They seem pretty unsatisfied with rev. To quote their MySpace, "DISCONNECTING CD $10: this is our full length on revelation records. buy it from us though, they charge too much and we will never see a dime of it."

Maybe rev wasn't paying out... I would pin them for a Victory though.

I'm sure they got a decent size advance from Rev (more than they were worth). Rev took out ads, etc. All that shit is held against a band. That's how labels stay in business; they have to charge bands back for the expenses. Sinking Ships would never sell enough records to pay back what Rev spent, so no, they'd never see a dime from it. The problem isn't with labels, it's with bands that don't know what they're doing nor talking about.

maybe none in the last five years but previously rev was notorious for not paying bands . im not sure what they are advancing these days though or what you would call "decent" but i would assume they havent been forking over tons of money.

sadly, a lot of bands who don't know what they're doing/talking about are doing a helluva lot better than bands who know what their message is. see pretty much every "deathcore" band in existence right now.

i don't know exactly what you meant by sinking ships getting "more money than they were worth," but fuck. they were worth way more than 10 dumbass flash-in-the-pan sideways haircut fashioncore bands.

From a business standpoint, you couldn't have expected them to have sold more than 10,000 copies. I'm sure Rev spent more on them then they should have. I'd guess they probably sold less than 5000

As stated here before, been in some bands, filled in for some others, worked at a label at one point, have since left the "music biz." I have an idea as to how well bands sell.

Rev's been going down hill, in my opinion.

It's been an awful label for 10 years. That dude Bob Shed who ran the label for a while in the past couple of years made it seem "cooler" because he signed some flash in the pan hardcore bands, who didn't sell any records, anyway.

IIRC Shook ones weren't all that pleased with Rev, either.

That's a great point. I'm going to take shit for this, but I think a lot of it is the "vibe" in the "scene", and just maturity, esp musically. Right now, hardcore bands have about 2 years of "cool" factor and people stop caring. If you sign to a bigger label before that, people start hating, bad. In those cases, Seems there's always some conflict within the bands between the guys that want to "keep it core" and the guys that want to try to make their bands more of a living. Then, you've got guys who are just sick of playing the same riffs over and over again, and want to move on.

the end. i'm sick of bands talking about how they need to make a living off their music. if you need money, get a job. driving around the country in a van listening to people jack you off about your throwback music every night may not be comfortable 100 percent of the time, but it sure as shit isn't work.

Yeah, the scene tends to chew up bands and spit them out unless they are extremely tough. But there are some bands that have stood around. Case in point: Sick of It All.

Well, I would contend that there are other bands that aren't Lower East Side-ish bands. Converge, Fugazi, 7 Seconds, Melt Banana, what have you. I didn't mean tough in the ways of "tough guy". Really more just unwilling to stop making music despite trends and fads.

7 Seconds have broken up a bunch of times. Fugazi definitely not a hardcore band and were an exception to most rules based on their pedigree. Converge are a great example of a band who's stuck with it and grown. They're still doing it because they've made fans through their evolution.

Also, from what I can deduce, there's not a whole ton of money in hardcore. I know it's never about the money in the first place, but you've gotta have a place to sleep and food to eat.

Exactly. That's part of what I was saying. Some dudes in the band get to the point where they're like "hey, I'd like to be able to pay my rent when I get home." Some dudes in the band feel bad that they've "betrayed hardcore" and want to make the vinyl trading nerds on the B9er happy.

It' tough to try to juggle family, a full-time job, and trying to be in a band. It takes a lot of sacrifice because most HC bands are not financially equipped to make a long run at it.
