Sony has announced plans to release The Clash's legendary Shea Stadium performance on CD this October. Recorded at Shea on October 13, 1982, the set will include the band's entire performance as they opened for The Who on their "farewell" tour.
The tour came shortly after the release of the band's massive 1982 full length, Combat Rock.

Combat Rock gets a lot of hate around here and I can barely understand why. Sure, it's not their best album. But even at their worst (minus, of course, Cut The Crap), their albums are still better than most others'.

I've always wondered if this performance would be released. Also, I totally agree- this album does get hated on but its still better then most of the "punk: albums that have come out in the last 20 years.

Wow, my subtley negative editorialization has been spun into not-so-subtle positive editorialization. First of all, I'm a huge Clash fan and have been into the Clash bootleg scene and I can assure you that this is NOT a legendary performance. First of all, they dont even have their real drummer, Topper. Instead, they have Torry Chimes, who played on the '77 album and who displaced Topper in '82 after Combat Rock. Torry has nowhere near as much energy as Topper!! Second, this is a very short and predictable set by Clash standards, as around this time they were usually playing 2-hour sets full of deep Combat Rock and Sandinista cuts. I'm a little stoked for this and I dont want to complain too much, but this choice of dates is a serious let down considering all the amazing shows they played between 79 and 81. yesterday i listened to the clash box set straight through and had an oral orgasm. sometimes i need a break from them so i can come back and remind myself that they were one of the top 5 or so rock bands of all time. 1+ Reply
