CNN recently posed the question: Is Guitar Hero saving rock 'n' roll?. According to the article "rock music" is experiencing a halo effect wherein young people who are exposed to new-to-them bands via rhythm games like Guitar Hero or Rock Band are then seeking out these bands' actually albums and releases. According to Billboard when Guitar Hero: Aerosmith was released there was a "40 Percent" jump in their catalog sales.
The article interviews Lars Ulrich of Metallica, whose Death Magnetic will be playing in GH, and his son. You may remember Ulrich for his earlier, outspoken rants against digital media and sharing services like Napster even though now Metallica's new single is both streaming at MySpace and is available on iTunes. What say you, Org readers? Do you think that rhythm games like Rock Band or Guitar Hero can help save rock? Would you expect a greater interest in punk if more bands like the Clash, the Misfits or even Rancid were put in? And most importantly, does anyone else pull out a real amp to stand on while playing? These games are just teaching kids how NOT to play guitar. Also, whatever happened to the days when you actually just "listened" to music? 8+ Replies

While I don't think it's going to "save" rock music (this looks like a job for Flashlight Batman!), it couldn't hurt and might help some old artists make an honest buck on their hard work. 5+ Replies

I really don't want to defend that douche bag, but wasn't Lars outspokenness against illegal forms of digital media? And technically, neither iTunes nor MySpace are sharing services in terms of digital media, unless in the case of MySpace you count the ability to add a streaming song to your personal profile page. 2+ Replies

i saw on the sword's myspace page plenty of people who claim to have gotten into them via GH, so that's cool. i guess. dorks. i personally hate those games, partially because i suck at them and partially because they suck. 3+ Replies

Videogames getting people into indie/punk music seems completely foreign to me (insert old and slow). 7+ Replies

i don't know if anything can help ROCK MUSIC until hawthorne heights are involved.

I feel sorry for anyone who felt compelled to buy Aerosmith. If that is the case, Guitar Hero is saving crappy geriatric rock, but should be used to expose people to "better" music.
Adlai_E_Stevenson (August 22, 2008)
I would actually characterize a 40% jump in Aerosmith's album sales as the exact opposite of saving rock n' roll.

"Is 'Guitar Hero' saving rock 'n' roll?"
Short answer: No. Long Answer: Rock doesn't need "saving" through another source of income. Yes Guitar Hero is nice because it gives bands a chance to earn additional revenue from a stream that isn't as easy to pirate. However, money isn't what I think needs to be saved in rock music. Earning $1,000 for having your song in Guitar Hero isn't going to make bad rock bands focus on writing shitty, easily digestible music. It's not going to stop labels from making awful contracts and cashing in on young bands or change the "throw shit at the wall and see what sticks" mentality. What Guitar Hero can do to help rock music? Introduce kids to some new (hopefully decent) acts. Widen exposure. Perhaps a Guitar Hero of Punk featuring great bands of early punk or a Guitar Hero for independent band show rest of comment

I'd like to say, it makes me happy that this article engages the user. I'm always looking at the 'Have your Say' section on BBC and Gawker media group stuff, and it's cool that you guys have done this. 4+ Replies

Well there have been some decent songs in GH and Rock band of the punk persuasion, namely "Salvation" by Rancid and "Story of My Life" by Social D...but those bands and songs really are at the head of the 'mainstream' punk. Dropkick Murphys have a pack of 3 songs for GHIII, as well. 1+ Reply

My parents totally just came into my room asking me to show them 2 girls 1 Cup. They were watching some tv show that mentioned it apparently, and it peaked their interest. So I did, they actually made it 32 seconds, which is further than I would have expected. 10+ Replies

A lot of people who play Guitar Hero are the types who don't really get exposed to music outside the usual channels (MTV, radio), so with this game they are hearing songs they either forgot about or have never heard before. It can only help the bands on it, and can only make consumers more interested in rock music.

I have to say that people who say "DUDE JUST PLA A REEL GEETAR" need to get their heads out of their asses, drink some whiskey and sparks then crank through "Cult of Personality" on GH3. Then get back to me. It's fun as hell. No, I do not think I can play guitar, but I do know that I can jump off my couch and fall into the coffee table while keeping the rhythm. 6+ Replies

I remember a couple of months ago I was at my uncle's house and my little cousin was playing a disney version of Tony Hawk (Disney character staking around settings taking from different movies, its actually pretty rad) and RBF's "Sell Out" was playing from the game, and I was just thinking about how awesome that was that my little cousin was digging the song without even knowing that there are different genre's in music. 1+ Reply

My outlook at it is with kids playing Guitar Hero and Rock Band all the time now, you're only going to have dedicated kids starting up bands, instead of every asshole with a myspace, and a pirated copy of pro tools. It seemed before the internet there were way less shitty bands, at least on the national scene, because in order to be a diy punk band at the time one had to invest a lot more effort and dedication then today.

How about that Aerosmith game on the Sega. (I think it was in arcade's too)
Dadudebob (August 23, 2008)
i kinda think of the games as working for your music, not satisfied with just listening but have 0 talent? pop in the game and just play along
SkolarX (August 23, 2008)
does rock really need saving? i mean yeah, shitty rap dominates the airwaves and store shelves but rock seems to be doing fine overall. rock bands can still make thier money doing what they should be doing, namely touring. real bands probably sell more cds at live shows than they ever would just through record stores (and not just thorugh adjusted soundscan documents)

Another thing that actually OFFENDS me, which is hard to to these days, are the people who are pissed that musicians make money. The strange, slow, old people on punknews.org and the few annoying stragglers on this website.

Guitar Hero will save rock 'n' roll when these pimple faced little shits put down their controllers in favor of learning to play a real fucking guitar. Until that moment, they're still just kids playing a toy video game. 2+ Replies

drugmoney (August 23, 2008)
i personally hate video games, but i will say that rock music is probably in a state of limbo. i mean the radio station down here still plays pearl jam nirvana etc... mainly older rock . these video games are helping the industry in some way, but they just attract kids that will just eventually lose intrest and go for what everyone else is lsting to. i still wouldnt go pay $500 and play these stupid games if they had music i listen to on em
Apeman_On_The_Moon (August 23, 2008)
Wow, some of you people are dense. Nobody plays these games to expect to learn how to play guitar. All you music snobs and old, bearded dinosaurs need to get with the times. "Waaaaah, these kids should learn to play REAL guitars, instead of some stupid game! Waaaaaaaah!" So I guess people who play Madden should try out for the NFL instead. Or people who play Call of Duty 4 should enroll in the Army. | Features
