They're not making fans pay for autographs, dumbass. They're getting fans, many of whom have plenty of extra cash OR items lying around, to donate blankets and coats to shelters in exchange for autographs. This isn't being done for fans, it's being done for people in need, so playing free shows is a stupid, pointless idea.

I don't even like Anti-Flag, but I appreciate this gesture to use their 'celebrity' for a good cause and not personal gain.

interestingly, we end up putting the blame on "sell-out" bands who are actually helping folks out, instead of directing the blame back to where it ought to be-- the fucking people running a system that can't keep its own kids warm at night.

Blankets cost more than posters. You have to analyze the opportunity cost. With X amount of money, you can either invest in all in the homeless, or cheap posters, which in turn will generate a greater amount of blankets for the cause.

Yeah I agree, but anytime someone does something good, people can say that person could've done something more. So yeah, Anti-Flag could do more to help people here, but at least they're doing something to start.

Well said, but Anti-Flag is gonna get shit for whatever they do - musically or not musically - even if what they're doing is helping people out. Personally, I think it's a good/nice idea, and something low-key.

i think you need to take a look at what Anti-Flag are doing here and then decide what's more important

now someone can reply to this and post and talk about how you can keep your 'punk ideals' and help people at the same time....but the fact of the matter is Anti-Flag is doing something to help others and i respect that

Obviously, helping people out wins, no argument there. I'm just saying that Anti-Flag used to be a band you could get behind. It was great.

It's awesome that they're helping people out, but when you see 'Anti-Flag to hold Autograph sessions...', you don't think "Sweet, blanket/coat drive, nice one!"
It's more of a "Autograph sessions, what the fuck is this!?!"

a) No good cause can seriously be labeled a "joke". What have you done?
b) Meeting fans and offering to give autographs is inciting more people to take part and help people, for once. Clearly, you're above all of the rest of us scum to consider this whole consideration for other human beings bullshit.
c) Holding this event at a well known public locale such as West 49 allows easier access to a greater number of people.
d) Bitching about other people's efforts on an internet website is really going to help a lot of people. Thanks a bunch.

In Rise Against's defense they do other small things to help people out......I think their signing to a major was sincerely to try to reach more people, instead of making more money. A few years ago they played a 5 dollar show in Rochester - it was pretty sweet. I know it's not helping out people who really need it like those in poverty, but it was nice for their fans to pay 5 bucks to see a good show.

let me make a wild guess here and say, an Anti-Flag fan?

Blow a goat. This band has done more than almost any other "political" band. Normal "political" bands play free shows at their local free space to raise what ends up being 45 bucks for a local cause. Anti-Flag is helping push legislation through Congress. They helped get a religiously held prisoner free. I wasn't a fan before this new album, but they have put their money where their mouths are.

Dude, the band cares. Stop complaining. Yeah, so they're using West 49 to meet their fans. So what? It opens the doors for a larger audience to come and contribute. And besides, I think their fan base is large enough that any influence visits to West 49 might have would be minimal, if at all.

See, you people are what's wrong with the world. You reserve the right to complain aobut everything without giving credit because you're too insecure about your own life has a human being. It would be pretty easy for me to say that you're just being an environmentalist because you want a fancy title to put you above your peers and make yourself sound important.

And finally, I'm not even a fan of this band. I just think people should maybe open their eyes and not complain when people try to do something for others.

My complaints simply stem from what I view as a band that sold out their orignal belifes and a bunch of rich little suburban kids backing it up because lets face it, you never really gave a fuck about DIY in the first place. As long as you can bob your head along to some 3 cord pop shit, you don't really care about the ethics.
