Boston's Street Dogs have signed to Hellcat Records. The Mike McColgan lead act will release their fourth album this year on the Epitaph-imprint. Earlier this month the band entered a Los Angeles studio with producer Ted Hutt (Bouncing Souls, Flogging Molly) to record the follow up to 2006's Fading American Dream. McColgan commented:
I feel like this new release will sound like a battle royal wrestling match, with bands like U2, AC/DC, Thin Lizzy, The Ramones, TV On The Radio, Stiff Little Fingers, Bloc Party, Michael Franti and The Clancy Brothers being the contestants/influences... I think fans can expect a release that is powerful, at times mean, and one that shows growth musically as well... We have always said that we work for the freedom to say and play whatever we want, and on this upcoming release that ethos has never been or sounded stronger.
The band has a number of tour dates scheduled for the coming months.
Yeah, not to mention every other band up there. Ramones are a viable influence, as well as Stiff Little Fingers, but everything else? What the fuck do these guys listen to?
ACDC and Thin Lizzy, two of the greatest rock n roll bands of all time, and hugely influential on punk rock. You realize U2 came directly out of the punk scene, and were and remain one of the most political and politically active bands of all time. I'm also pretty sure they're not saying their influenced by "Pop" or "Dismantle the Atomic Bomb," but rather their first few records.
yeah, they get bummed out and then wander around aimlessly and the ones who do try to do something throw punches like as if their arms have dislocated.
One of the consistantly great live bands out there right now. My favorite DKM stuff was with Mike McColgan anyway, so it made perfect sense that the Street Dogs would be just as good, if not better and to me, I'm right. I see them whenever I can, can't wait for the new album
Now let's just hope they return to the form of "Back to the World." Fading American Dream was a real crapfest, in my opinion. Yes, I know you disagree, and no, I don't care.
Predictable even if I ain't ever heard this band. Hellcat's all about image. Their target audience is 14-16 yr. olds. Rather listen to Rockabilly, soul, blues, surf any fuckin' day. At least that shit is raw and real and don't post for stupid fuckin' punk scene photos.
I'm glad they signed. Their last record was amazing, and I think it's a shame more people don't know about these guys. Plus, their live show is second to none.
I'm getting sick of punk bands listing a long list of classic rock bands as influences, and then releasing just another punk record that sounds like all their others. If this record sounds anything like they say, it would be awesome. But I am predicting some more generic Boston punk music.
hahaha Yeah man, AC/DC and Thin Lizzy... and how many punk bands AREN'T influenced at least a little bit by those 2 bands? Hardly constitutes a "long list of classic rock bands".
Bottom line: Streets Dogs are one of the best bands on the planet. Amaaaazing live show. Incredible albums. Something important to say. And I love that they list all of these influences. There's nothing better than seeing that a great punk band is so open-minded about their music.
I'm not from boston, but I really don't think the Boston scene has a signature sound. Sure, DKM and Street Dogs share a common sound, but there's also bands like the unseen, toxic narcotic, ducky boys, slapshot and mouth sewn shut that sound nothing like street dogs or Dropkick.
I have to agree, not with the 'classic rock' bit but just about listing a load of bands you just know won't come out in the sound at all, they've just put them their to draw as many people in as possible and persuade people they're "artists". What these guys are basically promising is the most progressive, universally acclaimed album in the history of music. Excuse me if i don't hold my breath. They're a solid punk band, isn't that enough?
Since the last tourdate with Anti-Flag is May 3rd... and Antiflag is playing the Bamboozle in Jersey on May 4th...
... i'm only guessing that the Streetdogs will be added to play w/ the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Anti-Flag, Less Than Jake, and The Bouncing Souls on May 4th. It's been a long time since i've really looked forward to a festival lineup (yes, i know, i'd rather see a FULL live show from a band instead too)... but this is going to be awesome.
Name dropping Michael Franti just increased my respect for this band tenfold, I already an enormous amount of respect for them to begin with. I've never met him, but Mike McColgan comes off as a really nice guy from the times I've seen them live, I could be wrong but that's the impression that I get.
Interesting move considering Flogging Molly and Street Dogs share the same management, in that case one would expect Side One. I remember it was really difficult to find Savin Hill anywhere at first, so the distribution will definitely be better. It's almost like someone over there said "we lost DKM to the majors, we need the band with their original singer to pick up where they left off!"
Also, their list of influences makes the kids say "uh-oh".
I'm doing this project for some work i have to do for college and was just wondering if anyone could tell me some stories about their boss and why they suck etc. Any help would be mega appreciated
My current boss is awesome. But at the pizza place I worked in high school (around 96-97), my boss gave me shit for wanting to take off work for graduation and my open house. He said I needed to "take my job seriously". What a fucking loser. Like I'm going to skip graduation and my own open house to work at a pizza place. I guess that's the difference between me and him and also why he's 40-something and still in a job that high school students do.
Haha, I remember a similar story with my friend when we were 16 and working at Wendy's.
The boss was trying to get him to pick up some extra hours and was like "come on I'm here like 6 days a week" and my friend just looked at him and said "yeah, but I have aspirations!!" and walked away.
Fading American Dream was a good album w/ some amazing songs, but Back to the World is so fucking solid. There's not a single track on it that I ever skip. I'm going to listen to that this morning after seeing this. Wish I had Savin Hill.
Although they draw the obvious comparisons to Dropkick, and do have a sort of "Do or Die Part 2" thing as the cliche goes, I also get a fun Bouncing Soulsish feeling with Street Dogs.
"U2, AC/DC, Thin Lizzy, The Ramones, TV On The Radio, Stiff Little Fingers, Bloc Party, Michael Franti and The Clancy Brothers" oh my bottom. Those are some zany influences...
Couldn't care less what label these guys are on, I will be buying the next album!
Definitely one of my favorite current bands playing straight up punk rock. And damn they do it well. Love seeing these guys live too, you can just tell they're genuinely happy to be doing what they are doing.
i am actually surprised this band signed to hellcat..hellcat, as of late, seems more like a home for streetpunk/ rancid-sounding bands...but its still a better label than epitaph itself..anyways, hopefully this move works well for the band, and gets them better distribution for their older material, and keeps them going for years to come. savin hill, back to the world and fading american dream were all killer and let's hope these boys never slow down.
Glad to see the label look better. So who's the best on the label now? Street Dogs, Westbound Train, the Aggrolites, the Slackers (I think they're still on there), Left Alone.... and I guess I could say HorrorPops. Rancid....well, that depends on what their next album will sound like.
I guess The Hellcat/Epitaph crew had to find someway to replace Dropkick Murphy's.
Speaking of, anyone think it's odd that they didn't sign until after Dropkick's was off of Epitaph/Hellcat? I mean, Street Dogs didn't have anything to prove after their first album and it's not like they've become more and more popular since then. They've done well but it's not like they couldn't get label attention before now.

They've grown in the Bay Area a little bit and I know what you're saying. I just think it's odd because I know it's not like they were below Hellcat's radar before now. Tim was like "The what dogs? They have who? From Dropkick Murphy's? You don't say...Never heard of them before". I can see waiting for a second album to see if they had the Sophomore Slump but it's seems odd to wait this long.

They probably thought it'd be a bit weird to have the old singer's new band as well as DKM. And, they were in a deal with DRT for records two and three so it just makes sense now
I'm glad they don't sound like their influences. I'm glad they don't suck like their influences.
