Normally, we try to avoid self-referential/naval gazing-type stories like this one, but Max Bemis of Say Anything has shared some angry words directed at all of you for the small percentage of you who objected to his custom songwriting project.

Max explains:

Another thing that actually OFFENDS me, which is hard to to these days, are the people who are pissed that musicians make money. The strange, slow, old people on punknews.org and the few annoying stragglers on this website.

It is worth noting that the concept of making money was never a point of objection in the comments on Punknews.org, but some people objected to the notion of for-hire songwriting and the fact that the subject matter of songs was coming from paying customers rather than Max himself.

I'm all for fan stuff like this, Leatherface tried something like this once where they got a fan to help write the lyrics and vocal melody but I don't think it panned out. Leatherface didn't charge people though.

I think it's more the fact that he's asking for $150 for a song and some people (who i'm gonna class at this point onwards as 'emodouchefaggots') will probably happily pay that ignorant of the fact that these emodouchefaggots have a meaningless song. Like, could I pay him $150 trying to get him to actually sing (in a serious way) about Max Bemis sucking my cock? Fact is I've paid him, a job's a job... Basically, where's the passion?

I guess it's not the easiest of things to comment upon, fact is he wants to make money, which is fair game as I know I'd happily make use of songwriting to earn some good cash, however, as for meaning behind the song what is there?

I like the idea. I think its fantastic. The only problem I have is with him getting the full rights to the song, but even that isn't so bad... I mean, if someone writes a song about a newspaper article, they still get full rights, regardless of the fact that they "stole" the topic from a journalist.

I love Hot Water Music, Strung Out, Strike Anywhere, The Weakerthans, No Trigger, but I'd never want any of these bands to write a song about me or about something I asked them to. I like when musicians write music they are really passionate about and sing lyrics they really feel. Knowing that it has been written on someone else's request, even mine, would totally make me lose interest in the song and it would sound fake to me.

I am not really sure if even he knows who he's attacking in his statement. The whole thing comes off child-like in nature, like someone caught wind of his 7th grade science project, and objectively, mentions that the Earth revolves around the sun, not vice versa.

Now...in the words of Samuel L. Jackson, Oh you're finished? Well allow me to retort.
No one (or at least most) were critical of making money of music. I love when great bands succeed and even enjoy a few bad ones who have as well. My issue, as Aubin stated, is having fans pay $150 a pop to provide you with material to write songs about and then you retain the rights to the song. I'm sure most fans wouldn't mind, hell some would probably be honored to see one of their stories end up on a Say Anything album, but the point remains is you're accepting money for inspiration for songs you can no longer write yourself.
If you want to make it far how about promising that if any of these songs are released commercially the person who sent you the story will get a cut of the album sales? How about half of whatever percentage that song makes up (10 songs=10% m

He may own the writes but any songs he writes paid by fans are intended for the exclusive listening of the buyer. When you order a song, Bemis makes it a point that the buyer is encouraged to keep the song to him/herself and share it with whomever. He wouldn't be taking said song to use commerciallyon a future record.

Who says these songs will be put on an album in the first place? If Max wanted inspiration, he's got a million outlets from which to get it. He doesn't NEED fan input to write songs. Not a Say Anything fan, but it's just the truth.

they're giving him what? a paragraph or two. have you ever written a song? he's gotta create structure, rhythm, melody, everything that a song needs to make it a song. anyone can write a paragraph or two, decent songs are trickier. and this guy can obviously write songs. a year ago everyone loved is a real boy, and their shows are always packed, i highly doubt he'd have much trouble pushing out another album by himself. sounds to me like he's just trying to do something a little different. besides, 150 bucks is like, one crazy party's worth of booze. gone in no time. so why are your panties in such a bunch?

Yeah, exactly, If it was an EP, it would have been so unbelievably good that the sun would revolve around it, allowing half of the earth to have daylight all year round. That would have sucked pretty bad (thus: we shall thank those four youngsters for adding songs 7-10). But, I must say that freightliner almost reaches 220 years in terms of awesomeness, and so does turnstile.

i've always thought of bemis as sort of more on the side of the art than the commerce as far as musicmaking is concerned, so not only did the songwriting for money thing surprise me, but this is above and beyond idiotic.

for one thing, anyone knows that anonymous message board postings should not rattle the chains of serious artists (then again, serious artists wouldn't sell such soul-fulfilling songs for a buck fifty to bad haircuts populating absolutepunk). also, how you're supposed to sing sincerely about some girl's tragic tale about breaking up with her boyfriend after math class is beyond me when your relationship to said girl involves an e-mail and a paypal endorsement.

I have never even heard Say Anything, and after reading Mr. Bemis' comments, I doubt i'll look into them. Hey guess what? You and the rest of your band are paid musicians! No matter how popular your band is people are always going to bash your music. Along with a lot of other posters on this site i'm a cynical asshole, point is you need to just take comments/reviews/editorials etc..in stride and do what you want to do. I agree with your point, but people weren't saying that they disgreed. they immediately became arrogant hostile pricks and directly attacked Max for trying something. If an entire website started attacking you, personally, because you wanted to do something they didn't like, you would probably get on the defensive as well.

Is it any wonder he got upset? Read some of the posts and imagine being in his shoes. It's about time one of the musicians the org so desperately tries to belittle gave them a taste of their own medicine. Yeah, it was an immature comeback. You choose to be a pseudo-celebrity and choose to open up a "pay for play" program to the public then you choose to deal with whatever comes with it. I've learned a long time ago if you want to play music (professionally or for fun) learn to have a thick skin. Understand that not everyone will like your music or your decisions and that many will be vocally critical.

Now, what occurred here was an instance of people criticizing one aspect of Max, his hokey song writing idea. In return Max painted everyone on the site, commentors and non, with the the titles of "old strange etc". This is the equivalent of going into a restaurant and critiquing the decor, only to have the waiter go "All costumers are Nazis!" It's not very accurate and not very fair.
Furthermore, Max could have at least had the decency to be aware of what people were upset over. To sa

I don't know, I'm just seeing the same attitude from him as I see from the org every day. I find it interesting how poorly many of the users here are taking the retort.

I still don't feel as though he was attack everyone on the site. But that's how most of you are spinning it. It was a generalization, yes, but it was offhand, and hardly anyone even took the effort to write a civilized and intelligent airing of their grievances on the issues. they simply reacted with immature invectives, and it came off as extremely immature. This elitism and tendency of immediate hostility has always been a hot button issue with me. I have no tolerance for it. I'm not saying Max handled it the right way. I'll try to give you a decent reply. I think one point that hasn't been brought up in defense of punknews commenters is the fact that almost every post made on this site is an attempted joke.

I've never heard of Max Bemis until this, but regardless of which singer/songwriter tried to do this $150 deal, I think that most of the pn commenters would jump all over them, whether it was Jawbreaker or Ryan's Hope. The behavior Max criticized in his blog was no more immature than his reaction. In a retrospective way, his reaction justifies the original comments. If you want to take the high road and react to criticism, then do it with class and intelligence, or else you just "prove" the critics right. And this goes back to my original point that most of what was originally said was in the form of a joke. His reaction was less intelligent then even the dumbest posts on

Thanks. I agree and have stated that Max's reply was immature. You make a good point that a lot of the posts (including those I referred to) were intended to be humourous. but many of them weren't. I know this because I've been here a long time and am familiar with the attitude that exists here. Often time, users simply try to make some expression of superiority, and I find it very obnoxious. Yes, there is a humourous twist, but the attitude remains the same.

I think what Max proposes is his own business. I have expressed positive opinions about it, because I know that some people will go for it and received a great deal of happiness by having their favourite musician listen to and write a song about them. It's an innovative and interesting idea, and despite the steep price tag, the results will be more than worth it for those who do make the purcha

WOW. MattRamone (and many other members who post on this site) says at least 3 or 4 dumb comments on this site everyday that he would never say to the actual members of the band he is talking shit about. I have been guilty of doing this same type of shit talking as well. It's all dumb. The internetz is good, but all the shit talking that happens over the internet is dumb. It took me a few years of internet message boards and stuff to finally realize this (yes, I know, I'm not the quickest learner).

True, but there is a difference between expressing this opinion and immediately launching a string of hateful invectives. "I don't like this because (insert explanation)" would not have resulted in this reaction from max. But when everyone immediately jumped out with "fuck this guy!" "Write a song about what an asshole you are!" etc, it comes off as elitist. it gives no explanation, is unreasonably hostile, and basically says "If I don't like what you do, that means you're a prick". Also, with the absence of any form of explanation, it comes off as being dogmatic. "Fuck this guy" sounds more like "You suck just because", as opposed to saying why his idea is a weak or objectionable one.

The thing is, why does he have to diss people who don't like his initiative? It's like some magazine would write a bad review about their music and he's going like: "That magazine is shit, they don't know anything about music." or something like that. I loved it. Laughed really hard at a lot of it, was really impressed by Green's style choices, and was impressed with the action scenes. The tone was jarring, but it worked for me. It was more like the hard-80s buddy comedies with graphic violence (Beverly Hills Cop, Lethal Weapon, 48 Hours) than modern comedies.

See, I am am actually a more of a metalhead. BUT I love a pretty broad spectrum of fast music, from pop punk to thrash metal. I actually don't like much of anything ala Cannibal Corpse grind grind grind growl growl growl, cause that shit bored me to tears. But I love that Euro Melodic metal stuff. I actually hate the taking sides, like "I ONLY listen to punk" or "I ONLY listen to metal, punk is gay". Most the guys I have played with are one side against the other, but then flip flop.

The man is brilliant. Some people think he too cartoony, but he's a master of the form. The way he forms panels and the expressions on the characters' faces the way he lays out the page to advance the story are all dumbfoundingly amazing. He's also a great writer who understands people. Box Office Poison is his masterpiece, but they're all pretty excellent.

I think the story you're talking about is a short story by Camus called The Guest. It's part of a short story collection by him (i think) called Exile and the Kingdom.

SPOILER ALERT

Yeah the ending to the stranger was ridiculous. It put me in a mood for at least 48 hours that I've yet to feel again. I think it was a one time feeling that I'll never get back or understand. I have no idea how, but I know it changed me somehow. Concerning my own writing style, I've been more influenced by that novel than any other.

You can think of Algeria as France's Vietnam in the 50s. The actual situation is closer to Israel/Palestine in that generations of French settlers had been born and died there while perpetrating a genocide/apartheid combo against the native Algerians (largely Muslim) -- but its the same theme of imperialism and mass resistancel. Camus supported continued French colonialism (bet you can guess why) although he was exceptionally mealy-mouthed about it, something he remains noted for to this day. Its actually his "legacy" of sorts

Whoops, and a Fire Upon the Deep is also ridiculous. I don't want to say too much, but I didn't know sci fi novels could be taken to such "grand" levels.

All I think I want to say is that I've read many sci fi books and this one is the first one to blow me away in a while.

Also, I highly recommend NOT reading the bn description of the book. It ruins quite a bit. This is one book that you probably should go into it completely dry. Heads up though, this book is serious and realistic sci fi, and it's also long. It's a commitment, but worth it in my opinion.

on the contrary, the most unrewarding long book i've ever read was the stand by stephen king. 1200 pages and the ending was just plain abysmal.

Yeah, exactly, and Star Ocean too (as it's Enix, and they're the same now). That was a fucking incredible game. Also, sony should (in an extremely unlikely event) completely boycott the playstation concept and sell all licenses to nintendo, so FF7 and 9 could be released for wii as well

It's not as good, that's all. It resembles 10 way too much and the story of disc 1-2 (before it gets complicated) is a little too cheesy. I mean in 9 it's supposed to be a little weird, but 8 seems a bit too low budget sci-fi

For pure nostalgia reasons, SF1 is my absolute favorite too. But I honestly SFIII for the Sega Saturn is the best RPG ever. There were two more scenarios that never got translated but, the one part that did come over is incredible.

A little late I suppose, but just for the record, I'd like to say that I wasn't "bitching" about anything. I simply asked a question. Yes, I am well aware that most bands I listen to are extremely cynical (it's punk rock after all), and as you might have figured out, I myself am a very cynical person. I wasn't trying to imply that I am not cynical, and that I'm better than everyone else here. I was just curious, because sometimes I do actually get tired of all the negativity, and was curious if anyone else here felt the same.

I can see why you took it differently, though. Guess I should make the motivation behind my questions a little clearer next time.

I'd be interested to see what kind of agreement the person who submits an idea to Max, and has a song about it, has with Max. Does he have the right to record the song for release, and make money from it without owing the kid a dime? If so, that's pretty fucked up.

It is extremely lame of him to go bitching to another site that he knows we have had some sort of division with. Not to say I have anything against AP.net, but come on. Someone already mentioned "The Hot Rock" (my favorite) and "Dig Me Out" but I think "One Beat" in greatly consistent. Id say its on par with the Hot Rock where Dig Me Out is great but not as much a long player.

As for Bikini Kill - Pussy Whipped has some good tunes but look no further than The Singles Collection. Definitely when they were at the top of their game (sorry, Reject was rather disappointing compared to it)

As far as Heavens to Betsy ,Calculated was good but doesnt raelly stand the test of time.

Howabout go for a Team Dresch record? either of them really. If you like Sleater Kinney youll love this now defunct overlooked band.

I frequent punknews. org, and yes, I believe Hot Water Music is an amazing band. Amazing enough to play them many times over on my college radio show.

I also believe your need to attempt and put down a whole community is fruitless. You're going to keep doing what you do, and we're going to keep doing what we do. You'll be getting over your grief caused by people you have to attempt to justify with insults... I'll be listening to The Gaslight Anthem, Against Me!, Hot Water Music, and other "orgcore" bands... bands more relevant to music than you could ever hope to be.

What makes Hot Water Music cool is that they'd never do this kind of thing. Elitism has nothing to do with it. When I hear a song that I can relate to what truly makes the connection is the fact that the writer wrote about something I can relate to without knowing anything about me. "Lozee Rose," was a perfection summation of when I was struggling, but because I had no input on the song it reminds me that at one point or another the Draft felt the same when they wrote it and that in turn, there's potentially countless people who are relating to it at this very second.

If nothing else, what makes me so important that I should pay somebody to write a song about myself?

I don't remember people bashing Jonah Matragna when he did this a few years ago and if they did, he's a bigger man for not taking it personal.

There was a writer at Marvel a few years ago who pretty much ruined his career commenting on internet comments on him. People didn't like his story so he started bashing people in internet threads on comic boards, making himself look petty and psycho in the process and he hasn't had a gig with any comic company since then.

I think the lesson is, when you see people on the internet talking bad about you, just let it go (or AT LEAST don't be so specific).

Well, sales reflected the negativity, his books were canceled, and he hasn't written anything, at least in comics, in years.

I enjoyed Max Payne 1 but I fucking love Max Payne 2. The whole "film noir" style to the game was absolutely amazing. It is an incredible shame that there was no Max Payne 3.

I still think it is one of the most underated games in history. I still go back and play through that game once or twice a year.

Nice. I like it. I dont think there is anything wrong with what he is doing, it just seems like someone would have to be pretty dumb to pay him for a song. Here is why:
If this Bemis character (or anyone, even JKS if he were doing this) has half a brain he'd use any decent idea he comes up with for a real Say Anything song and write some other shitty song for the poor kid. There's no way he'd waste a good idea on this scheme, and you really shouldnt expect him to. This is the huge fault in his plan if you ask me.

A flaming prick the first day I met him, he was put into his place fairly quickly and realized he was being a total douchebag (basically everything he tries to show that he isn't), he was the very opposite of down to earth and honest.

The next day, he came by with a mess load of catered food that he grabbed for us and apologized to us and said he would understand if we didn't want to eat the food that he brought. He just wanted us to know he was sorry.

really the idea is a good one, but people are not offended muscians makin money that's why we still go to shows and buy cd's (well i do).....But max is sounding like a little brat on this one; he has made and will be making plenty of money from the music he makes, thanks in large part to the same fans he is now charging money to publish the music that means so much to them (us); and then buy the cd and buy the tickets to the show's in order to hear it (i know you'll just download it but the point is there)

Oh, and this is a blatant marketing ploy. Bemis know that his bread and butter is the ap.net, and that there has always been a little rivalry between the two sites. So he comes out bashing the org and it gets all the ap kids hyped on him and wanting one of these songs ten times more just to "shove it in the face of those strange, slow, old people at punknews." Also, he gets TONS of people talking about his idea, on these boards, other boards, in real life, etc. It's the "any advertising is good advertising" principle.

True story: I was minding my own business, sitting in the dining room of my apartment in Golden Hill. My fiancee comes home, and tells me that there is a crazy man walking around in the streets, screaming. We live in the kind of neighborhood where this kind of thing doesn't really raise eyebrows, so I don't think much of it.

That night, I go to borrow a microphone from a recording studio that's right across the street. They tell me that they aren't using it because they can't track for the next couple days. Say Anything rented out their main room and was doing rehearsals there.

Next day, I hear the screaming myself. I go out on the front porch, and who should I see but Max Bemis, screaming at the absolute top of his lungs into a cell phone. This goes on for about 45 minutes.

If Max Bemis really does have bipolar disorder, that's unfortun
