Tours: The Hold Steady / The Thermals

Brooklyn's The Hold Steady are headed to Europe in February to play a number of shows in a number of countries. They'll return to the States in time for an appearance at the Langerado Music Festival in Sunrise, FL, an event that features everyone from Michael Franti & Spearhead to Toots & the Maytals to the New Pornographers. They'll follow that event with a short tour alongside SubPop punks the Thermals.

Both acts are supporting critically acclaimed new full lengths, those being Boys and Girls in America and The Body, The Blood, The Machine respectively.

He was a good MC, but he was just a carbon copy of early slim shady era Eminem. And he had a shit attitude to match. Misfit was terrible, and I didn't really think she was hot either.

Boys and girls is one of the best cds to come out last year.
If I want singing I'd watch that Idol show. Those people are singers.
The bands you listen to and show up on this website barely stay in key, if at all

My first thought when I heard this band maybe a year ago was, "Wow, this guy is apparently heavily infulenced by those William Shatner albums."

Although, I have to admit that I like those Shatner albums and I like The Hold Steady.

I'm finally listening to Boys and Girls in America.

WHAT OVERRATED SHIT. Are you kidding me? This is the album every music publication collectively shat the floor over last year? These lyrics are terrible. Namedropping Kerouac and Guns n' Roses doesn't save you from writing insincere crap.

The dude tells stories and paints a picture. Although I don't totally dig the music, the lyrics here and for Lifter Puller were sweet. I'd be interested to hear your idea of great lyrics - I'm guessing you think Blake sucks as well in which case this convo is done

This man does a great job of telling stories. This cd is a narrative about boys and girls in America. What is unique about Craig's lyrical style is that he puts you into the story. Its always very first person based. So since you say that people over 17 shouldn't even listen to this, I guess you would agree with me?

giving one or two lines of a Hold Steady song is hardly a good example of the lyricism to be found within. finn is a great lyricist, and this band is the best rock band to come out in recent times.

Out of the context of the song, I think all lyrics look dumb.

I'm not big on this band, but he's definitely an above average lyricist.

Alright, some of those lines are downright stupid, but those is no way paint the picture of Craigg FInn's lyrical ability. Fuck the Hold Steady's music until further notice (I'm not a fan), but some of his lyrics are unfuckwithable:

Dude, you have lucero as one of your top rated bands. they sing just as much about drinking with as much "frat boy" gimmick.

1. Most of Lucero's songs aren't about doing drugs.
2. The songs about girls are more about love than hooking up in at a drug party or in a chill out tent.
3. Ben Nichols might not have the best voice either, but its better than this douche.
4. The "what have you done better?" argument is a true sign of your defeat.

2. Instead it is falling in love with a 16 year old, or meeting a girl in a bar and drunkenly falling in love with her
3. They are practically the same voice. Ben can disguise his because it is southern. Have you seen them live. There isnt much singing from Ben. They rock live though.
4. Continue with your masturbation. Just remember, Lucero is considered a southern version of the Hold Steady by a lot of people.

do you know anything about songwriting or beat poetry? you quoted lines out of context. the lyrics to boys and girls are definetly not as obscure as the older material yet no less great because of the overall message. craigs ability to ryhme and weave these tales is uncanny and way above your average artist. maybe your sick of all the critical attention but just look at the other respect he gets in other scenes. im pretty sure ryhmsayers and various twin city rappers have asked craig to appear on their tracks. the guy is a good writer, and not a kerouac ass kisser.

That's BS that they're 'Brooklyn-based' if they write all their damn songs about Minneapolis. I know that's where they claim to be from, but still.

Fun fact: One of the candidate names for Minneapolis when it was foundered was Brooklyn, hence suburbs like Brooklyn Park and Brooklyn Center.
