You have Green Day and 'American Idiot'. Where do they film their DVD? In England. A bunch of kids screaming 'I don't want to be an American idiot' I saw it as a very negative thing towards Americans. It really lit a fire in me. I just thought it was really cheap. To go to a place like England or Germany and sing that song - those kids aren't taking it the same way that he meant it. And he [Billie Joe Armstrong] knew it.You can read the full story over at NME.

The Killers' frontman Brandon Flowers has publically declared his outrage over recent fame and attention Green Day has received. Flowers contests that the track 'American Idiot' is being misconstrued by many abroad as anti-American, and the fact that Green Day filmed their DVD Bullet In A Bible, in the UK, only furthers to perpetuate the assumption.

hilarious that a band that blatantly rips off DEPECHE MODE, DURAN DURAN and GANG OF FOUR can be so staunchly anti-foreigner. 4+ Replies

Wow. Just wow. Brandon, as Londoners would say: "You're an idiot; play a record."

The only way you can be offended by that is if you ARE the American Idiot in question.
Someone (October 13, 2006)
Both bands suck, but both have freedom of speech. The problem hre is that the Killers dude seems to have that same narrowmindedness of most rightwingers where they feel that pointing out or even stating ANYTHING that can be constrewed as unamerican automatically makes you an enemy of the state and automatically ties you to Al Quaeda. He's entitled to his opinion, but it really is quite narrowminded. 2+ Replies

the killers suck, but this dude has a point. i've travelled a lot overseas and people definitely take this song the wrong way (in thier defense, its a song and they can take it however they want). the problem today is that it is "cool" to hate america. the majority of the people who are againt our policies have no idea what our policies are even about (and im not a republican, and i disagree with about 99% of the policies of the current administration). these same people are just as brainwashed as anyone in the US, they simply follow the path of their current government and don't know how to think for themselves. do you think the germans or the french really care about the citizens of iraq? do you think they lose any sleep at night over what is happening in iraq? NO! those people are simply following the path laid out for them by their own government and other people in t show rest of comment 13+ Replies

It breaks my heart to say it, but The Killers recorded output is better than American Idiot. Not that The Killers are very good, but American Idiot was so fucking lame. 50 minutes of brain dead sloganeering, and the worst music video of all time (Wake Me Up When September Ends). And I'm a democrat. The Killers are probably more "punk" than modern day Green Day too. 10+ Replies

Hey "Mr. Brightside", I wish you'd "break your back to know my name" so you'd be paralyzed and unable to make stupid comments or shitty music. Couldn't "I got soul but I'm not a soldier" be construed as hurting troop morale? I hope the Killers get Killed. Maybe when you have 1/100th of the impact or longevity that Green Day has had, you'll have room to talk. In the meantime, you're just a shitty top 40 faux-indie rock band from the dirtiest city in the world. 3+ Replies

It hasnt explicitly been said here yet, but I think its obvious to all of us that he's just attempting to make press for his new record. didnt this green day dvd come out... months ago? And just as the new killers record (which is so bad even the hipster-suck-off-festival that is Rolling Stone pannned it) comes out, he decides this is the time to make a statement? And then he had the audacity to MENTION his NEW RECORD in the article as if it wasnt obvious to everyone that he's jockeying for publicity. "Believes Sam's Town is a better representation of America?" For shame, Brandon Flowers. For shame. 2+ Replies

EyesLikeBombs (October 13, 2006)
This guy has a totally valid point. I imagine it's very easy for a foreigner to miscontrue this song as being about Americans in general, rather than a very spefic type of American. Assuming your average teenaged foreign GD fan is as dumb as your average American GD fan, I can definitely see how the song's meaning can go from "Don't want to be an American who isn't intelligent" to "Don't want to be one of those Americans, because they're dumb." 5+ Replies

The album is about one kid who could be any kid in America and his journey from suburbia to realizing his government is fucked, moving out and getting a punk rock new name and persona, getting into drugs, finding a girl, losing the girl and realizing he's gotta grow up and goes back to suburbia prodigal son style. 1+ Reply

American Idiot is barely a protest record. It doesn't go nearly far enough nor is it as explicit as it could be. Brandon Flowers is a tool, though, and should acquaint himself with our Constitution (the single greatest document in all of human history IMHO). Not enough Americans do this, including this administration and a good portion of Congress.

let me paraphrase him "My band dont sell as many records. I talked shit in public on one of the largest selling albums of the past few years, therefore a large fanbase will read my critical remarks. They even made posts about ti on punknews.org that people who would have never otherwise looked at a thread about the Killers, are now aware that i have a new album coming out. There is no such thing as bad publicity. I even closed out the interview with "My bands new album is a better representation of America than American Idiot." By saying that, i subconciously envoked all fans of Green Day to give my bands new album the pepsi challenge by proclaiming it a better version of Green Days ideas. Hence my My Space and Purevolume plays wil be through the roof, and this was better more contrversal advertising than a full page ad in Rolling Stone. I know how to show rest of comment 1+ Reply

Publicity: The art of combining new wave hit hooks from the 80s; that'll getcha airplay. Take a page out of the Madonna handbook. GD has the art of combining punk hooks well. Art imitates life. GD shouldn't care. Killers are tryin'. They both have great roots. I personally prefer the old school punk bands, who care less about air play anyway Billie-Boy. Killers are almost as sincere as Green Day. Still a lot more combo-rip off/borrowed hitch hook, top hits, but smartly original in the end. Killers sound like yet another 80s band from Toronto, Platinum Blonde, who had hits that sound like Somebody Told Me ie It Doesn't Really Matter, anyone see that similarity too? Killers & GD are both easy on the ears; they do make us feel. Face it, radio = commercial. You know who you are... you'll sing along to ABBAs MamaMia retro too in the shower you posers. Catchy music is just that catch
