Rolling Stone investigates the FSU and James Morrison murder

One of Rolling Stone's reporters decided to look into the FSU and the murder of James Morrison which took place in January of this year. In the ensuing weeks, rumours of FSU involvement and speculation about racial undercurrents caused much speculation about the nature of the crime and the motivations of the perpetrators. Most notably, it drew national attention to the infamous hardcore "crew," the FSU.

The article, titled Punk Rock Fight Club: The Gang Behind the Mosh-Pit Killings was written by Mark Binelli and runs nine pages in the magazine. Unfortunately, the article itself is not available online, but a 3 minute, narrated "slideshow" does discuss some of the more pertinent issues. Also mentioned are some of the other crews as well as the controversial Boston Beatdown series.

I was at Rock the Bells this weekend and some guy had an FSU tattoo on his chest. I thought it was kind of odd to see a guy like that at a hip hop show in San Francisco, but maybe he was their for Rage Against the Machine (who balanced between amazing and mediocre, if you were curious).

Because I see very little presence by FSU here in the Bay Area at all and I don't see why it would be the kind of thing you'd be flaunting at a show where you're clearly the minority and out of your element.
There was no reason to have your shirt off as it wasn't more than 70 degrees, and he hadn't had it ripped off as it was tied around his waist. And he wasn't surrounded by a "crew" it was him and maybe two other guys.
But yeah, follow me from thread to thread and insult me. Maybe that will get you friends.

Dante, there have actually been crews named "FSU" before the one in Boston started. A whole different thing. Alot of skaters used to use the term alot for "Fuck Shit Up" as well.

Yeah, there was definitely one in Southern Cal in the early-mid 80s, that had no connection with the Boston crew.
Lots of FSU guys are into hiphop, and there are members in LA and Seattle, but not SF from what I know. It's definitely possible someone traveled there. I know there are some ties with some of the Sacto guys and the OBHC guys, so it's possible one of them had the tattoo, as well.

FSU is not a gang. it's not anything like MS13, bloods or crips. they're nothing more than a bunch of meatheads who like to police the hardcore scene. the reason you probably haven't seen many FSU members in san francisco is because you don't go to hardcore shows.

Haha, so I can see sick of it all (Several years past when they should have stopped) and Madball (who were never that good to begin with)? Sure thing, I got $15 I was just going to light on fire but that sounds good. Honestly, though Sinking Ships isn't too bad.

dang, this is really funny. i just read this article on friday at borders here in santa fe new mexico and i wondered to my self when punknews would make a headline about it. also, i wondered if anybody would make a jab at the awesome cover of some person who i don't know, but i guess is famous on the disney channel.

in Philly shows FSU members are very prominate in the scene. "Joe Hardcore" a FSU member that was jailed for some reason last year, is some sort of local philly legend. They sold shirts at the First Unitarian Church that red "Free Joe Hardcore" and everyhting. I'm not sure what he was in for but im pretty sure it had to do with the FSU. He actually set up and organized the This Is Hardcore fest recently. I go to a lot of hardcore shows and the FSU population is very high, most of the time they cause unnecessary trouble, but nothing too too bad.

94-97? I would hardly call that the 'glory days' if I was going to take that sort of fatalist opinion. I mean... there are a couple of good bands specific to that time, but most of them were either ending or are still around. As for today having tough guys? That era had Earth Crisis, Vegan Reich, and One Life Crew. There are always 'tough guys'.
