Media: Pennywise: "Something To Live For"

Our pals over at Alternative Press have premiered the first song from Pennywise has titled their upcoming record Reason To Believe. You can stream "Something To Live For" at the AP media page.

The full length is due on on March 25, 2008 via MySpace Records. It follows up the band's final release for longtime label Epitaph, 2005's The Fuse. We posted the cover art a few weeks ago.

As previously announced, aside from traditional CD and vinyl editions, the label is offering up the entire album as a free digital download via a Textango promotion. Anyone who adds Textango's profile as a friend on the social networking site MySpace will get access to the songs.

It's that arcade game with an actually "skateboard" deck thing, and if I remember correctly, the soundtrack was comprised of three or four Pennywise songs. It was awful.

i remember that game, it's where i first heard of pennywise. prior to that, the heaviest and punkest band i'd ever heard was the offspring. still like both bands tbh, they were my gateway into a shit-ton of lesser known bands.

Your comment make me think about how long it's been since he died, which lead me to thinking about "Hey everybody, AIDS is finally funny!"

I understand where people are coming from w/ the "they've released the same album 5 times". But am I the only one that though they did some different things on From the Ashes, and that it was a really good album? The Fuse didn't have alot of replay w/ me, but I really liked From the Ashes.

I think "Pennywise" and "Straight Ahead" are the best, closely followed by "About Time" and "Unknown Road".

For me, the only time "too soon" is relevant is about 12 hours of the news breaking.

Seriously, though, I know he was their friend and it is tragic what happened, but it seems to me they've veered from honoring his memory to exploiting it. The fact that Thirsk wrote Bro Hymn made it that after his suicide, they would forever have the perfect concert closer. It seems like keep reminding everyone about what happened and have done at least three recorded versions of Bro Hymn. To me it all starts to feel tacky and exploitative, hence my comment.

No, I agree with you, it does kind of seem that way. But I do still like the song and get chills when I hear it live. Not so much for Matthew, but it just makes me think about people I've lost.

In a related note, are there any worse lyrics than "Those are people who died, died. They were all my friends.....and they died"? Great fucking movie though.

i used to have a thing about the little plastic grocery seperator bars they put on the conveyer belt at supermarkets. i wouldn't touch them. if i was behind someone, i'd make them put it down, and if i was ahead of someone, i'd make them put it down.

That song is awesome. It was also in E.T. When I listen to it, my kid (18 months) says "die, die" over and over. However, the cover by the band P is not good.

Yeh i think from the ashes is their best. People are jackasses if they think every album is the same. Clearly its not mind blowing, but they do experiment a bit with every album. This new song sounds slower

After I listened to the stream, I was listening to some of the other songs on the AP page (mostly garbage). It reminded me that for all the hype they get, I think Big D is REALLY overrated. It's not bad, just mediocre. Their live show didn't do much for me either.

I think it sounds kinda like something from the Straight Ahead/LOTF-era, certainly better than the fuse. Until the singing starts. Just like on New Maps Of Hell you can hear how the old epitaph crew is getting old. Not much of a dissapointment though.

Well this really takes the term corporate rock to a whole new level.

Interesting how ever since the "album" stopped being a product in its own right music has just turned into another promotional tool for mass marketing advertisers like Myspace.

In the past there used to be a tangible seperation between Artist, Label and Advertisers. If a band promoted a product, they did so in their own seperate capacity as party to the transaction.

Now the advertising agent (Myspace, whose revenue is based on selling advertisement space) is actually contracting directly with the bands to produce and release the music. Is this not scary to anyone else?

Myspace is owned by News Corp which has a market capitalization of $60,560,000,000.

I'm just annoyed that everyone's going all digital on us. I still appreciate the tangible aspect of an actual CD.

Otherwise, I'm not bothered. Business isn't scary. Besides, they're offering the album for free. That means you don't have to give anyone anything, except a brief add to some page that you could remove as soon as you have the album. I find myspace annoying as well, but there is a trade off here. You're trying too hard to be offended, I think.
