After 26 years of music, Edmonton, AB's historic local venue The Sidetrack Cafe has closed due to financial difficulty. Opened in 1981, the club's historic legacy was cemented with the addition of a railcar, The Cowley. It was built in 1887 by Pullman works, and had a rich history before parking itself at the Sidetrack; including Playboy photo shoots, Gangster transportation and campaign cars for former prime ministers.
A number of large-name bands that started at the Sidetrack stage include the Weakerthans, the Constantines, kd lang, Sarah MacLachlan and Barenaked Ladies. News (13 comments)

Some of these artists have substantial amounts of money that they could donate to the place as a little thanks for helping them get started but I guess not.

what the fuck is with all of these historic clubs closing down? like the poster above said, there are hundreds of artists that performed not only here, but every other venue closing due to "financial problems", that could donate money or raise awareness about such clubs and maybe it will bring in some more money for the club.

As long as there is a VFW in your town, there will always be great shows. I always hate to see local venues close down. When I was in college, Ralph's Corner Bar closed and that was the greatest place to see a band, but the scene persisted. Hopefully Edmonton will be able to fulfill the needs of its scene.

I agree completely. I live in Edmonton and this is the first I've heard of the Sidetrack closing its doors. I haven't heard of any benefit shows or anything. I've seen a lot of cool bands and local talent rock that place and it totally blows ass that it's gone. There's this all ages venue called The Studio in Edmonton that is holding a bunch of benefit shows to try to stay open. It's a great place and the people that work there volunteer and help get homeless kids off the street. Sad day for Edmonton. The place went downhill after they changed locations though...

sounds like a blow to edmonton. but the city will always find a way to keep going strong. octupus ink will probably keep doing what they're doing. that city will keep producing great bands. no big venue closure will/should keep down the underground, as long as interest in it exists.

wouldn't it be great if there was an independently owned and operated state of the art chain of concert venues in every major city where a band could just book a tour in each venue with out having to worry about clear channel, crappy venues, cerfews, stupid rules against crowd surfing/moshing, or asshole securiy guards? 2+ Replies
