Videos: Rage Against the Machine go a cappella in St. Paul

When Rage Against The Machine attempted to play a left wing rally at the Republican National Convention this week, local authorities weren't so sure it was a good idea and shut the show down. While a proper permit was reason enough to ensure Rage couldn't play a real show, the band responded by holding a breakout a cappella session.

I know someone who was involved in putting this together. The event has put them in a $30,000 hole, but they put together a huge event on the state capitol lawn. This was from that event. They had a proper permit until 7pm. It was an all day festival that featured Anti-Flag, Matisyahu, Dead Prez, and speakers. Rage was a surprise guest and the state troopers prevented them from entering the rally until 6:45pm at which point the power was cut.

AT LEAST acknowledge in the post above they had a proper permit.

The PN story here does leave out a lot of important info, such as the police blocking them until 7. But they didn't have a proper permit. The permit listed the bands that were to perform, and RATM wasn't one of them.

Unless using Anti-Flag's equipment somehow circumvented the rules of the permit, they weren't supposed to play.

Whatever. I support their appearance. I'm just trying to talk technically here.

I'm part of the organization that put this together. The permit DID NOT list the bands. It was a general permit to put on an event at the capitol. The actual copy will be posted soon at www.rippleeffect08.com. Please read the press release for the most accurate and up to date info.

Eh, I used to be WAY into the band (like balls deep) and it's mostly true. They're liberals for sure but they aren't anywhere near as "radical" (or active) as Zach or Tom. The bassist is actually much more about the music than the message (which is probably good to have that balance in there).

I 'got it' at the time, in retrospect, not so much. Hell, my girlfriend and I drove two hours in a 'borrowed' car in 1994 with to see them (we were both fifteen two permits = 1 license). In retrospect, it was a great show, but was the bragging right of being able to say I saw nirvana worth what could have come of it? No, not at all, now I'm much more into bragging about seeing the ramones.

Is it the fact that they used capitalist channels to profit off their leftist ideals? It's a valid complaint sure, but ultimately silly, if you ask me.

I mean we all live under capitalism, we can't change that, at least not over an extremely long period of time. To decry someone or a group of people for using such channels to get a message out is just silly. Isn't the idea to reach as many people as possible? To get people talking? If there's one thing RATM has been, it's controversial. That has cultural significance.

As much as I respect a lot of the anarchists, the communists, the socialists, etc. I've had vegan wraps with at NCOR, I still don't see how it really solves anything to preach to your own choir all the time. weren't you the kid that hyped on about "inside out" in your review? then you go on to hate on the band that in many was was just an extension of what went on at the tail end of that project (ie. RATM's name being taken from the title of one of the last inside out tracks)... sounds to me like someone needs to quit riding the pretensiousness train to "punk as fuck" land and understand that there are viable forms of music out there beyond what your local jaded record collector douche bag says is cool.

I was that kid. I admitted to liking Zack's lyrics. But really, his vocals and all the rapping and all the sounding the same on every record gets old. I never got the impression that they were an extension of Inside because unlike RATM, there's definitely more passion and authenticity; I get the feeling he tries too hard now. They're raiding Eyewitness Video continuously. Eyewitness Video's footage at the 2004 convention led to charges getting thrown out for hundreds of people because they exposed fraudulent police statements and the such, if I'm not mistaken.

The fact that this doesn't have our country up in arms is not surprising, but still fucking frustrating.

As a man, there is nothing I value before my family and friends, but as a citizen, there is no higher power to me than the fucking Constitution. More than any politician or social trend, it's what I'm loyal to and what I believe in. I know this sound corny, but when I see people violating it egregiously, I feel like I just saw my mom get punched in the face.

My main beef with Rage is that they were the one band throughout the years that were still "rabble rousing" enough to draw mainstream attention. They broke up, like most bands do, and thats fine, but when they came back it was to, "get Bush out of the office" near the last year of his term.

Where were they when the US invaded Iraq, or the initiation the ever so damning Patriot Act?

3/4's of them were making radio friendly rock jams.

They all still had their politics on their sleeves, but not a single one of them were being as adamant or vocal about it as they should have been, and the thing is I feel that America needed at least one person to stand in the flames when they were burning the hottest. I guess these dudes couldn't take the heat at the time.

But what I'm saying is, it's easy to voice an opinion thats 'popular' at the time, and shut up and stand in line when it isn't. I feel they are doing just that, and I feel too often people don't question enough. Take Barrack Obama, for example: What is he going to change?

Withdrawal of troops in Iraq? Thats all well and fine, except those troops will go to sleep in Iraq and wake up in Afghanistan.

He's obviously the lesser of two evils, but everyone gets so caught up in this fervor of "change" that they won't actually change anything. The illusion of change is much more romantic than the actual process of it.

If they cared as much as they were touting, and that sign of "Beyond Partisanship" on their stage was worth the ink it took to print it, maybe they would've reunited sooner when things were starting. It's like what FEMA did w

I think what it boils down to is that in 2004, no one felt like they had any real choices. You had that fucking joke of a candidate; John Kerry and that asshole G-Dubs.

This time around both parties remembered back to 2004, because the average voter can't, and remembered the whole 'choices' complaint. So now the Democrats threw in a black guy, and the Republicans tossed in a hot chick. End result: No matter how you slice it, this will be an historic election.

Thats the whole thought process behind the picks.

America works in patterns, all you have to do look at the past voting trends. I'm certain Obama will win. I'll get McCain face tattooed on my right ass cheek if he doesn't.

I agree, I am 100% sure Obama will win, but nothing will change.. It's just an easy way to increase the moral that the American citizens have lost over the past two obviously corrupt elections. With Barack in office, the American people can finally feel free to choose, but only where the government lets them.

I probably would have done anything to be there.

RATM opened my eyes to the fact that music can be political (because Bob Dylan was as far away from counter-culture as you could get as a 15 year old growing up in a middle class suburb—if your parents listen to it, it's not exactly revolutionary). They made me move away from the manufactured soft-rock on the radio and made me actively seek music that was political with intent—that music was punk, so basically I have them to thank for introducing me to PN.

Which is probably a curse, really.

i just meant that the whole idiotic mess was sticking with true hippie style. not that all hippies are violent, but that they usually have stupid ideas that contradict the point of their protests. i saw anti-flag at the plea for peace tour once, so youd think theyd try to wax peaceful, but the whole time they were talking about getting their guns and assassinating george bush. obviously thats the party line of these parasites, but youre not better than anyone else if you think killing is ok as long as youre killing the president.
