Drum Magazine names Travis Barker, Tre Cool, Brooks Wackerman, Bill Stevenson as "Best Punk Drummers

Drum Magazine unveiled their reader-voted list of the best punk rock drummers working today. The readers of the magazine named the following as the best four drummers: Travis Barker of Blink-182 and Plus-44, Tré Cool of Green Day and Foxboro Hot Tubs, Brooks Wackerman of Bad Religion and Bill Stevenson of Black Flag, Lemonheads, Only Crime and more.

Barker also placed in Best Mainstream Pop Drummer, Best Alternative Rock Drummer. Atom Willard of Rocket From the Crypt, Angels and Airwaves and The Offspring also earned a nod in "Best Alternative Rock Drummer."

definitely! there's moments on the first coupla HWM albums where it sounds he's unleashing a short blast of double bass drumming, but i'm almost certain he only uses one bass pedal...

I know from experience that playing drums live and making up stuff is easy enough, but what is 1000X harder is when you have to sit down and do it in the studio to a click track. It gives you a whole different perspective to what you hear someone do on an album. Also, keep in mind that technical skills and being able to do a kick ass solo doesn't make up for not being innovative with drumming in the actual songwriting process. With that being said:

Travis Barker is amazing. Overexposed, yes, but amazing. Deal with it. George Robello= good, but you guys give him the benefit of the doubt because he is in HWM. He's pretty innovative on some of their stuff, but I would not put him in a top 10 list.

Dave Wagenshultz, now he is a top 10 punk drummer. Jordan Burns too, although Strung Out has gotten kind of too metal lately. Their first fe

I was driving home one weekend, and decided that the drumming on From Here To Infirmary is amazing. Mike Felumlee owns on that record.

Derek Grant = Amazing drummer.

watch him play live and you'll see. He does a ton of shit on record that you really don't notice too much unless you play drums, but makes the overall sound awesome. seriously check him out live, he's insane.

They don't mention Bill for ruling it in Descendents for nearly 2 decades?!

Thomas Pridgen is a machine, but any drummer will tell you that one of the most important things a drummer can do is just sit back and play a simple groove. A lot of dummers can't do that, and will actually "overdrum." I know MV's music is more high intensity stuff with soft breakdowns here and there, but everything I have seen Thomas Pridgen do has been insane. I am curious as to how he actually breaks it down.

Totally agree about Tre Cool. I'll always have a huge soft spot for Green Day, and like the album or not, his drumming on American Idiot is damn impressive.

I'd like to point out three things:

1.) I'm not a fan of the Vandals, but having any kind of punk rock drumming accolade anywhere...I think it's a goddamned insult not to list Josh Freese.

2.) Neil Hennesy and Derek Grant were fucking robbed.

3.) This...magazine, or whatever the fuck it is...could it please get off of Travis Barkers nut sack? I've heard enough about his god damned drumming to last a fucking life time. My all-time fave is Byron McMackin from Pennywise, followed by Smelly from NOFX, Derrick Plourde from early Lagwagon, Rodrigo from the Satanic Surfers and Jordan Burns from Strung Out in no particular order. Obviously the losers that write for this mgazine don't know hardly any indy punk bands. Green Day, Blink 182, Plus 44, Puhhhlease!

brooks wackerman brought new life to bad religion. especially since i hated bobby schayer. bobby schayer = boring as shit dummer. brooks is a fun and animated drummer, but i'm not familiar enough with his drumming to say that he is anything special. he's solid and gets the job done.

bill stevenson is awesome. grew up listening to decendents. never thought twice about them musically. just wanted to listen to them while i skated. it wasn't until after high school that i realized that they are actually good musicians too. bill stevenson rules all around.

drummers that should be getting some recognition:

derek grant from alk3...technically solid and dynamic. is very musical about his playing. doesn't just pound. can execute fills and little things very well.

nick dewitt from pretty girls make graves...i love everything he does. one of my top favorites. i cannot believe he never gets mentioned for anything. he rips. furthest from being a boring drummer.

jason mcgerr from death cab for cutie...he's just simple, but every now and then he does little things and they are awesome. totally love his style.

dave turncrantz from russian circles...shit is good. nuff said.

mike marsh from dashboard confessional...all jokes aside about the band, he's a really good drummer. effortless and big sounding.

I agree about Tre. That guy changed the way I thought about and the way I approached playing drums when I saw him play in the Basket Case video. Still love the guy, he's still so solid, but not innovating, when the rest of the band is.

I know everybody's saying Derrick Plourde of early Lagwagon, but his replacement, Dave Raun is just as solid. Later Lagwagon has awesome drumming and has anyone heard Rich Kids On LSD - Riches To Rags? That album is pure genius in every way.

Other notables for me would be Josh Freese and Jordan Burns. Nobody else really wows me.

Why on earth have I not heard George Robello from HWM's name brought up yet. Ask any of the guys on that list and they would tell you why he should be there, or you could just listen to him.

Jordan Burns is MUCH better than Travis Barker. I mean, come on, listen to a Blink record and then listen to Strung Out's "Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues". Blink doesn't even hold a candle in the drumming department.

Also, no disrespect, but Brooks is a professional session/studio drummer. He's a great drummer, in general. But best punk drummer? Um, no, I guess his work with Avril Levigne was pretty punk... And Josh Freese is better than Brooks in the session/studio drummer role anyways.

How about Dave Grohl's work as a power hitter with finesse in Scream,The rawwer Nirvana stuff(Territorial Pissings!! Good Stuff! C'mon) and that record he drummed for Killing Joke was sweet!

Hmmm I really like Riley he's a tight and solid drummer, but that said he's nothing to write home about, he keeps it all fairly simple which works for the music but doesn't excite for drum polls : P

Watch the Vandals "Show Must Go Off" DVD. Josh Freese is amazing. Ta boot he plays a song one handed while smoking a cigarette. One Man Orgy rocked my socks off too. Caffeine and Vaseline!
