Sonic Youth begins work on new album

New York, NY's Sonic Youth have begun work on a new album. The band recently completed their contract with Geffen through the release of Rather Ripped in 2006, and will be returning to an independent label. Says leader Moore to Rolling Stone:

"There's one label we are certainly going to go with at this point," he says. "But I don't think I'm allowed to disclose that right now. I don't want to risk having a shit storm. I've written a half-dozen song ideas. I try not to complete them so much. Last time we got together, we were creating sort of new band-zone-vibe sort of things. It feels great The last four or five records we did were just so compromised by that [major label] situation. But that's the way it goes.

This album will put the band's back catalog up in the 20s, including the recently re-released Goo [Deluxe Edition]. The band also just released a Greatest Hits record.

Yeah, Starbucks released a Sonic Youth Celebrity Compilation a while back.

Can't wait for their new album, Rather Ripped was awesome. I kind of liked Sonic Nurse a little more though.

About 6 years ago, I was listening to Todays Empires Tomorrows Ashes on my cd player at school, and a bunch of guys in my class came over and and asked to listen. I let them listen and they said it sounds exactly like The Offspring.

Since that day I've decided that people who aren't into punk rock just think it all sounds the same, from Blink through to Paint It Black.

Actually, thinking of some of the songs on that album, I can see where they would get that idea. The title track, back to the Motor League, and maybe a few others could sound similar to many offspring songs to many folks.

I started out with Propaganda and the Public Mind. It was accessible, but probably not the most comprehensive introduction.

Most of his "books" are essay collections and spoken word transcriptions; those that aren't tend to be unpleasant reads consisting of 90% quotes from other works. Unless you're mining source material for something specific, most of his best stuff is available online. Check out ZMag, for example.

There's an "anarchist" cottage industry revolving around re-printing Chomsky material that pretty much exists in the public domain already.

as great as that dino album is, i think you've got it the other way around. sonic youth's albums sound completely different from that era. they've progressed as a band a lot further than dinosaur jr has, but I'm not saying that's what dino wants to do either, it's just you've got it kind of mixed up

i always found bug to be kind of tepid. freak scene and post and don't are great, but i think the rest sounds totally lacking in energy, like they were just phoning it in.

in terms of SY, sister is my jam, though i love daydream too. but honestly, i hated daydream at first, it took a LOT of listens for it to really sink in.

Ok, here's what I bought here:

1) Pokemon Fire Red edition: Long story, I ended up at 5 GameStops trying to find this out of print motherfucker. It's like Gaslight vinyl for handheld nerds.

2) Antique Chinese tea set - we guzzle tea like old princes, so this seemed right

3) The Children of Charles Dickens, vintage print - We met during a Childhood in Literature clas, and our attempts to hooks our roomates up and discussions of David Copperfield eventually turned into makeouts and sexings and awesome dates. Today we picked out an engagement ring, so I guess it worked out ok.

Its really hard to compare dino to sy except for the first 2 dino album which were nastier than everything else they did. both bands are total heavyweights in different ways.
