Against Me!'s "Cliche Guevara" and Tom's best of 2007

Wrapping a few Against Me! submissions together today; the team at Punkrockvids recently shot a very quality live performance of "Cliche Guevara" at the House of Blues in Orlando, FL. You can check it out here.

As well, frontman Tom Gabel recently posted his list of favorite albums and performances of 2007. The feature is part of the MySpace "Year In Music" series which previously hosted the favorites of Bad Religion's Brett Gurewitz.

Sitting Army was Great, Destroy Their Future shoulda been all over the radio, and Sink or Swim was easily the best record of the year.

I went to the Chicago stop of the tour, and the entire staff were huge pieces of shit. I'm sure that's how they were trained, so fuck their manager.
And fuck the 13-year-old girls with their itty-bitty-titties jumping up and down.

I was there too, the staff were total cocks. Also, the stage is almost coedically high. Good thing I saw them acoustic the next night at a smaller place.

2007 was a great year for music. If you don't think it was I would say you probably haven't been looking at the right labels. Get over the fact that Fatwreck and Epitaph suck and start buying albums from good labels. Its Alive, Deranged, No Idea, Dirtnap, Kiss of Death, Fashionable Idiots, 1234 Go, and BYO all put out some great records this year. Just because a band doesn't have thousands of fans or a hype machine behind em doesn't mean they are not great. Read MaximumRockNRoll and Razorcake and other zines. Punk is about expanding and searching, not just saying "oh music this year sucked. It was so much better in the 90's." Fuck the 90's. Music today is just as good as any music from the past.

So wrong. Saying 90's punk is better than 00's punk is ridiculous. It just shows you haven't been listening to the right labels. There have been so many amazing albums released in 00's. Punk is expanding and improving.

This is always the stupidest debate when it comes up. It's really just a matter of differing opinions that cannot be reconciled. To say that punk didn't expand in the 90's is idiotic. "The Shape of Punk to Come" was released in '98 and (good or bad) it was an amazing departure for punk, a true art album.

Likewise tons of bands have released amazing albums in the past couple of years. It would be negligent to ignore the works of bands on labels like No Idea or Deep Elm, Recess Records or 1-2-3-4 Go!.

Honestly, it's just a matter of taste. I look at people who hold one decade over another as either ignorant of the past or trapped in it.

OK I never said that punk didn't expand in the 90's. I am saying it is expanding now (which it is). I am not saying 00's punk is better than 90's punk, saying that would be just as ridiculous as saying 90's punk is better than 00's punk. Neither is better or worse. I've heard albums from those labels. Some of them are good, some are average with a lot of people promoting them because they're good guys. I'm not saying 90s punk is necessarily better than what came out this year. I'm saying 2006 and, by the looks of even the first three months' releases, 2008 are both far, far better than this year. The only albums I can think of that challenged me or kept my interest for longer than a week were Gaslight Anthem, Bedouin Soundclash, J Church, Lifetime and Sounds Like Violence, and the latter two really aren't even that interesting in retrospect.

"Sitting Army" is a damn good album and I'm glad Tom shows some love. I really like "addicted to bad ideas" but it's hard to get past the fact that it's 11(right?) songs with three previously released songs. Still a damn good album.
And Bright Eyes was awesome in Spider Man 3.

Rich, I love you if for no other reason, introducing me to Cobra Skulls ... but the W/IFS album is Awesome from start to finish. I understand the whole thing about redone songs, but given that it's a "Concept Album" with the aforementioned songs reworked, I can get past it.

But yes, three recorded versions of "Peter Lorre" is a bit much, agreed. Even though the newest one is by far, the best.

the lighting/iris issues didn't get me so much as cutting back and forth from a static camera to a handheld, especially when the shot was similar/the same. and most of the handheld stuff seemed sort of fake, like they were trying to make it seem like they were getting tossed around "by the kids" etc...

i've filmed shows from front row center before, and had less camera shake...

best albums of the year imo

1. sounds like violence - i ended up listening to this thing a hell of a lot more than i expected to. a couple mediocre songs, but a bunch of really incredible ones. they're swedish too, and the lyrics are hilarious, "you were fucking with my brain/ so i shot you in the head". great stuff.

black lips - another album with a few marginal songs, but overall it's just fantastic. "navajo" has the greatest chorus of all time... no wait "it feels alright" does. "lock and key" is the best song they've ever written, and the production suits them nicely.

the hives - this is my biggest disappointment of the year. i expected it to be my number one, but half of it just doesn't deliver and sounds too much like devo. on the other hand however; tick tick boom, try it again, hey little world, won't be long, t.h.e. h.i.v.e.s.,

8 Diagrams isn't even a fucking album. It's the joke that every member of the Wu predicted it would be and it's probably the death nail in a legendary acts coffin.
That said, I haven't checked out the new Ghostface. I loved Fishscale but found the interludes annoying, and I listen to songs more than the full album. Seriously, skits and interludes are probably the worst thing to happen to rap music since P. Diddy.

...As the Eternal Cowboy is their best album. Saw 'em around the time it came out and it was one of the best shows ever. Basement of one of the buildings at S.U.

i'm 24 and after a shitty breakup went from 180 to 166 pounds. i've stopped losing weight but i am still a little flabby. how can i harden up my mid section. crunches seem to be working only real slow and really it's not that much. i drink a lot of beer. is my only option to quit all the booze. i do lots of running. 4 miles 5 times a week. any suggestions on how to stop this plateau i've hit and get a little more hard/lean?
