Alkaline Trio post Smoking Popes cover from New Year's Eve 7-inch

Alkaline Trio have posted one of the tracks from their New Year's Eve 7-inch released to attendees of their show on December 31st. The band shared the bill with fellow Chicagoans, Smoking Popes and appropriately enough, the track is a cover of that band's track, "Off My Mind."

The track comes from the Popes 1993 indie full length, Get Fired.

You can check it out or download it from the Trio's myspace page.

The band has promised that the Popes will be posting their contribution to the 7-inch soon.

Back a few years ago (right when Infirmary came out, I believe) when Alk3 were still playing small clubs like the Troubadour, their show was damn good and energetic. But I saw them at the Wiltern with Reggie and the Full Effect, they were boring as all hell, no moving around, no banter, no nothing.

Anyone remember when Goddamnit camn out and they were playing the greatest shows ever? I mean, even if they were sloppy, you knew they would only play great songs because they had yet to write any bad ones. The last couple albums are sad.

They're pretty hit or miss, but the last two times I've seen them they've been very good. They don't have the energy they used to (they are getting older), but they put on a good show. I think it really depends on the set list - it seems so random sometimes. So if the set is good, the show will most likely be good, and vice versa.

If you guys knew how to spend your money wisely, you would've seen Local H instead. Still one of the most underrated bands going today.

The Smoking Popes are good, but not at the price they were charging to watch them and a washed up Alkaline Trio.

Their live shows are fantastic and they continue to release quality albums. And they don't constantly write about ghosts and goblins.

As for Alkaline Trio, they haven't released a decent album since 2000 and have continued to regress. Not to mention, in the world of "mainstream", Alkaline Trio has never had a hit single like Local H did. In your view, they may be "one hit wonders" but at least they're not a pathetic shell of their former self.

And we won't even bother to discuss them rapidly morphing into a My Chemical Romance side project in both looks and music.

Now, let's look at your next statement: even at their prime, Local H weren't playing venues, nationwide, as big as Alkaline Trio has been playing for the past 4-5 years. Even Local H's "big record" didn't go gold. I'd bet you thousands of dollars Alkaline Trio have sold FAR more records than Local H. Local H's "hit" may find itself on some "songs of the 90s" comps. They're like the Catchagoogoo of the 90s. Congrats. I guess we could "debate" what Trio records are good but Infirmary, to Good Mourning to Crimson have sold tons of copies, have gotten them radio and mtv play, have developed a larger and larger following, and drawn more and more people etc. Should I continue? I personally think them pre-Infirmary is a "good band that hasn't become great."
To be honest, Local H are NO WHERE IN THE FUCKING LEAGUE of Alkaline Trio as far as "big bands" go.

The only Trio CD I really enjoy is Goddamnit, but I was impressed enough with their cover of one of my favorite Popes songs that I'll be checking out one of their other albums.

I'm excited about the Popes' contribution, but I'm not holding my breath because their web presence sucks. They haven't updated their "official" site--which features frames and an EZBoard--since July 31, and their MySpace is pretty sporadically changed, too.

Wow, that totally sounds like me. Except, you know, I didn't say anything like that, and I'm not 12. And really, are Alkaline Trio fans in any position to joke about young fans? Half of them couldn't get into the show because it was 18+. The other half had an Algebra final to study for.

I stand corrected, then: they always looked retarded, but they used to be good enough not to sound like it. Apparently wearing eyeshadow on a day-to-day basis causes eventual brain damage, which--as we all know--leads to an overdose of asinine gothic imagery.

In response to the Local H/ Alkaline Trio Argument, You're both wrong and both right. I'm a fan of both bands and Alkaline Trio's live shows are almost always a disapointment. Local H may not have the same success they did in the 90s but anyone who has paid attention to them know they still have been writing and putting out great quailty rock and roll records for years.

They also still sell out shows every time they play in the Chicagoland area. Rather than attempt to go all out and sign to a big record deal Local H chooses to basically do everything by themselves and play music on their time and how they want to do it. They have been able to do it for years and have the success they want, so I say good for them.

Alkaline Trio still plays somewhat smaller venues and although they are considered a "big band" in the punknews.org community most people still have never heard of them. And while it's not totally true that they write about goblins it is somewhat true that in the past few records it has gone to the darker lyrical side which I'm fine with.

The band can't keep writing about their girlfriends and being heartbroken when they are married and coming up on 30 years old.

I have respect for both bands because they both seem to do what they want and have never been affected by the current fad of music. Local H likes to play rock n roll so they do, Alkaline Trio wanted to move forward lyricaly so they did. Kudos to both bands.

On a personal note I prefer Alkaline Trio's records but for a live show I would take Local H any day. They put everything they have into their sets and it still amazes me they can get that kind of sound out of just two people.

I think we can all agree that for the most part My Chemical Romance Blows.

They put out their own records because no one else will. They sell out shows in Chicago, while drawing 100 or so everywhere else.
Alkaline Trioe play in 1000-3000 capacity clubs, everywhere.
Local H NEVER put out good records; they turned out 1 catchy song, and the rest a blitzkrieg of terrible "grunge" tunes.

100 or so? That's giving them too much credit. I've done shows in Lawrence, Kansas City and the KC one was 13 people, Lawrence maybe 60. Not so hot.

1000-3000? All the times I've seen Alkaline Trio, it's been sold out, but in a smaller venue - maybe 400-500 people, not even....unless you're talking about festivals or warped tour. Still, I don't think they play 1000-3000 capacity venues everywhere they go. At least I haven't seen them play one.

I don't know what they do anywhere else, but they sold out a 2,000 capacity venue in Cleveland, which is no small feat. Granted, that was when they toured with Against Me, but it was still nowhere near packed in there until the Trio's set.

I've seen them sell out Bowery and Irving in NYC, which are just under 1000. They've sold out Avalon in Boston on multiple occassion (2000), done well over 1000 in other spots in New England, headlining.

I was being generous saying 100 for Local H. I don't think they draw more than 50 outside of Chicago.

Irving has almost 1000 person capacity? Wow. I thought it'd be more like 700 tops. Then again, I would have no way of knowing really for sure besides just being there for shows. I guess a place can always fit more people than you think. Either way, they're a fairly popular band and I still enjoy them. I don't know why people think they should "die" or "give up."
