90s Punk Documentary with NOFX, Offspring, Blink 182, Rancid, Green Day, Bad Religion

Robot Academy Films, an independent production company set up by two 22 year old Australian's are currently in production for a film on the 90's punk rock explosion titled One Nine Nine Four.

The documentary which is set to be a full length feature documents the birth, growth and explosion of punk rock in the 90's and features interviews with bands such as NOFX, the Offspring, Blink 182, Rancid, Bad Religion, Lagwagon and many more.

The 2 film makers have been residing in Los Angeles since January shooting interviews and collecting archival footage before returning to Australia this month to start editing. The film will be narrated by Tony Hawk and is yet to have distribution or a release date but will hit the festival circuit in 2008.

Ok.
The first two Offspring records were good, and then they became self aware and sucked ass.
The first two Blink182 records were good, and the third one was ok then they went downhill.
Bad religion has had one really bad record, The Grey Race.
Green Day had Warning which was god awful.
Rancid had Life Won't Wait and Rancid 2000 which weren't very good.
NOFX still sounds the same in my opinion.
Never really like Lagwagon, so i don't have anything to say.

Wrong.
The first Offspring had a couple of good songs but over all was not very good. Each supsequent album sucked balls.
Blink 182 just plain sucked and always has.
The Grey Race was really bad. Stranger than Fiction and Recipe for Hate weren't that great either. Every other album has been brilliant (except for Into the Unknown).
Green Day has not yet made a bad record
Rancid's first album was bad but each album since has been perfection.
NOFX made Heavy Petting Zoo and Pump up the Valume which were both horrible. All their other albums are good.
I never liked Lagwagon either (RKL was much better).

Almost every Offspring record has been good, people just give em a bad name because of the pretty fly for a white guy song.
NOFX has put out the same record 5 times.
Bad Religion almost always sounds the same.
Every Green Day record has been great except for American Idiot. I don't understand all of the shit with Warning. That record is good.
Lagwagon isn't that good.
Rancid has put out a lot of good music and "and of comes the wolves" is one of the greatest punk records of the 90's.
Blink 182 was alright but went way downhill.

The Offspring have increasingly inconsistent albums, with crap songs and singles, and some good songs thrown in there to throw you off.

I kind of agree about blink. Don't really know what happened after Dude Ranch... but, I didn't think the albums after that were too terrible.

The Grey Race?? Worst Bad Religion album?? What the fuck?! The New America and No Substance were undeniably worse. They just plain sucked. The Grey Race was decent.

I generally like most of Green Day's stuff--including Warning and American Idiot (especially Warning.) I'm just sick of them.

Rancid really, in my opinion has Rancid 2000 that wasn't very good. As for NOFX and Lagwagon, I can't say much, as I don't really listen to them very often...

The Grey Race was fucking great, the best album between Against The Grain and Process of Belief. Stranger Than Fiction sucked, the The New America and whatever the other one was (No Substance?) were terrible too. I'd put in Generator in the suck pile but I only listened to that one once or twice, and didn't really care after that.

-Every Green Day Record is at least decent, though I can definitely do without American Idiot, Nimrod and the first one. Insomniac and Warning are two of the most underrated records of the past 10-15 years.

-Same with the Offpsring. They release terrible singles, but the albums have remained pretty good. I don't care if it's cliche, Smash is one of the best punk records ever made.

-Rancid has made 5 great albums and one mediocre one (indestructible). They are douches as people, but they continue to make killer music.

-NoFx and Bad Religion have always been slightly overrated to me and very very repepitive, but their importance and influence makes them absolutely deserve most of their fame.

-Blink made one great record. most sucked.

-Lagwagon just plain sucked. Period. No one can hate or love them, because they're just so bland and noring and nuetral. I'd rather hear a terrible band than a bland band.

Sure they do. Pre Travis they were a speedy sunglasses wearin' skate punk band. Music went to complete hell when retarded kids who were 14 when Enema came out started trillions of copycat bands and managed to fuck up all the good aspects of blink and emphasize the horrible.

There is however a vast difference between messy haired ugo versions of Christina Applegate (regardless of gender) holding candles and crying over Kurts death on the news and people who made fun of that shit while thrashing out to Pennywise and NOFX with a skateboard in long shorts.

Nirvana, OFfspring and GreenDay may have blurred those borders slightly with thier shared contemporary success, but you can't tell me an Alice In Chains fan was the same 90s kid as a guy in an OPIV beanie.

Green Day didn't kill grunge music as much as they killed punk rock and what punk rock is all about.
I like what the experts and pioneers of punk rock say about them...I found these quotes on wikipedia and I totally agree.

John Lydon, former front man of both the 1970s punk band the Sex Pistols and the 1980s post-punk act, Public Image Ltd.:

Fuck, I remember seeing Green Day at Lollapalooza 94 and opening the whole show on the mainstage @ about 2pm with Beastie Boys and Smashing Pumpkins headlining the night @ like 9 or 10.....on that summer day, i would have never guessed they would have had such an impact on rock music and the course it took afterward, nor become the band that they are.....I'm glad I was there

Probably the most unnecessary movie about punk ever produced. Who really cares? We all know what happened and The Year Punk Broke is probably far more comprehensive than this only because they seem to focus only on Epitaph, Fat, Warped Tour and Green Day.

probably the single MOST neccessary....the fucking mid/late seventies era has been done to death, the early 80s LA thing has gotten more than enough attention, and since the third peak in the 90s is now commonly acknowledged as the old school for todays up and comers, its overdue. as for the year punk broke - that doc didn't really have much to do with punk or anything recognized as punk today, and most of its footage would be better served as an ad for the gap or a diet cola.

maybe it is overdue but in some respects, that may help the documentary. i think at least a good 10 years since that mid 90s explosion is necessary to give you a better perspective and understanding of the significance of that time period and in what ways it has influenced future kids and bands, which is in the here and now. actually, perfect timing i'd say. i am a little skeptical that the people making it were too young to remember that time. because it seems like the premise is the death of cobain followed by the rebirth of punk. that's as ignorant as other punk documentaries that ended with the sex pistols breaking up and then nirvana coming out of nowhere.

Come on. You know damn well that 90's punk was the biggest gateway to the genre, possibly ever. Any documentaries that even touch on the period often leave out some of the most important bands of the time period. Groups like Lagwagon, Face to Face, Dropkick Murphys, Bad Religion, NOFX, Rancid...hell pretty much the entire mid-late 90's rosters of Fat, Epitaph, Lookout!, Nitro, etc.

And so what if they only focus on these things? I love Black Flag, Minor Threat, DK, etc. but I want to see something that really pertains to my era. Those of us that were in high school at the start of the Warped Tour. That have great memories of that time. Perspectives such as yours sound slightly jaded.

No, I've never seen how much work you've done with Fat. I did not know that your personal back story was necessary to understanding where the joke was coming from.

I wasn't concerning myself with Fat Mike or your view of him. I was merely stating that you made a bad joke, people took it out of context and you laughed at them from "not getting it."

In the future I'll remember to look at the overall history and involvement in the "scene" of every poster who makes a joke on this site before judging the quality of said "joke." That way I'll make sure not to overlook the "forest."

right on. i think the key to a good punk documentary is that it shouldn't include more than it can handle. those 2 films had the right idea in focusing on a particular scene in a specific point in time. i mean, you're right in there. and even then, in my opinion, decline still had some holes in it because there were a bunch of important bands that could've been included but were left out. the newest docs that came out last year like punk's not dead and american hardcore were decent. but i think a lot of us were looking for more depth and that's tough to do with that many bands in that long of a time period. i don't know where this one is going but it looks like they're sticking with the biggest california bands which is the right step.

Shouldn't it be called "Welcome to Paradise" or "Longview" or something? Even "Salvation" would be great. "1994" makes it sound like punk was nowhere in 94, when it had been steadily growing since Bad Religion put out "Suffer"

Weezer were pretty good at building simple yet incredibly catchy tunes. That may be why they never bothered upping their technical skills and ended up rehashing the same style of quickly put-together songs. Island In The Sun is a great example of a song that's only appreciated for its ironical value. Not sure that's a good thing, but it's something...

"Esteem Driven Engine" came out in late '96 so Pulley kind of missed the biggest time for the 90's punk explosion. I'm not sure when the first strung out dropped, but, I agree that Pennywise should've probably been included.

Did you ever read MRR or really any fanzine from the early-mid nineties? I'm not saying it's the "right" way to think, but most of the people involved with punk at that time went out of their way to distance themselves from post Bleach Nirvana. And Alice in Chains and their ilk was looked on with distain by the punks. That shit was for the "edgier" jocks and potheads.
