Megan Jasper of Sub Pop looks back at the label's notable releases

In this week's Bigger Than the Sound, writer James Montgomery spoke with Megan Jasper of Sub Pop. The feature coincides with the notable indie label's 20th anniversary, and Jasper as both the label's first receptionist and current Executive Vice President, looked back on some of the label's formative and notable releases.

The article looks back at Soundgarden's debut EP, Screaming Life, Mudhoney's Superfuzz Bigmuff, Nirvana's Bleach, Mark Lanegan, Thee Headcoats, The Vaselines, Sebadoh, Sunny Day Real Estate, Murder City Devils, and many more.

Yeah, I'm sure many people here would, my point was how obvious it was that a Nirvana album would be hidden in the list. It'd be like an Epitaph retrospective giving Smash an 'honorable mention', c'mon you're not fooling anyone.

Nirvana and Mudhoney still rule.

Other releases I think were rad:
Seaweed "Weak" "Four": melodic postpunk rock. I love these guys.
Velocity Girl "Simpatico": female fronted indie rock. One of my fav. albums.
Sleater Kinney "The Woods": their heaviest, most feedback drenched album.

Good bands: Postal Service, Dwarves, Fastbacks, Chixdiggit, The Wipers, Godheadsilo, David Cross, Low, Earth, Rev. Horton Heat, Helio Sequence.

The Makers put out their worst and most boring records on Sub Pop. Their 1994 album "All Night Riot" (estrus records) was 60's rock and roll goodness.

Sub Pop always introduced great bands to the world on their singles series. Two that come to mind are Fugazi and The Rye Coalition.

Fuck Subpop. Not only would they not allow for Chixdiggit to have the rights back for their first album, but it went out of print and they wouldn't reprint it.
