The Weakerthans, Hey Rosetta! win $25,000 each at Verge Music Awards

Winnipeg's Weakerthans and Newfoundland based rock band Hey Rosetta! have each walked away with $25,000 from the inagural Verge Music Awards. The awards were dolled out at a gala in Toronto on September 24th. The Weakerthans, who recently released Reunion Tour, won "artist of the year" while the St. John's based act won "album of the year" for their record Into Your Lungs. The winners were dermined by online voters and a panel of music programmers from XM Satellite Radio. The Verge is an XM station devoted to Canadian alternative music.

I'm torn. As many favorites as I have, the second 'plea from a cat named virtute' comes on I get a huge smile on my face.

Left and Leaving is my favourite album, but I dont think I can choose a favourite song. Perhaps "This is a Fire Door, Never Leave Open" or "Pamphleteer". I also love "Bigfoot!" off of Reunion Tour

I really cannot pick between the last 3 albums. They are all some of my favorites of all time.

I'll go with "Utilities" for song. That emotion in conjunction with the lyrics, that song is absolutely beautiful.

From front to back I'd have to say Reconstruction Site is their best. Favorite song is harder though, I'd have to back up the others in this thread by saying Fire Door or Plea from Virtute.

yeah they're all good, but Left and Leaving is numero uno by a wide margin for me. Probably Left and Leaving for song also. '....and every birthday card I threw away...' gets me every time. Though Tournament of Hearts has probably been the song I've listened to most lately. Reminds me of Minnesota.

Left and Leaving for the album because of what it represents in my life (cheesy, I know). I moved to Winnipeg just after Fallow came out and saw them a bazillion times in the next year or so when they were playing the songs from Left and Leaving as they were being written. I probably knew most of the album before it came out. Aside struck me as awesome the first time I heard it and I never grew tired of it almost ten years later, so I'll pick that one for favourite song.

Uh, I'd say Reconstruction Site for my favorite album. I remember when I first got it, I listened to it for a week straight. As far as favorite song... I think I'm going to say "Plea From a Cat Named Virtute," though if you asked me in an hour I'll probably say something different.

I just wanna say, not only is charlie hilarious, but just watch Mac's reactions to everything charlie does. I think that usually makes a lot of the jokes even funnier.

Their racists scene make me laugh for some reason. Like the scene where they were deciding to eat the dead people or not, and the scene where D brings a date to the bar who's black, and the guys instantly think their getting mugged.

i'd be so tempted to drop all my responsibilities and just follow the entire tour around.
probably my two absolute favorite live acts overall. other bands like Wilhelm Scream have way higher energy levels, but Samson and Finn are amazing lyricists.
