Punks in the masons

Boing Boing has shone the spotlight on a recent Boston Herald expose on punks in the Freemasons. That city's Masonic lodges have seen increasing enrollment from the independent music community. In the article members of local punk, hardcore and metal acts are interviewed, with statements from the ranks of Sam Black Church, The Men, Victory At Sea, Dashboard Jesus and a former Slapshot roadie. The musicians discuss why they've found solace in the fraternal organization, the traditional values and structure of which would seem to be an ill fit for punk rockers.

You can apply to become a member under two conditions, you have to be male and you have to believe in a higher power. After a whole interview process, the masons choose who can be in their lodge. It helps if you are good friends with a member or are the son of member.

Strange. My buddy and I just heard that there was a freemason place down the road and we were thinking of joining. Sounds rad. I like the whole faternity thing. I did go to a uni that had no sports so the frats were actually just punk kids that wanted to drink with friends when I joined. Turned really fratboyish at the end so I burned my letters and bailed.

Freemasons probably have some rad job hookups and shit. Plus it would be rad to wear a big ol' hat like Fred Flintsone at the Stonecutters or whatever he was in.

I'm tight with freemasons. Really, they have no real answers rather an exclusivism about them, like small town paranoia on a larger scale. Most anything you want to know about them can be found on Wikipedia, including things that are suppose to be 'secrets'.

this is pretty interesting.

i've been becoming increasingly interested in the masons over the past couple of years and maybe even join up one of these days.

my grandfather was a 33 degree mason. i have his 32nd degree sword, which he willed to me. its pretty awesome, with a skull and bones on it, and the handle is, i believe, ivory. its really old.

my grandfather was heavily into the old-man frats (shriners, kiwanis, and masons) and he was a real awesome dude. one of the best people ive ever met. they must be doing something right in those places. he was a former alcoholic and devout (but by no means idiotic) christian. it always seemed like the weird secret clubs helped him out.

and now here i am across the river from the masonic capital. i'll explore it further one of these days.
