Mastodon set to record with Brendan O'Brien

Mastodon will be recording their second major label album with producer Brendan O'Brien. O'Brien has produced albums from Korn, Bruce Springsteen, Audioslave, The Offspring, Wire and many others. The record marks the band's first album without longtime producer, Matt Bayles, who record all their material up to 2006's major label debut, Blood Mountain.

The record is expected in the fall.

Eh, good for them. I can't say too much as I never listened to "Blood Mountain" but the production on a lot of their older stuff seemed quite muddled. But that's my untrained opinion.

Blood Mountain is worth a listen I guess but Im just not on the Mastodon train. Great musicians and this and that but as Jules says in Pulp Fiction, sewer rat may taste like pumpkin pie but I wouldn't know cause I wouldn't eat the filthy muthafucka.

Bayles is thee man. Listen to Remission, Leviathan, and Call of the Mastodon, and that is the best work they have done. Blood Mountain is meh to the fullest extent of meh.

But Mastodon rocks and I am stoked.

Its a good album. Leviathan is my personal favorite. But they all have pretty shitty studio sound. Matt Bayles is NOT Thee man. Well, he sucks at recording/mixing, unless you're Minus The Bear. But he is good at working with the band to lay down some tight tracks. The producer and the engineer are supposed to be different dudes anyway.

Duuude come on, this is Mastodon. I love both bands, and I love everything Bayles has put out by them. Mastodon sounds like that for a reason. They shouldn't sound glazed and over produced. That sound is what makes me like them. When Bayles works with Minus, it's all digital insanity. Which is cool for them, but not the don.

Nothing against Mastodon but, at first glance, I read... "The record is expected to fail."

Matt Bayles is a GOOD producer for Mastodon (despite being a terrible studio engineer). They should have Matt produce the music, and engineer at The Plant or something.

Warner must be forcing them to go with O'Brien. Some of the older Korn albums don't have bad studio sound -- the music is just unfathomably awful.

Do you know anything about OBrien? First off, he didn't do the older Korn records. Second, he's a killer engineer and makes total sense. He's a total student of Rick Rubin.

The problem I have with this band is the drums. The dude is obviously talented but every song is like one big solo. It's distracting as hell.

how is he setting time aside to record mastodon in between the new ac/dc and pearl jam albums? i dont think its a bad choice of producer though, he did the rage against the machine albums which were all sweet. so what if hes produced a bunch of crap too? hes got to get his bread and butter some how. if they want a commercially successful album i think they found a good man for the job of producer.

Finally a fellow fan, it me a while to get into them but once I did - bam! They kick some major ass.

As for Brann Dailor (the drummer) it seems like a bit much at first but really, he is so damn good and once you just accept that it's just how he plays you can accept him for his godliness

Probably the only "mainstream" metal band I'm into. While I do agree that they're a bit overrated I think they're pretty solid at what they do. I'll pick the new CD up day one.

I love Mastodon. As long as they don't end up covering 'Blind' or "Pretty Fly..." it's all good.

I read an interview a while ago saying that this album was going to be the heaviest to date. I always take a band's comments on their current material with a fist of salt, but it's interesting to consider nonetheless.
