Travis Barker in critical condition following plane crash

MSNBC is reporting that drummer Travis Barker is in critical condition following a plane crash. The Lear 60 aircraft was departing an airport in Columbia, South Carolina late Friday night when traffic controllers reported seeing sparks from the vehicle. The jet reportedly failed to lift off, went off the runway and crashed into a nearby road. The Learjet was headed to Van Nuys, California. CNN has an image of the wreckage.

Two crew members, and two passengers on board were killed while two others were critically injured, including Barker. He was transferred to a burn center in Augusta, Georgia and is listed in critical condition as of this morning. The other injured party was DJ AM, real name Adam Michael Goldstein. He is also in critical.

The deceased have been identified as pilot Sarah Lemmon, 31, of Anaheim Hills, co-pilot James Bland, 52, of Carlsbad, along with passengers Chris Baker, 29, of Studio City, and Charles Still, 25, of Los Angeles.

Travis Barker is currently the drummer for Plus 44 and previously played in both the The Aquabats and most famously Blink 182

Yeah dude people are allowed opinions, but under this circumstance I think people have a right to call out this one - this is no time to express your displeasure over an individual; hes in critical condition and the last thing you wanna hear about him is some random no-name internet post person calling him an asshole. totally uncalled for.
And trust me condolances for the unfortunatly deceased are appropriately placed - this was about Barker.

Travis is one of my favorite drummers, I'll be rooting for him to pull through. Whether you liked their music or not, the difference in quality between Dude Ranch and Enema speaks volumes about his talent.

I know its a trite thing to think about, but this guy had some incredible tattoos. I wonder how much damage was done to his artwork, and also if it makes it more difficult to treat him. I'm sure a lot of us have been to the doctor and had blood drawn from a hand or from the legs because they can't tap the vein in your arm. I can't even imagine where they would have to run IVs, etc. on a guy who is so heavily tattooed.

Scott Raynor was no slouch..He played a more traditional punk style, with straightforward fills.

Barker is one hell of a drummer, one of the most talented I know for sure, but I wouldn't say he made Enema of the State better than Dude Ranch, he just changed everything about how the drums sounded.

I liked Scott too, don't get me wrong; and I liked Blink better when he was playing for them. I just prefer a more sophisticated style of drumming, and I also think that Travis was able to take some very mediocre punk songs and make them into something that really caught people's attention. If Scott had played on "Enema" I don't think it would have been nearly as successful because it wouldn't have had that extra something that Travis brought to the band.

I never gave an opinion as to which was the better album. I said the quality of the drumming was much higher on Enema. I don't think you can make a fair comparison between Travis era Blink and the stuff Scott played on. Everything up to Dude Ranch was pretty typical '90s pop punk. Starting with Enema, they had pretty much moved into the arena of mainstream pop, and were writing songs with the goal of appealing to a much wider audience. I think Dude Ranch was their best punk album, and I think Enema was the best offering from the Travis era, but no matter how you look at it Travis can (and has) outdrum Scott with one hand.

They typically won't puncture a tattoo because the ink can be poisonous if introduced into the bloodstream, and also because the needle is more likely to break in scar tissue. I know that, of the few times I have had to have an IV or have blood drawn, they have always used the veins in my hand because I have tattoos in both of my ditches. I'm not even heavily tattooed, it's just unfortunate placement. A doctor told me that if you have sleeves that go down on to your hands, their protocol is to use a vein in your leg that is located near the groin, and if that's unavailable they will move on to the neck, etc. but they will avoid puncturing a tattoo at all costs. If that's true, it must be really difficult to provide proper treatment without further endangering the life of the patient.

I said it's trite because there are obviously more important issues at hand. I feel for the families of the deceased, I hope that Travis recovers fully and can still play the drums like a madman... but I didn't see the need to post that because almost everyone that posts is going to have something to say along those lines. So, for the sake of maybe starting an intelligent conversation, I tried to bring up the medical aspect of it and compliment Barker on his playing. Both points have been belittled and heavily disputed here and in other threads in this topic, but neither was meant to be disrespectful, just food for thought.

Those other people were recreational pilots flying small 2-4 seaters. These planes ARE commercial planes. They're owned by private companies, not major airlines, who rent out their services. They're flown by professional pilots (often ex military or ex airline pilots) and staffed and serviced by professional people. It's no different than commercial flying, other than you and I can't afford it and it's not run out of major terminals.

Alright, I will agree with the statements that we are talking about a Part 135 charter operation and the above mentioned were flying themselves in GA planes (ironically, I fly out of the airport JFK Jr. trained in and I used to work and fly out of the airport he left on the way to death...Vero Beach and Republic, respectively) I need to interject the fact that SMALL AIRCRAFT ARE SAFER THAN BIG ONES and this is a prime example. What happened? I don't know. It'll take a year for the NTSB to write up a report and I'll wait for that before I speculate. However - there seems to have been a problem on the takeoff roll and they say the Lear didn't even get airborne. So the captain probably tried to RTO. Mid-size twin-jet with an assload of fuel (it was going from South Carolina to LA) and going over a hundred miles an hour (they rotate around 120 knots or so)....i don't care how good your brakes are. You're going off the runway. That doesn't happen in a small plane. You can stop a light plane in 200 feet. I did it daily for years.

Trust me, I'm an airline transport pilot and a flight instructor. I've been in this for years. All I'm asking is that people who know NOTHING about aviation (or even those who think they do but have no credentials) need to stop acting like they do. You're bumfuck morons.

And I worked airlines for a long time. I don't like flying on them at all because I actually know what all those noises are and I know when they're not supposed to happen.

If I was a musician or whatever where flying places is a regular part of my life, I would never take one of these private planes. I would always just take Delta or one of the regular commercial airliners. Those things rarely ever crash at all, but it seems these private jets crash all the time.

They don't crash all the time. Small personal planes crash all the time. These are essentially commercial aircraft, with expert pilots. Leers like this do no crash that often.
And, you don't really always have that option, to take a commercial flight.

Fucking upsetting to read as updates keep coming in. I saw other forums, people kept saying it's a "miracle". how the FUCK can 4 people dying be a miracle? So what if the survivors are celebrities? The others died, seems like no one cares. :(

This is really terrible. No matter what you think of the band's he's been in or the other projects he's done, there's no denying that Barker is an incredibly talented drummer. Having seen him perform several times in the Aquabats & Blink-182 days, I ranked him high on my list of favorite punk/pop-punk/whatever-you-want-to-call-it drummers alongside Josh Freese.

Here's hoping that he recovers, quickly, and thoughts and sympathies to the families of those who died. Accidents like this are tragic and no one deserves them.

I posted this above, but I thought it was worth repeating here. I mentioned his tattoos, but if you read it again, I was concerned about whether his tattoos would prevent him from receiving the proper medical treatment.

Obviously this is going to be a miserable time for the families of the deceased, and my heart goes out to them. I just lost my dad and my grandpa over the summer, both suddenly. Believe me, I can relate. A time of loss is no time to make light of other people's pain. At least I'm not one of the douchebags on here that said his music is terrible or I wish him the worst.

I could see the plume of smoke from my house which is maybe 5 miles away. I had no clue what it was from.

Regardless of any opinions anyone might have about Travis Barker, keep it to yourself. People fucking died. I guarantee if any of you assholes ever had to deal with losing anyone close to you you wouldn't be making half of these snide comments.

And from someone who has been seriously injured from burns, I can say after the initial incident there were times I would have rather died than go through that pain. Hands down the worst pain ever.

Hope the survivors pull through ok.

Blink-182 were my gateway into punk and a major part of my adolescence. Though many years have passed and my devotion to punk has waned since I've entered adulthood, my memories of that period of my life still warm my heart and I can't think back on it without thinking of Blink. I hope that Travis makes a full recovery and my condolences to the families of all who passed away in this accident.
