Canadian pop-punk act Fifth Hour Hero has decided to end their run together as a group. Quebec's premier quartet released a collection of albums via No Idea Records, including last year's Not Revenge...Just a Vicious Crush. In a lengthy statement to Punknews.org, bassist Mathieu Guilbault explained the band's decision:
Before we let the negative thoughts destroy all the best memories of being in Fifth Hour Hero, we decided to stop. We don't want money and the bad luck we went through killing our friendship and make Fifth Hour Hero become something it was never meant to be. That's truly why we're going to bury Fifth Hour Hero in June.
The band will complete its final US dates with Smoke or Fire before heading back to Canada for a few last shows with the Sainte Catherines.
We started this band because we loved punk rock and the community that surrounds it. We played tons of basements, living rooms, small clubs, big clubs, all ages venues, squats and festivals. We toured with small bands, we toured with bigger bands, and we went to Europe, Japan and to the U.S. many times. It was unbelievably fun. We met a lot of amazing people. We lived unforgettable experiences.
On the other side, to live these great experiences we made difficult compromises. Every time we left for a tour or to record we would quit our jobs, borrow money from the bank, from the label, from our families, leave home for months on end, we put every cents we had in doing new merch, fixing the van, getting our amps repaired, etc… It was never really easy but we chose to live this way. All these compromises gave us the opportunity to live some amazing experiences with the band.
But, we've been going through that kind of stuff for the last seven years. It's common for people in bands to deal with this, but I don't know a lot of bands that stuck around for that long with the popularity and support we had. A lot of the bands we met along the way got deals from bigger
labels. They got tour support, sponsorships, royalties, etc. We never really seriously looked for that and no one did it for us. The business side of being in a band never charmed us. Some people will admire us for that and some people will tell us we should've gotten our shit together. I don't think there is a right or wrong, it's just how we are. We were never doing it for the money and we never made any money with this band. We were just happy to live new experiences and to travel the world.
Through the years things changed and it became a lot harder for each one of us not to think about the negative aspects of that lifestyle. I mean, want it or not, you can have the highest score at the punk cred game, you still need money to eat, pay your bills or to buy your BORN AGAINST records. We need money to survive as people and as a band. We could keep on getting shitty jobs when we come back from tours, lie to our bosses all the time before going on tour, borrow money from everybody or every financial institution, but we wouldn't be happy and music wouldn't be something fun to us anymore. We always wanted the music to be fun, not a pain in the ass.
Recently, for most of us, it felt like we needed some major changes. Some of us were not stimulated with the music we were playing, some of us didn't feel like practicing anymore, there was definitely a lack of enthusiasm in the band. The dark side of being in FIFTH HOUR HERO was overcoming all the positive things about being in this band.
Before we let the negative thoughts destroy all the best memories of being in FIFTH HOUR HERO, we decided to stop. We don't want money and the bad lucks we went through killing our friendship and make FIFTH HOUR HERO become something it was never meant to be. That's truly why we're going to bury FIFTH HOUR HERO in June.
Until then we will do one last U.S. tour with SMOKE OR FIRE and TIM BARRY in April and a few weekends in Canada with our good friends THE SAINTE CATHERINES in may and June. A big thank you to our friends and our families for their unbelievable support. Thank you. Enjoy life, make it fun!
All of us are still playing music in different projects.
i think its weird that my bands last show was with this band and none more black (which happened to be their 3rd to last show). out of the other two local bands taht played, one has broke up and the other isnt very activ anymore.
I second that. I saw this band grow from there first tour to their last record. I started caring because they were friends, but then they got really good at what they do and I became a fan.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
Their last album was the best material they've ever recorded. I missed them the last time they came through with None More Black and I knew it was going to be a while before they would make the west coast again but I didn't think it would be forever. This is one of the saddest break ups in a long time. This was an awesome band.

its also awkward reading these statements that seem heartfelt about how they want out of music because it hurts them financially, which is okay with me... it makes sense.
then the band post scripts "were all doing other projects by the way."
Can anyone point me to some good HC/punk/crust record stores in Boston? I'll be in the area, and want to waste some $. I did a quick search and came up w/ ReGeneration records... Thanks

This band was really great and I'm sad that they're breaking up. I had a chance to see them recently but the show was sold out (they were opening for Anti-Flag and Rise Against, so it wouldn't have really been in ideal conditions), and I regret that.
This is a terrible year for break-ups. None More Black, Latterman, and now FHH. Shit shit shit, and it's only March. I can't imagine what terrible things will happen in the rest of the year.
disagree, i listen to the new album much more than "no matte where we go." it's a much more consistent effort, and i don't find my self skipping blocks of tracks after repeated listens, like i do with "no matter..."
i wonder if the girl in this band started sleeping with a couple of the dudes in the band, thus creating an emotional conflicting situation that everyone was forced to get out of? if that is the case that is really too bad.
Yep, I bet that's what happened! Women are all lying whores who thrive on causing emotional turmoil and chaos! You've hit the nail right on the ass, dick!
Their 7 inches are also pretty solid. That's the split with no choice, the split with ste4 and the other one on no idea. The japanese split, I haven't heard yet...
Their "You Hurt my Business" EP is a really good start. Great songs that showcase the bands variety and it's only an EP, so if you don't like it you're out like $3.

Plus it features "Badly Drawn" my all time favorite FHH song.
This is a very sad day in music. But, I'm super glad they at least put out "Not Revenge.." cause that was an essential record for last year and I'm sure they are gonna start some amazing new bands!! Much love FHH, you french Canadian fucks!
I'm pretty sure that they started in 1998. That's the first time I saw them anyways. They were called Kisses and Guns on 1997 though. This is one of the few bands that just kept getting better and better over time. They will be missed.
good thing I saw these guys a couple times, simply amazing band, it's a shame, but hopefully their new projects will be just as good, I can't imagine them not to -drunkenriot
shit!...they better still be playing the toronto date with tim barry and smoke or fire..fuck, i've been waiting to see them for a while now..this sucks, i just got into them a while back, and this happens.
this kinda sucks, I never got big into them but they were a good band. I fortuntely got to see them as they were playing shows with The Lovekill on their way down to the last Fest. Pretty good live band, good luck with any future projects guys/and gal.
I'm pretty sure that the delays to release the last album was a contributing factor. However, No Idea put a lot of support into this band and made it possible for them to go to Japan and such.
This certainly does suck.. I find them to be much better live than on cd (although they're still pretty damn good recorded) so I'm glad I've been able to see them live a handful of times over the last couple of years.. especially the back-to-back nights with St Catherines and None More Black. Tthose were two of the best shows I've ever seen.
At least I'll get to see them one more time with Smoke or Fire and Timmy B at the kathedral.
first dont care
