Killers singer offended by Green Day

The Killers' frontman Brandon Flowers has publically declared his outrage over recent fame and attention Green Day has received. Flowers contests that the track 'American Idiot' is being misconstrued by many abroad as anti-American, and the fact that Green Day filmed their DVD Bullet In A Bible, in the UK, only furthers to perpetuate the assumption.

You have Green Day and 'American Idiot'. Where do they film their DVD? In England. A bunch of kids screaming 'I don't want to be an American idiot' I saw it as a very negative thing towards Americans. It really lit a fire in me. I just thought it was really cheap. To go to a place like England or Germany and sing that song - those kids aren't taking it the same way that he meant it. And he [Billie Joe Armstrong] knew it.

Both bands suck, but both have freedom of speech. The problem hre is that the Killers dude seems to have that same narrowmindedness of most rightwingers where they feel that pointing out or even stating ANYTHING that can be constrewed as unamerican automatically makes you an enemy of the state and automatically ties you to Al Quaeda. The actions of any American president affect the entire world.

While other countries have fucked up governements, what makes you so certain that the people in those countries aren't doing something about it? ive travelled to over 17 countries and i believe america has the nicest people in the world. america is the most diverse country in the world. travel to other countries and you will notice how everyone hates each other there (example: germans and the turks, aussies and lebanese, all of western europe and the muslims). there is a lot more racial and religious tension over there than in america. dont judge the american citizens by the actions of their government. the governments of european, and other western countries, are just as bad as the US.

Born in the USA is not really about Vietnam, nor is it an anti-Vietnam War song in the strictest sense, though it was originally going to be called "Vietnam."

It is about a lonely vet who has come back to the United States after serving in Vietnam and is now trying to make sense of things and get back to having a real life and going to work, etc., but he's traumatized personally, and somewhat vilified by the public who now sees the war in a very negative light, and he isn't sure what to do with himself after having put himself in this position for a country that now seems to ignore him, as the nation tries to move on and forget about the war and therefore him.

American Idiot is not that nuanced. And Flowers has something of a point, just in that the DVD could have focused on an American show and what they were trying to do with the record. And

Which is my favorite LTJ songs, but it still doesn't make them one of the more politically minded ska bands, when that interview took place there was AAA, falling sickness, kemuri,Suicide Machines and other, with the exception of AAA none of those bands were overtly political (suicde machines didn't really become a politcal band until 'a match and some gasoline') but their lyrics were still more politically motivated than LTJs!

This guy has a totally valid point. I imagine it's very easy for a foreigner to miscontrue this song as being about Americans in general, rather than a very spefic type of American. Assuming your average teenaged foreign GD fan is as dumb as your average American GD fan, I can definitely see how the song's meaning can go from "Don't want to be an American who isn't intelligent" to "Don't want to be one of those Americans, because they're dumb."

The only true disappointment on that album, the rest of it is pure brilliance. The late-era Beach Boys influence of "Pancreas" is so wonderful to listen to.

The album is about one kid who could be any kid in America and his journey from suburbia to realizing his government is fucked, moving out and getting a punk rock new name and persona, getting into drugs, finding a girl, losing the girl and realizing he's gotta grow up and goes back to suburbia prodigal son style.

That's why this album is called American Idiot. The songs can appear to be introspective or politically sound on thier own at times, but when you view it as a whole it's in my opinion a blatantly coherent story of punk rocker/rebellious youth # 949838403803.

Oh yeah, and the Killers suck ass.

Has anybody else noticed that Green Day's recent popularity has been somewhat or mostly attributed to eyeliner and being political all of a sudden? I guess blue hair, skate clothes, and songs about tripping and masturbating don't sell like they used to when Clinton was president.

American Idiot is barely a protest record. It doesn't go nearly far enough nor is it as explicit as it could be. Brandon Flowers is a tool, though, and should acquaint himself with our Constitution (the single greatest document in all of human history IMHO). Not enough Americans do this, including this administration and a good portion of Congress.

From what I've read from album reviews of the Killers new album, that douche is just trying to be the next Bruce Springteen... hell he even named dropped Bruce's "Born In The USA" in the article.

Just throw him in the pile of idiots who complain about things that don't even matter and are nothing but trivial details spare for the one moron who makes this big stink over it and looks into things way more than he needs too.

"My band dont sell as many records. I talked shit in public on one of the largest selling albums of the past few years, therefore a large fanbase will read my critical remarks. They even made posts about ti on punknews.org that people who would have never otherwise looked at a thread about the Killers, are now aware that i have a new album coming out. GD shouldn't care. Killers are tryin'. They both have great roots. I personally prefer the old school punk bands, who care less about air play anyway Billie-Boy. Killers are almost as sincere as Green Day. Still a lot more combo-rip off/borrowed hitch hook, top hits, but smartly original in the end. Yet another band, Platinum Blonde, a new wave, 80s band from Toronto, had hits that sound like Somebody Told Me, anyone see that similarity too? Killers & GD are both easy on the ears; they do make us feel. Face it, radio = commercial. You know who you are... you'll sing along to ABBAs MamaMia retro too in the shower you posers. Catchy music is just that catchy and
