According to the latest reports, the CD buying public has cut their CD purchasing by almost 17% in the past few months. According to Nielsen SoundScan, for the period running from January 1 through April 2, CD album sales were at about 117.1 million units, a drastic decrease in numbers. However, digital sales appear to be on the rise, at about 281.7 millions. Equating single tracks into albums for a means of comparison only leaves digital sales down 10.3%, which is about normal considering post-holiday spending habits.
With the increased use of legal download services like eMusic and iTunes, many labels have started to utilize these services for exclusive music, most notably the recent "digital-only" release by the Draft. On the flipside, some labels are now also embracing digital downloads as the premiere means of selling music, such as Record Theory, and most recently the decision by Canada's G7 Welcoming Committee to become a digital-release only label. i recently increased my cd purchasing drastically, so those numbers are probably a bit off, the CD buying public in general has probably decreased by about 17.0000000000000005% in actuality 3+ Replies

This kind of sucks. I understand how it can be attractive to small indie lables to sell their music digitally, since it eliminates the middle man (costs such as packaging etc) but at the same time, there is something so satisfying about actually holding a physical CD or record in your hand. This will also hurt small indie record stores. 3+ Replies

As long as sites like Interpunk, smartpunk ect are around that's who's gonna get my money. Actual CDs with artwork is where its at.

I'll be the first to admit I've never payed for any of the music I've downloaded. That being said, everytime I've enjoyed something that I downloaded, I purchased the actual CD within about a week. 8+ Replies

what I don't understand is why this sudden drop when all the digital technology that's available now has been here for upwards of 5 years. it seems everyone is in a panic, but is this really the future or just a cyclical lag? 4+ Replies

Do people who listen to music not want something tangible when they buy something? I just don't get the whole digital download thing. When I pay for music I want the cover, i want the booklet, i want the lyrics and i want the actual CD. I have ~375 bought CD's the last time I checked and i'll continue buying them. 4+ Replies

who the hell buys a CD just to sit around and look at the artwork? Isn't the music what should really matter? Fact is that digital downloading is becoming the future and there's nothing anyone can do about it. You can bitch about it all you want but there WILL come a day when CD's are obsolete. 7+ Replies

I can see the pros for labels for mp3s, means they save insane amounts of cash on cds + distribution. 2+ Replies

I see the most popular argument is the idea of having a tangible object, which I am totally behind, but there are other downs about digital downloads, like sound quality. I mean, iTunes uses lossless encoding but quite a few other places just use 128kb mp3s. 3+ Replies

Well, the reason for that theory, at least in my opinion, is because the only good albums to come out so far this year are the new Stooges disc and new Bright Eyes. 1+ Reply

It's too bad really but how many of those digital buyers are hardcore music fans? Vinyl still does well and CDs do sell because music geeks like to have the whole package. Sure downloading is convenient, but I'd much rather own something than just sounds coming out of a computer. 1+ Reply

the cd's i really enjoy are ones that, upon first listen, i lay down with the liner notes open and really get into the entire album. i love buying cd's. 2+ Replies

Another reason cd sales are down, is because those Joeys that only buy like 3 cds a year are not buying them anymore, and are spending that money on some other form of entertainment. 1+ Reply

First i would like to say I download my shit for free. I know lame, for those of you whos mommy and daddy support your new found glory habit i envy you. The fact of the matter is What the fuck does a cd cost??? A fucking $1 if that. I remember back when I got my first cd (green day dookie) and paid $20. This was 1994, I then read a article at a friends house(i think it was time mag) and it had a interview with a higher up at one of the majors. They said by 1995 we would pay $5 for a new cd. I know I know support the artist, but come on, Who the fuck out there would pay $5 for penny candy?? 3+ Replies

It seems like everybody is missing the point as to why formats fade out. There must be an extreme disadvantages with older formats for a new one to take over. I can not see anything being better than a CD. Even Super Audio (etc.) aren't that much better because music really does work better in stereo. The flaws with things like 8 Track, Cassettes, Records etc. is the issue of either sound quality, size issues, and the fact that none of these can have the tracks simply skipped through with the touch of a button (fast forwarding doesnt count, huge pain in the ass). So, fact is, CD's still have huge benefits over downloading for back up purposes and the like so stop saying we are going to be living in the past because sometimes old formats just don't die and stay strong for good reason. Did the DVD kill movie theaters? No. 1+ Reply

It's really sad that CDs are on the decline as a format. I'm also slighly surprised. It makes so much more sense to just buy the CD and then copy it to a digital format than to download it off a music store for nearly the same price. The digital data on a CD is entirely uncompressed unlike MP3s and of much higher sound quality. Why sell yourself short and not have the original CD for nearly the same price? It's only a matter of time before an uncompressed format such as WAV files becomes the standard for digital music as hard drive sizes get larger. All of you people who bought your music off of an online store will be screwed and have to download again to get the original quality of an uncompress digital file. All of you who bought the CD will just have to pop it in your computer and re-rip it. It's also a shame that digit show rest of comment 1+ Reply

just buy the goddamn CD. I'm so far from being rich, but if I like a band (and i'm usually into smaller "independent" bands) i'm not going to fuck them by enjoying their art and not compensating them for it. It's so fucking weak that people on here are saying shit about stealing propagandhi's music, etc. because they don't want to pay the 12 bucks for it. lame. i hope you all get robbed at some point in your lives.
Someone (April 7, 2007)
Ok is anyone else going to blame the fact that most music fucking sucks these days? Yeah people are sick of fucking buying a Beyonce CD for one or two fucking "hit singles" when they can go download those songs instead of buyig the entire piece of shit. People were worried about this back when boy bands were all of the rage and all of the sudden the shit stopped selling, well fucking duh trends come and go. 1+ Reply
