Scarlett Johansson's Tom Waits cover album takes shape with title, Bowie guest appearance

Scarlett Johansson has outlined more details of her upcoming Tom Waits-cover-dominated album. The album, Anywhere I Lay My Head was produced by Dave Sitek of TV On The Radio and features vocal work from David Bowie on tracks like "Fannin' Street" and "Falling Down." Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner and members of the band Celebration serve as the backing band on most tracks, including the one original composition "Song For Jo."

Apparently Mr. Waits has signed off on the affair having said "Go ahead," after Johansson sent him some early recordings. Expect the album on May 20th.

Cleanly produced? Tom Waits records his records in run-down barns, with trash can lids and chewing tobacco. She needs to stick an iv of whiskey and cigar smoke into her eyeballs and record it onto a phonograph machine on a pirate ship.

If it was, say, Hilary Duff instead of Scarlett Johnasson, I might think this was a premature April Fool's gag. It's too silly to be for real, but why would anyone joke about this?

I am interested to hear this stuff though. I wouldn't mind a Jeff Rosenstock Tom Waits cover album though...

Tom Waits has pretty strict personal rules and regulations regarding the use of his music. If he gave the go-ahead, I think this might be good.

Scarlett Johansson = mega hot, classicly beautiful, talented actress (i know i know, two of those traits are relegated to her looks....but c'mon....she IS hot....don't deny it)
Tom Waits = amazing artist who does things his way, and has been making music for nearly 40 years.
Sounds like a great combo to me.

People that critize this are lame. Out of all the people she's covering, she picked Tom Waits. That's badass.

Side note: A Canadian artist named Holly Cole also did some versions of his songs in the 90's that were pretty cool. Tom Waits fans who want to hear a female interpretation should check it out.

That's what I was thinking. She could have pulled a Lindsay Lohan, or Hillary Duff, or Paris Hlton, and released an album of generic pop songs with disgusting amounts of studio gloss and sold a lot more records than this will sell.

Even if this album falls flat on it's face, she's trying to break that awful actress-turned-singer mold. She's already a better actress than the aforementioned by far, I bet she's a better singer, too.

Seems like I'm one of only people here who is actually excited about this. Tom Waits has many great songs and I'm interested in hearing how some of them sound with a more traditional vocalist.

I haven't seen many of Scarlett Johansson's movies, but has never stricken me as having any exceptional talent. "The Prestige" immediately comes to mind. What an awful fake accent.

I don't know, maybe I have to see some of her more acclaimed roles.

I was one of those two people. Bill Murray was funny, Scarlett Johansson was hot, and the b-roll photography/cultural discrepancies made is interesting.

The love story was a failure. Still, it didn't drag the movie down terribly.

I have seen her movies and they are whatever. She is hot as hell. She seems like she's pretty fucking cool. JAMC and now Tom Waits thats pretty fucking cool. If the album sucks, it sucks it's whatever but there is a chnace of it being good considering how Tom Waits doesn't have one bad song and a whole fucking lot to choose from.
