I agree, I think gaslight is a great band, but I've always been surprised at the punknews worship as they've always struck me as a rock n' roll band. That being said, I also like a lot of gin blossoms tunes.

Good ear! Being so, why do people brown nose them? Accessibility isn't punk.

I like the Gin Blossoms. London Calling is pretty much a pop rock record and yet I'm sure no one here would say it doesn't belong on this site.

I strongly disagree with London Calling being monumental to punk rock per se, other than punk kids liking that album. I am not saying its a bad album, I am not being a hater. Plenty of non-punk music is great and influential in its own rite, including some pop-rock. Does it belong on this site? Sure, why not, cause punk fans like it (and Joe Strummer was kind of a punk rock dude, even if the producers tamed the sound). Just as I think this site should feature more hardcore, and some metal. The news in general is pretty one dimensional with the punk styles featured.

This comment was done in good intentions, I can tell, but the logic is something I can't understand one fucking bit. London Calling was more a punk album than anything done in the last 5 years; it was that far out of left field when it came out. And last time I checked, even though the site that you are commenting on is PUNKnews.org, I'd say the editors do a pretty decent job in getting the news out there from other genres of music other than the one mentioned in its name.

GIn Blossoms were fantastic. One of the reasons I liked Gaslight so much when I first heard Sink or Swim was because they reminded me of early 90s alt-rock.

yeah if you listen to any rock recorded in the 50s/early 60s is bound to have reverb on the vocals. i think it sounds great with what they're going for

I don't know, all the stations around me are about 2-3 years behind the curve, so they're still playing screamo.

Either case, having a mainstream sound doesn't necessarily make it bad. For example, most people here like Foo Fighters.

Saw someone post on another board that they already heard this on the radio, so it looks like you're right. I'm not surprised whatsoever.

I honestly have expected this band to blow up from the first time I heard Sink or Swim. They have an accessible sound, but in my opinion they ace the sound. I absolutely love it.

They put on a killer live show, they are nice guys and I imagine they have pretty good hygiene.

You sure worry about "credibility" and "authenticity" a lot. I thought you were too old for that crap (about my age, right? 24).

As for the band, this song isn't the best off the new album, but it's polished. What I like about this band is that they have successfully (to me) combined punk and rock aesthetics in their music which is hard to do without a lot of resistance. Just ask Against Me!

but i know that this website places a big emphasis on that kind of stuff, so it is odd when a more radio-friendly album gets stellar reviews on here

agree completely, i didn't hate the video but it didn't do anything for me
and I think i've listened to the record enough times where the reverb doesn't bother me anymore, really wish they did some songs without it though.

so far I think i'm more into the LaGrecia album and Off With Their Heads and Bridge and Tunnel are putting out amazing releases this year.
also check out the new landmines full length, think it just came out

Do you really see that much of a similarity between the 2 songs? Because... I just don't. The only similarity is that they are both increddddible songs!

haha I could see where you're coming from though... both great, upbeat, soulful pop songs played by punk bands... I was just curious to see if you saw that much of a similarity between them. I wasn't trying to be a dick!

i've not heard alex chilton yet, but judging by the (fairly large) amount of other replacements songs i've heard, i can definitely hear their influence. might pick this up, but not before i've gotten all the replacements reissues.

I can enjoy a lot of middle of the road things. I don't love them, but they are all right.
Everything is say, mediocre compared to Dethklok (not true, but using as an example). But I can't listen to my most favorite bands over and over and over again without getting bored of it for a short while. Sometimes I am not in a very extreme mood and am not really in a mood for a specific sound. In those times is when I rock something like Gaslight Anthem, The Loved Ones, Alkaline Trio, etc.
Sometimes when I am skating, all I want to hear is Slayer or Pennywise. And when I hit the gym, I want to listen to Pantera or Terror. When I am partying, I like anywhere from Misfits to Municipal Waste. I like making love to something sleazy like Danzig or Turbonegro. It all depends on the mood really.

Otherwise, I kinda agree with the rest of what you said. Except I feel that as far as emotion goes with the Gaslight Anthem, I really feel you'd be hard-pressed to find someone not on Motown Records with that much soul.

Pretty much. It's got some solid songs but for the most part it's missing the huge choruses that put the last one over the top. I've got the same complaint about the ep.

I like it. The production works for the songs. It's hard to say whether it would have the same impact that Sink or Swim did if this were the first album of theirs I'd heard.

The only thing I really specifically don't like is the prevalence of that one clean, reverb-heavy guitar tone. They used it once on Señor and the Queen ("Blue Jeans & White T-Shirts"), and several times on this album, probably most noticeably in the chorus of "Casanova, Baby!" It's mixed too loud for how clean it sounds and just gives the whole thing a very "studio album" feel. Maybe it's just me. Shrug.

I'm on board with the "not as good as Sink or Swim" crowd but the echo/production values don't bother me as much as how the songs all sound very similar, there's bugger all change of pace or energy. I would say this is an "earnest" album where sink or swim felt more "passionate". But I dunno really, just know that I didn't lose my shit the first time I heard this like I did with the earlier stuff. I'm reserving judgement though til I hear these songs live next week.

I actually really like it myself. At first the echo was a little weird to listen to, but after a while I got used to it. It's no Sink or Swim, but personally I think that's a good thing. Even though they've started going in a little bit of a different direction (emphasis on a little bit) I think it's just as good. While Sink or Swim had that really fast and harder sound, this one is just slower and with less distortion. The songwriting is just as good, and the music is just as catchy.

I liken it to Against Me!'s Eternal Cowboy album. While you can still hear some of the last album on it, it's still a different album with a different sound. Selloutz.
