This is going to come as a shock to many of you. After much prayer and thought given to the matter, we asked Jason Barnes to step down from his involvement with Haste the Day. For a while Jason has been searching and searching for real meaning in his existence. After several months of reading literature and talking with friends, Jason had determined that he felt there was no God and certainly no Jesus. We as a band do not have problem with those that do not believe in Jesus, nor do we cast judgement on those that do not believe in Jesus. We just want to love on people like Jesus would and hopefully share a little bit about what he's done and doing in our lives. We would call ourselves a Christian band and for that reason, we felt we couldn't have someone in the band who didn't agree with the band's foundational drive.. Jason's new found disbelief in what the rest of us have committed our lives to began to cause disunity within the band and as a result, we prayed and talked about it and felt like God was saying it wasn't time for Haste the Day to come to an end. Thusly, We asked Jason to leave.Haste The Day released Pressure the Hinges in 2007 via Solid State Records.
We love Jason and it pains us all to not be on the road with one of our closest friends. It has also been a miserable experience for Jason to not be a part of something that he has been a part of for so long. We are all working on mending the tear in our relationship with Jason and are hoping to be able to continue to call him friend. We will not be replacing Jason with a new guitar player. Our friend, Dave Krysl, will be our full time touring guitar player. The 4 of us (Stephen, Devin, Brennan, Michael) all wrote our new album which will be called "Dreamer."

Indianapolis based Christian metalcore act Haste The Day has kicked guitarist Jason Barnes out of the band. The guitarist had been with the group since 2001. The band posted the following statement citing Barnes' lack of faith as the reason for his departure:

At least both parties are actually standing by their convictions. Unfortunately, not a lot of Christians or Christian bands do.

good for Jason, that must have been hard considering some of your best friends sound like soldiers for jesus types. As someone who is a semi-closet atheist it makes me proudto see someone coming out who is in a difficult position like that.

Everyone, don't read any literature or talk to people with other viewpoints than your own. You might just change your mind and lose your friends! You've been warned. 2+ Replies

Seriously though, good for the guy for questioning his believes, and good for the band for making an effort to repair/maintain their relationship. It doesn't really make sense for an atheist to be in a Christian band, so I don't have any problem with the band asking him to leave. 3+ Replies

is anyone else here a closet atheist (not that you are an atheist who is secretly homosexual but one that has to hide their beliefs from family or friends or shit even coworkers) if so why are you? 11+ Replies

Yeah, when you read that Mary is a "virgin", but yet gives birth to "Jesus", it kind of starts to fall apart from there, really. 4+ Replies

I would probably consider myself agnostic, maybe even atheist. I don't really have a problem with people having faith and what not, but what I just read was almost uncomfortable. It was too understanding, yet critical of the guy that doesn't believe in Jesus, in a subtle kind of way. I don't know. 2+ Replies

There used to be this group of metal/emo looking kids that would come into my coffee shop everyday. They would pray before eating a muffin and all that shit. They were a "recuitment" group for some youth church. 3+ Replies

For what it's worth. I'm a Christian and feel like these guys messed up. I don't understand people who will stop associating with people just because their beliefs are different/change. Besides, if the dude is a atheist and in a band where all the songs are about jesus, doesn't it stand to reason that he'd leave on his own anyway. Might as well let him make his own decisions. 1+ Reply

Didn't anyone learn from the PMRC in the 80's that moshing for Jesus is fundamentally retarded? These were the guys who wanted to destroy all the sects of music now being occupied by preachy fucks like HTD, underoath, and Norma Jean. But then again all of those bands suck ass so w/e... 1+ Reply

Okay, here's what I think about this; Christians in bands can be very cool, especially punk bands. I've talked to some Christian kids in a punk band and they were totally for gay marriage and pro-choice, so they were cool dudes. So firstly, don't get me wrong, I don't hate Christians. I'm straightedge and vegetarian, and the bass player in my band is a Christian (but like the afore-mentioned... not conservative) , and the drummer is a lush and smokes like a chimney. And we get along totally fine and have a kickass time at every show. It's not that hard to get along with people completely different than you. It's easy to see the bullshit in Christian bands who are clearly only playing for a selective audience. There are a lot of smart kids raised as conservative Christians (like me) who eventually brought their "faith" into the light and questio show rest of comment 2+ Replies

My mom has a big mouth and 'outed' me to my grandparents, so now I don't really feel the need to hide it from anyone. But yeah, before that, I definitely kept my atheism quiet a family functions and around grandparents.

I gotta be honest with you folks: it really bothers me when people just say Jesus and christianity are like the mayor damage ever to human existance; which is not. I will begin with the "logical" reason of Jason getting out of HTD: the WHOLE concept of the band is to promote christianity; they have always been open about it. Just making music is not the purpose of HTD. If you where part of a knicks fan group, but then you realize you like more the lakers and in every game you will sport the kobe bryant t-shirt, why would you remain in the fan group? If Jason, because of his own decision, decided that he would not stand anymore for the main driving believes of the band then why he must show up and support what he doesn't like/care/believe? Just to please you, "the fans"? come on, he is a musician not a pop icon. Now, the "other" show rest of comment 2+ Replies
