After focusing on CD and digital releases for the past few years, Sony/Legacy has announced plans to begin releasing vinyl again. Beginning this month, the long-running major label will begin reissuing Columbia, Epic, and RCA releases.
The first batch of releases includes mainstream arists like Boston, Blue Oyster Cult, Jefferson Starship and Cheap Trick, but also Lou Reed's classic, Berlin, and Social Distortion's 1990 album, Social Distortion. Future releases are expected to include albums from The Clash including the forthcoming Live at Shea Stadium. Sony Music Entertainment (82 comments)

Oh shit, if they start including digital downloads with the vinyl, I might have to admit a major label is aware of its surroundings. Eh, who am I kidding, Sony will never "give something away". 2+ Replies

CD's are fucking dead. Vinyls are like the cockroaches that survived the bomb that just hit the music industry. 4+ Replies

Yeah, but how many bands do I know with records put out by Sony? 5+ Replies

Another question this brings up. With a major label backing vinyl, will we start to see it become more common in retailers, or will they stick to an online venue? 7+ Replies

Sony/Legacy is one of the nicest, most down to earth dudes in punk rock. 1+ Reply

alright, this is where all the people who have been buying vinyl and whipping up interest in the format go to the major labels and say "gotcha! this shit is for old people!" and go back to strictly illegal downloads. that would be the killing blow. 2+ Replies

Are they still gonna cost $20? I miss the days when a record cost $8... 2+ Replies

The only problem I have seen with newly released vinyl in stores is that the price of vinyl lately have been more expensive as where the CD format of that same album is cheaper. I would used to only buy vinyl because they used be cheaper than CDs. Now it is the other way around. It sucks. I hope Sony/Legacy does not overprice their vinyls. 2+ Replies

Berlin is alright, I was hoping they were reissuing Metal Machine Music. Someone trade me that record!

I hope this isn't gonna be that 180 gram, $20 bullshit. I want the old floppy cheapies. 2+ Replies

One of the effects of these major labels jumping on the vinyl trend is the pressing plants are really backed up right now and guess who gets screwed? The independent labels who never stopped pressing vinyl are now having to get in line and what used to take maybe 1 month is now taking several months to get a record pressed. Every vinyl plant in the U.S is at least 3 months behind right now on getting stuff out. It's B.S!! | Features
