Connecticut to adopt "official punk rock song"

Connecticut is currently considering two new bills to create official state songs. The state already uses "Yankee Doodle," as their official state song, but the legislature is reportedly considering adding both an official polka, and an official punk rock song.

The punk rock song in question is "Connecticut Fun" - recorded in 1983 by an informal, ad-hoc group of Connecticut punk musicians recording under the name Punkestra. It's unabashedly pro-Connecticut, with lyrics imploring listeners to come out and enjoy punk music in the state.

State representative Diana Urban explained:

We can move something like this through the legislative process, and it gives us a chance to step back and giggle a little. I'd love this to be the state punk-rock song. If you can't step back and have a little fun, then you're taking yourself too seriously.

Way to spread around generalizations. Sure, there are "many" punks who don't care about school and are total burnouts, but I was an honor student for all 3 years of high school, and there were several "punks" in my AP English classes.

There are lots of intelligent, academic punks in high school classes and on University campuses. Don't talk down to the genre by pretending that we don't care about education.

Because everyone who listens to Pennywise is a bro. The majority of bros live in California, and they have been around so long one of them was bound to pick a CD up. That, and calling on someone for saying Bro in southern California is like complaining about Boston accents at a Dropkick Murphys concert. At least give some respect for a band, even if you don't like their music, that has had a significant impact on socal punk and still puts on one of the best live shows despite their last two albums being subpar when compared to their other albums.

Oh, stop taking things so seriously. That's the whole moral of the story here. Shouldn't people be observing how Connecticut is trying to accept and embrace the punk rock subculture? It's not like they're organizing lengthy and costly meetings on the state of some punk song. It's just a way to lighten things up in the margin. Try keeping an opened mind and enjoy things once in a while.

And it's not at all about New England in the Northeast US, it's about "a new" England according to the person who wrote it. That's what he said when he played it live way back then when it was relatively a new song. That's another song that never needs to be covered again. being a lifelong resident of ct, and playing a small role in underground music for the last 15 years or so, i'm ok with it. it's a fun song, put together by a "supergroup" (of sorts) of some of the best ct bands at the time. do i think the state legislature could be doing something more productive with their time? sure...but have you ever actually read through legislative bills? there's plenty of other things being done with my tax money i find much more offensive and wasteful.

and seriously come to ct for a bit, and listen to punk rock with us. you'll get to see that there are some trust fund kids, and there are people who scrounge up change. we have the richest 1% of the country....but that's only a very small part of population. the rest of us still have to pay the highest taxes, the highest utilities, close to the highest gas prices, etc. in the countr

As, unfortunately, a Connecticut resident, why not? I'll take anything that makes the state even a bit less lame.

I remember there being a bit of an issue when the Connecticut Post criticized the state legislature for naming a state cookie and several letter writers got angry. This is equally pointless to argue over. It's not like they're going to be doing much anyway.
