Oasis claims Green Day stole "Wonderwall"

Oasis' star Noel Gallagher has accused punk trio Green Day of "ripping off" his song "Wonderwall" for their hit "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams." It seems that Gallagher is unaware that the entirety of American Idiot was composed by an Oregon grocery store clerk in 1992. (Since "Wonderwall" was released in 1995, that means Oasis also ripped off the grocery store clerk as did Dillinger Four.)

In all seriousness however, Gallagher adds:

If you listen, you'll find it is exactly the same arrangement as Wonderwall. They should have the decency to wait until I am dead (before stealing my songs). I, at least, pay the people I steal from that courtesy.

They consider themselves to be - and I quote - 'a kick-ass rock 'n' roll band'. They could not be less kick-ass if they tried.

Though Green Day's album has won every single music award at least twice, the album has managed to offend more than a few, including Killers frontman Brandon Flowers as well as this guy.

ok look.... i actually engineer for this band... when on the torrents in my spare time i noticed this post, since you dont have to sign in or register i figured i would drop a line.

there are many many many different types of music. in rock music , or what the general public views AS rock music, there are just so many possibilities of chords and chord progressions you have to work with, unless you have invented some magical instrument that sounds and plays nuthing like a guitar, occasionally, songs from different artists are going to sound the same.

no dude, its fucking exactly the same the whole time. i noticed it the first day i listened to that green day cd. i was like "what the fuck?!??!" .. not only was it a really famous song, but oasis is really from basically the same music generation as green day. if it wasn't purposeful, its a pretty big fucking coincidence. its not just the chords and the order, but the fucking rhythm. its the whole arrangement. thats more than just the chords.

you don't know how music works do you? its EXACTLY the same chord progression. do you know what a chord progression is!??!?!?!?! seriously. the vocal meter is definitely different, but the melody is EXTREMELY similar. its obvious that your comprehension of how music is constructed (as well as terminology; here's a hint, you can have the same chord progression in different keys, asshole.). the funniest part about your post is that this has been known for quite some time. i noticed it when the cd first came out and i've heard a lot of people talking about it on forums and etc. whether its an accident or not is debatable but it IS the same song (other than the lyrics and guitar effects)

yeah, but they don't fit this well. the chord progression is exactly the same, the rhythm is exactly the same, and the tempo is exactly the same. most mashups that are good are good because they bring two things that are kind of different together and make them work. these songs don't need to be changed at all to make them work.

Seriously, If I wrote songs that sounded like Oasis songs, I would not compare my songs with "Boulevard." I wouldn't compare them to "Every Rose has it's Thorn" either. I would let them stand on thier own instead of opening that door.

That said, if I had the backtalk in me that the Gallagher brothers have, I would open every floodgate I could and let the whole world criticize. Then I would open up a can of whupass not seen since "First Blood"

I don't think that they did knowingly steal the songs. He had definitely heard all of those songs though, so I think he accidentally ripped them off. However, they are so similar as to be ridiculous. There should be someone that checks that kind of thing.

I think the D4 ripoff is the worst of the bunch. It has a pretty unique sound and is instantly recognizable. ALSO, D4 toured with Green Day. I wonder if Billie Joe feels bad for ripping off one of his friend's songs and using it to win a Grammy.

"Wonderwall"'s best virtue are the strings, whereas the strongest and most recognisable aspect of Boulevard is probably the different electric guitar sounds, each of which are mutually exclusive to their respective songs.

They may have similarities, but it's a pretty big stretch to say it's a rip-off.

whatever. all art really rips off what came before it. even what we consider to be really original, is just ripping some aspect off from someone else and putting their own spin on the idea. it's just how well you can rip someone off. new ideas come from refining old ones. when that happens, sometimes you get different results. just look at your favorite movie and tell me there's nothing taken from something else. Anyone see Grandma's Boy? It was very surprisingly hilarious. It also took just about every joke from another movie, but it was the delivery of each joke that made it so funny. Hmm. That makes sense, to a degree. If you think about painting, painters have been reinterpreting past painters for hundreds of years. Raphael stole some things from Michelangelo even while he was working in the Vatican, kind of as a jab at him. And people have been reusing poses and groupings of people for centuries. Picasso would even make the exact same painting dozens of times, but each one would still be different.

I think this is not quite as acceptable in the music community, however. Picasse stole ideas and themes from other painters, but he was also inventing a completely new genre at the time. A lot of time when painters stole things from other painters, they put them in a completely different context. It's not like Oasis couldn't have written the Green Day song 10 years ago, though. If Green Day did it on purpose, which I assume they didn't,

The structure is close.. but I'm sure I can go back to the 60's and find the same damn chord structure in a James Taylor song because it'n extremely common progression. Extremely differnt feels and atmopsheres to the song... messages...

I defintely think it would've been best for Noel to just keep his mouth shut, but he does have a point.....and other people seem to back it up according to previous posts. In response to the whole Beatles thing....it's a good argument, but I wouldn't say Oasis BLANTANTLY ripped off the Beatles.....there are obviously a huge number of similarities in their music, but I don't listen to a certain Oasis song and think of particular Beatles song - their music in general is similar. With Boulevard, I immedately think of Wonderwall. That being said, I still don't think Noel should be complaining really or what the big deal is. I guess the new cool thing is to dislike Greenday.......and while I've always enjoyed their music, people have a right to dislike them - they seem pretty full of shit to me.

! I know that wasn't exactly serious, but I think people are confused. Oasis sounds like a more recent Beatles, correct. However, they never wrote a song that sounded extremely similar to a specific Beatles song. You might say that their style or vocal harmonies or whatever remind you of the beatles in general, but that does not merit royalties. If that were the case pretty much every punk bad out today would be paying royalties to someone. You DO have to pay royalties, however, if you cover a copyrighted song. Like, I'm sure Weird Al had to either pay royalties or get permission from the people whose songs he covered, even though he changed the words. That is basically the issue with Green Day. The question is whether or not it is actually a cover of Wonderwall.

This song uses some pretty standard major chords, in a pretty standard progeression, the vocals and lead guitar stuff is very different from wonderwall. well, if you ask me, green day were good back in the day and all but the joke was always that every song sounded the same...which was kinda fine if you like bands that do that sort of thing (ramones, etc.)

so anyway, maybe they just got sick of writing the same song over and over and wanted to "branch out" a little bit, but due to the fact that they were so stuck in the "formula" they had, they werent able to write anything else that sounded any different without ripping someone else off.

sometimes musicians get stuck in a rut playing the same chords and scales over and over, and they never take the time to learn more versatile stuff in different genres, etc. and then when they go to write in a different style they havent played that style enough to create their own unique spin on it.

Is that what happens when your on top? Your head gets so far up your ass that you think everything you do or write is made of gold? The Beatles never complained about anything like that (eventhough everyone especially Oasis wants to be them), in fact Oasis is a rip-off of a lot of bands, Fuck you Noel!! I'm never buying your records again. Green Day deserves every bit of credit because they were able to pull things off perfectly without bragging after.. -Tim

Reasons to laugh at Oasis:

1) They claim to pay the people they rip off--even though the Rolling Stones had to sue them to get a dime.

2) They accuse System of a Down of being all about image and looking like crackheads--even though they are a Beatles cover band with a mid-nineties alternative image.

I don't know why everyone calls them a Beatles covers band. None of their songs song like The Beatles too much and they've only covered about two of their songs.

They did credit the Rolling Stones as well as everyone else they stole from! This song just doesn't have credit. Travis also ripped off Wonderwall's chord progression. Noel didn't complain about Travis. I think it's an American/England thing.

System of a down really aren't very good or controversial in the slightest.

sounds like Noel Gallagher trying to bring attention to Oasis since no one cares about them anymore.

The first time I heard Boulevard, it definitely reminded me of another song, but not Wonderwall. To be honest, the entire American Idiot CD reminds of songs/melodies I've heard before.

I like American Idiot quite a bit, but in reality, its the first Green Day CD with musical credibility. When they follow it up with something equally as good, then I'll be impressed. Til then, I guess we are stuck watching them drive it into the ground. Maybe they can do another special on Fuse...that's not getting old at all (slight sarcasm)

Green Day isn't creating any new genres of music. They blend punk sensibilities with pop and "alternative rock" elements. They borrow quite a bit from what's come before, so at some point they're going to sound similar to other tracks.

The last band in the world that should be criticizing them for that is Oasis, who put themselves on the map by trying to emulate the Beatles. And then once they had that attention, they just recycled their OWN songs.

I don't understand why Oasis left it so long since American Idiot's release to start crying over it.

As far as i'm concerned, Wonderwall is a good song, Boulevard of Broken Dreams is a good song, and the American Edit mix is also a good song.

I don't care who's ripping who off. I don't care if Green Day ripped off Micky Mouse. I don't care if Oasis ripped off the fucking andrex puppies.

It's all very childish, Oasis should just calm down, they'll pick a fight with anyone, and in the 90's it was cool, but now it's just....... pathetic. It's like when your parents say "Groovy!". It's just old, and uncool. And quite embarrassing to us Brits to have someone like Noel Gallagher representing us.
