The situation with the The Libertarian Party is a lot like the Green Party for liberals, it crams too many people together. The Libertarian Party generally nominates VERY conservative libertarians like Bob Barr and Ron Paul. But the party encompasses everything from anti-war Republicans to people that really don't care about anything other than drug decriminalization, to people that are VERY close to being anarchists - who very much like things like gay marriage (or the eradication of all marriages), pro-choice, pro-drug legalization, etc. The result is a weak party.

i guess you'd have to define what economic conservative even means... if it means pro-corporations, then libertarians are definitely not in that camp. a true libertarian doesn't believe the state should even recognize the existence of a corporation - so no corporate tax breaks, corporations don't count as "persons" under the Fourteenth amendment, etc

Well supposedly Bob Barr has undergone some kind of 'renaissance' with his ideals.

I do commend him for admitting his past mistakes in regards to the drug war though. Not too often you see a politician admit he was in the wrong to that kind of degree. However, he's still a politician, so it's hard to say how genuine he really is.

I have to think his nomination has more to do with his name than his supposed new beliefs.

Barr is a tool-bag... if Ron Paul was nominated, i would vote for him

I think libertarianism is a insane way on thinking.

The problem I have is, every libertarian thinks they're so above the political spectrum that they cannot be grouped into any one ideology. Yet the opposite is true, because every libertarian follows the ideology like they're reading talking points from a book. I know what every libertarian will say about a certain topic before he even says it. Even republicans have more variety in ideology than a libertarian. It's like their ideology is on train tracks.

Also (sorry if I'm generalizing, i'm going from personal experience) most of them are REALLY conceded when it comes to political conversations.

So do you think if the "libertarian party" gets voted in this is only going to effect social issues and not economic? Taxing any kind of enterprise is just a big roundabout means of taxing consumers without letting them know they are being taxed. They know and understand the math but they get away with it because people are stupid enough to believe that a company behaves in the same way that an individual does in the economy. It's just a "politically feasible" way to raises taxes on consumers. That is all.

The only logical place for a corporation to be taxed is by taxing its shareholders when the dividends (profits) are paid through at the end of each quarter. Those taxes are not passed onto the consumer and are rightfully paid by the individuals benefitting from economic value generated by the corporation.

If you really want to tax the "wealthy" more, then perhaps consider the dividend tax which is in the range of 15% right now. That would be the most direct method of taxing shareholders. The other method would be to reclassify dividends as regular income so they get taxed at the marginal rate. There are implications of both of those actions as well but atleast you'd be speaking accurately to say that these taxes currently benefit the shareholders of Haliburton more so than not.

hmm, no I'm not sure I agree with this - certainly in it's entirety. Let's say that you tax Big Nasty Petrol Company A £5 for every barrel of oil they buy. Is this passed on to the consumer? Yes. Is this passed onto all consumers equally? No. Those who don't drive cars - in most cases because they can't afford to - will not be getting taxed. Now, if you have a system like here in the UK where taxes go to pay for - amongst other things - public services such as the NHS then taxation IS leading to wealth redistribution. Perhaps not from corporation to inidividual but from rich individual to poor individual. If you are a libertarian this process can be referred to as theft - hence "taxation is theft". not just rhetoric then imo.

Yes, I love hip-hop, off the top of my head, I know fallingupwards84 and I believe notpatriotic also listen to a lot of hip-hop.

I'm one, but I only like certain good songs. I don't really like hip-hop albums either (except Bayani). I always skip at least 3-4 songs on every album. For instance the new Lyrics Born album, I only like about 4 songs and one of the songs is more Punk/New Wave than it is hip-hop. I guess I like hip-hop, but there is just so much bad hip-hop out there it is hard to find the good stuff. You have to dig deep (The new Common Market album is alright). Local college radio stations play good songs but that is about it (and even a majority of the songs they play are terrible in my opinion). I really don't like any mainstream rapper/group except Outkast and some Atmosphere (and atmosphere isn't even that mainstream).

I'm becoming more of one every day, but most of it is still shit.

Also, if the best use of a conservation officer is to sit for hours on a river and hand out drinking in public tickets, they should seriously reconsider our conservation budget. Our fish and wildlife are fucked if that tubby bitch is in charge of guarding them.

Can someone clarify drinking laws with regards to being out in the public?

People drink all the time on the lake nearby me and it doesn't appear to be an illegal activity as there are plenty of cops on the lake that pay it no mind as well as several beer stores with lake front docks you can park at.

I also know that it is also completely acceptable to drink while canoeing on this river in the north of my state. People bring coolers out all the time and get poo faced while paddling down the well patrolled route.

I've also never known it to be a crime to drink at picnic or camping areas on state parks.

How is drinking on a few rocks by the river any different?

I'm clueless on this.

I think it's an issue of selective enforcement. There is a place a quarter mile from where I was at that rents tubes and has tubes specifically for your beer cooler. They let you drink on the shuttle bus for fucks sake. They all sit on the same rocks that myself and friends were at. They didn't get a ticket, I did.

But I think that's the general rule. It's always illegal on public property (universities typically get a permit for tailgating on football game days - that's how it's allowed in that case). In most river/lake settings it just seems to be tolerated. I guess if you run into a limpdick conservation officer that has his panties in a bunch about not being considered to be a real cop, it's not your lucky day.

i really like it.

There are some good live videos and some of the interviews are really funny, especially the guys who hate Anti-Flag, the Less Than Jake fans, and Tom talking about sneaking onto Story of the Year's tour bus.

But yeah, ignore the politics of it if you want to enjoy it at all.

But before I moved back to Arizona (from New York) I had a really good job, and I went over the receipts later on when I was doing my taxes and found out that in about 6, 7 months in New York I spent a grand total of 245 dollars on groceries. I wound up saving the rest, with spending on comic books and records here and there. Priorities, I guess.

Keep in mind, I went into the listen with the expectation that they were the Jesus of our age (thanks to the raves I heard on this site), so it wasn't hard for me to be disappointed. as for not makin the playoffs, i'd love to cause of what you said. but, and this is a big but, and maybe i'm truly nuts, but i think if we somehow make it to October, the way this team is built, we have as good a shot as ANYONE to win it all. we're just as good as the Angels in a short series. i think you have to agree on some level.

i still think that if we can put together a full game we're the best team in the nl if not all of baseball. a team with johan, ollie, pelf, maine, wagner, wright, reyes, beltran, and delgado should not be just 5 games over 500.

dude, his ERA the last two year against the Phils, Braves and Yanks is 2.84 and he's 8-3.... this season? he's 4-0 with a 0.89, and that includes the run he gave up and the ND he got in the last Phils start two weeks ago.

and that one year he had in Pitt was astounding (04 i think) the great numbers he put up don't even begin to tell the story of how incredible he was.

Different strokes and all that. I highly recommend Ghost Stories, though. The last track (before the 3 secret songs) is one of my favorite Chris songs ever, whether it's from The Broadways, The Lawrence Arms, or Sundowner.

In my opinion, I really don't think there's one weak episode in the entire series. Plus the fact that they wrapped it up almost perfectly when they were originally supposed to have a full 22 episode season, and everything was intertwined and explained made it even more perfect. (Holy run-on sentence, batman.)

The “SOB’s” and “Making a Stand” episodes are probably the best in the series. Sure they MR F storyline went on a bit, but I don’t really think there was a weak episode in it, plus you’ve got to love the “walking on water” finale to that story line.

yea i wil agree that those two episodes you mentioned were good...

i just felt like they tried a little too hard, like all of a sudden Lindsay isn't Michael's sister but some adopted girl named Nellie... and Oscar and George Bluth kept switching places so much it was impossible to know who was who. i guess that was part of the humor, but i dont know, i just didnt like it as much

season three is amazing, though the first few episodes do drag a little. the godzilla mole thing with tobias and george michael however, was beyond hysterical.

The final 6 episodes were the best ones of the entire series!

Haha yes he did start out strumming the guitar while singing the first verse, then when the song started playing the whole field was cheering. Gang Leader For A Day by Sudhir Venkatesh

It's about a sociologist that befriended a gang leader and hung out with a crack gang for close to 10 years. It's really interesting and really well written in regards to character development. It's obviously non-fiction but you can enjoy it in a story kind of way. Everyone I've given it too hasn't been able to put it down. I read it in 3 sittings.

I thought Off the Books was good. It's all about underground economies and ways people in abject poverty manage to survive via creative/illegal means. I haven't read American Project. I think it was you who mentioned God's Middle Finger too, right? We need to talk books sometime haha... I'm a Sociology major now (well, just re-started school after an 8-year absence) so that kind of stuff is right up my alley.
