According to a Reuters report, Apple's iTunes Music Store is now the second largest music retailer in the United States. The statistic is particularly notable since the retailer category includes both physical and digital media, with only Walmart's physical CDs coming ahead of iTunes.
Based on 2007 sales, legal music downloads now account for 10 percent of music acquired in the United States, but the increase failed to offset a decline in physical CD sales. The amount of music purchased by consumers rose 6 percent from a surge in digital music sales. But actual spending rates across the industry declined by 10 percent due to lackluster CD sales, dropping from about $44 per capita to $40 among Internet users. The iTunes Store now has more than 50 million customers and has sold a total of 4 billion songs. Games and Technology (96 comments)

Oh what's that you say? CD's are in fact still selling? Because that's what I got out of that article. You know what this means right? Simply put, labels and bands need to lower CD prices. You can sell a CD for $8 (roughly wal marts price, sometimes cheaper) and still make like $5-$7 profit. It's that simple. More will buy physical merch for cheaper prices, or less will buy it for higher prices. Take your pick, but I think you will find that you gain more appreciation from keeping fair prices. You don't have to break yourself by getting 1000 CD's made. There are other very affordable options. Comments or feedback? I run a label so I would like to hear anything you have to say. 14+ Replies

That's fucking insane. I don't dislike iTunes but I don't recall the last thing I bought from them (though I did get a $25 iTunes gift card for my birthday, so that's about to change).

Don't bother clicking the link to the Reuters story, the entire article has been paraphrased here. Isn't there something a bit degrading journalistically by paraphrasing an entire article? Granted, it's a short Reuters story, so that might get you off the hook. 2+ Replies

I think in the end, whether you go to Wal-Mart or I tunes, you are supporting the same sick fucks. Take your pick I guess, or go directly to the band or label. 7+ Replies

I don't use it often, but the store has an awesome catalog of stuff to buy. Last week actually used it to buy an older patton oswalt cd and a ride album. 1+ Reply

Now imagine if iTunes actually priced their product properly how much of the market they would own.... | Features
