soul as they were garage rock.

The albums Damo Suzuki did with Can are definitely their best, but I wonder how much he had to do with the songwriting/production aspect of those albums. Hopefully the collaboration isn't just Omar running everything. | Features
