"Earlier this year, in May 2008, Dead Kennedys were awarded a Gold Record in both the United States and the United Kingdom for "Give Me Convenience Or Give Me Death." "In God We Trust Inc. EP." was also certified Gold in the United Kingdom. This is significant achievement because the recordings were all released on independent labels.Following the messy legal battles of the late 90s, the Dead Kennedys reunited in 2001 without vocalist and songwriter Jello Biafra. Ray, Peligro, and Fluoride performed with Dr. Know frontman (and former child star) Brandon Cruz singing. Cruz left the band in May of 2003 and was replaced by Jeff Penalty (a punk filmmaker known for documentaries on the Bouncing Souls, Youth Brigade and most recently NOFX's "Backstage Passport"). Penalty split with the band in March of 2008 and now moonlights as the vocalist to Black Fag. With Penalty and Peligro both leaving the band in this period, the group most recently featured Wynona Riders singer Skip and Translator drummer Dave Scheff.
On Dead Kennedys' recent UK and Californian tours, the audience reception was enthusiastic and genuine (including two new songs performed by the band). Thanks to those that came to those shows and for their encouragement."
The beleaguered Dead Kennedys have decided to hang up their touring boots.
With both bassist Klaus Flouride and drummer D.H. Peligro sidelined with health issues, the band is putting themselves on a self-described "indefinite touring hiatus." Flouride spoke on his departure earlier this week. Guitarist East Bay Ray will form a new band with the Wynona Riders' Skip, who was singing for the Kennedys on their last two tours. While the band has not announced a formal breakup the did phrase their recent years in a retrospective light:

By "Dead Kennedys" I assume they mean East Bay Ray and his cast of ringers. Dude is like the Mike Love of punk rock. I just wish he weren't my favorite guitarist. 2+ Replies

finally! its about time they realized that this shit has been dead for a looooooooooooooonnnnnnnngggggggggg time. i mean, yeah they've completely dragged the name "dead kennedys" through the mud a thousand times over but at least this will give their "legacy" a little breathing room.. thank God.

Just call it quits already. I hate it when once great bands try to drive a stake through their own goddamn hearts.
edgelife (August 21, 2008)
please hang it up entirely for the sake of your legacy. You are one of the most influential punk bands ever and 75% of the people that have heard of you have no clue your still together.

East Bay Ray should join GNR. It'd be fitting to join another ass-hat who doesn't know when to give up. 2+ Replies

Thank goodness.
Let's see them make a whole new album with just those two 'new' songs they played on the tours. Losers. I can't believe I bought their albums before I knew what went down. There you go, I gave you £56 and you can't even act like respectable people. As for Peligro I still think he's okay but only because I respect his drumming and his dreadlocks look awesome. And their 2nd and 3rd leadsingers deserve credit for surviving the shit storm that went their way and the stupid schoolgirl bitching that went on between Klaus and Ray. The new singer deserves nothing. The original Dead Kennedys were actually good so it's no surprise their albums and EPs went Gold. No thanks to Ray, Peligro and Klaus of course. Can't wait for Jello Biafra and his Axis of Merry Evildoers to release their album - Judging by the songs they did at his 50th show rest of comment | Features
