The Playing Favorites, the new band featuring Joey Cape (Lagwagon, Bad Astronaut) Luke Tierney (Penfifteen Club) Marko DeSantis (Sugarcult, Bad Astronaut, Popsicko) Mick Flowers (The Rentals, The Lapdancers, Popsicko) and Tim Cullen (Summercamp, Popsicko), have generously provided us (and you) with a full album stream of their debut album. The record is titled I Remember When I Was Pretty and is due out December 04, 2007.

question for anyone who plays acoustic guitar:

i need new strings for my acoustic and i was wondering if i should try nylon strings. have any of you or do you use nylon strings? the strings i have now are tearing my fingers apart.

Nylon is for classical playing. It gives a much more warm, classical sound. So if you're playing contemporary-style guitar music, it doesn't sound right. Though I suppose if you're playing with your fingers you might be playing more classical style...

wrong. i doubt your playing any piazolla or bach or barrios. don't get nylon unless you plan on being a classical guitar player. are you just starting? it hurts when you first start playing.

as for all the people that say fuck nylon, well, fuck you. because you can't even fathom what it takes to play it.

Word, homey. And thank you....I was taught classically and have been at it for 13 years and I kept reading how "gay" the nylon stuff is, so it's nice to see someone who knows what it takes to play it.

exactly right, they are for a classical guitar which is a very different shape. Just grabe a low gauge set of acoustic strings, ask someone at your local music store for help.

Just get some Extra Light gauge acoustic strings...it'll feel like an electric guitar. The tone is gonna die a little bit, but without the proper bridge and tuners, you won't even be able to do the knot tie that is required with nylon strings.

You should try out the Elixir brand of strings. They run a little more expensive, but they feel and sound better than any other string I've ever used, and they last for a rather long time.

so tear your fingers apart. build your callouses. and as arnie said, stop whining.

i use the ernie ball 10 gauges, pretty standard.

nylon strings seem to work better for classical guitar, if that's what you're looking for. as some folks mentioned, you tend to lose a little bit of the tone, and it sounds muted.

roll with it and stick to the nickel-wound regular gauge strings. don't get the copper-wound. i got suckered into it by my friend, and they broke the first week of play.

10 gauge nickel wound strings are for electric guitar and don't get the bright acoustic sound that you would desire. Acoustic "light gauge" strings are generally around 12 gauge. Also, 10 gauge strings aren't gonna "tear your fingers" apart either. He should still get copper or bronze wound strings, or try Elixirs if you want the strings to last a long time.

You pretty much gave this guy the worst recommendation.

This ended up being a little more poppy than I expected. It's not bad but I think I just wanted more Bad Astronaut, which wasn't really fair.

I like it. It really does remind me of something between Bad Astronaut and Lagwagon. It's melancholy but catchy.

The more you play your fingers will get calissed and that is the solution to your problem. Oh yea and dont be a pussy and stay away from coated guitar strings.

It's alright. It's not as memorable as Bad Astronaut or The Caper's acoustic work but it still is some pretty catchy rock music.

Even if you're not a fan of it, at least this is out of Joey's system and he can continue on to the next project. Me personally, I want more acoustic tunes.

Upon first listen, this is a bummer. First two songs they released, "Leavingtown" and "Indigenous" were great. The album is a definite letdown...maybe it will grow on me.

After ı listened 4 songs at their myspace ı gave up this record-until now. it doesn't sound too bad at all, it's between lost bad astronaut record and sugarcult b-side record (lost again) also i realy like the drum sound. But overall, ıt doesn't reflect the Joey's multi layered talent and brave side upon the same old punk rock scene...

as long as you didn't expect this to be Bad Astronaut (and yeah it's not as good as them) i don't see what's bad about this, the songwriting's strong
