Sid Vicious, Ian Curtis, Billie Joe Armstrong to pitch Converse in new campaign

According to reports, legendary shoemaker (and now Nike imprint) Converse is planning a major ad campaign to celebrate their 100th anniversary. The company was formed in 1908.

The report notes that living musicians M.I.A., Common, Karen O., Joan Jett, and Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong will be participating. Of some note is that the campaign will also include Ian Curtis (of Joy Division), Sid Vicious, James Dean, Hunter S. Thompson. Hopefully Converse will not repeat the mistakes of a certain boot company and actually ask first. Of course, Nike probably learned their lesson.

The No Sweat version is awesome. Its better quality too and is the only 100% all Union made show, the Blackspots are pretty sweet too, but the No Sweats are better I think because they are pretty much exactly like Chucks. For someone who is supposed to be so political and socially aware I find it funny that Billie Joe Armstrong is in these ads. Up the punx kids.

Don't you think though it makes sense to put human beings before profit? Why can't a company make profit and at the same time be held accountable and have good human rights practices? The No Sweat chucks are built pretty much the same way the old American made Converse were. In fact, they fit and fall apart the same way the American made ones used to. I've owned about four pairs (I've been buying them for two years and go through two pairs a year) and they've come apart the exact same way all four times.
I wish they made a high top version of the standard black, because the low tops, although nice aren't 100% my thing.

i hate that nike is a hip brand in punk and skateboarding now. totally hate it. even worse that they bought out converse. nike went from being completely shunned by everyone when i started going to shows like 10 years ago to being the company making the shoes that like 70% of the kids at shows are wearing (when converse is included)

vans got bought out by VF last year, i'm not sure what their labor practices are but i do know that they make bras and whatnot and they closed a few of the factories in my hometown maybe 4-5 years ago and moved the jobs overseas somewhere...

i wish i could feel okay about buying ANYTHING anymore.

Wal-Mart punx will be thrilled! I have to work in a fucking Wal-Mart for 2 hours every Sunday delivering and as I was walking to the back of the store, I noticed this HUGE display for Converse one-stars. Made me really bummed. One-star jeans, t-shirts and shoes of course....ugh.

in the 1850's, america had sweatshops everywhere, and immigrants still flocked to the big cities. what else were they gonna do? noone wanted to resort to prostitution or drug dealing, or even working at a farm. they wanted money, and where there are opportunities, especially at a time and place where there are no other options, people are going to go there and work as much as they possibly can, despite conditions. please leave these countries alone and let them go through their own industrial revolution.

Of course i read what you said - didn't i paraphrase you throughout? I don't think you actually read my post, because you are still attempting to argue that without sweatshops there would be no jobs. I see that there is a strange logic to your argument, but it is a misled logic with no grounds.

You're argument has a bigger hole in it than the titanic. Let me point out a few fallacies in the things you have said.

- This bizarre assumption attempts to justify the exploitation, oppression and suffering of millions of impoverished workers through a strange equation that concludes that without sweatshops there would be no work at all. This is simply tripe. The solution to sweatshops does not result in a loss of jobs, it results in union friendly factories where workers have rights and earn a DECENT living wage in return for their labour. What we are talking about here is FAIR economics, not the hyper-capitalist kind of economics that you seem so intent on defending (albeit with a terrible argument).
Also, if 'no sweatshops' leads to 'no jobs', which in turn leads to 'poor economy', can you explain to me how the economies of Britain, America, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Finland, Russia etc etc etc manage to maintain such strength?

- Wait a minute... Did you actually say that? Do you actually believe that? That statement i feel, speaks for itself.

If you cannot make the connection between wage slavery and sweatshops (and your own definition of both), then you are quite simply a lost cause. But honestly, it doesn't suprise me. So many people are ignorant about issues like this because in reality they have no idea about economics, they have no clue about the problems created by corporate globalization and nor do they care. Most people, it seems to me, like to pretent 'it's just the way it is' and get on with their own lives. It's especially not suprising coming from someone like you who i presume is a child of the Reagan generation. The striking lack of compassion for the fellow man/woman present in your 'argument' makes me feel physically sick to a point.

I'd love it if you went and read Robert Ross' 'Slaves To Fashion'. Honestly dude - and i don't mean to condescend - you really need to update your perspective.

Actually, most companies do have guidelines, but they are not enforced. The main companies outsource their production to foreign companies who do not care about workers rights. These foreign production companies are extremely competitive and will do anything to save a dollar. You may want to take an international business class to learn more about these type of practices. I am in a class right now (which I hate) that digs deep into this shit.

He claims a social conscience through campaigning against the genocide in darfur, supporting 'enviromental' campaigns, and more recently his work helping rebuild houses for the impoverished in new-orleans. So why then help promote the product of a notoriously unethical, union bashing multinational corporation like Nike for the sole purpose of... err... profit?!

As someone who has spent time in the factories in China, I can tell you that a whole shitload of supposed brands that are ethical are being pumped out of there. In factories that make Nike look amazing in comparison too. There are a few tricks to have stuff not even branded as made in china.

Not quite. They are offering them jobs at lousy pay because there are no other options, but that doesn't make it okay. With the sweatshops comes commercialization and the need for money that the sweatshops aren't willing to supply.

I don't think of myself as that much of a "rar rar i'mma boycot this shit" type of person, but there are two brands I will always refuse to support. Wal-mart and Nike. The first pair of Converse I bought, roughly 7 or 8 years ago still fit me and, while beat, still are wearable. The last pair I bought, like 5 years ago (i think after Nike took over) died in less than 9 months.
