Tours: Ian Mackaye (spoken word/Q&A)

OC Alternative is reporting that legendary hardcore/punk pioneer Ian MacKaye will be hitting the road later this week for a spoken word/Q&A tour of Southern California. MacKaye was instrumental in the launch of Minor Threat, Embrace, Fugazi, The Evens and Dischord Records.

Can't say I'm the hugest Embrace fan, at least compared to Minor Threat and Fugazi (and Egg Hunt, and Skewbald/Grand Union... okay seriously) but Money is a really damn fine tune.

Embrace is called "the birth of emo" but it's really the downright preachiest Mackaye ever got. I still love it though.

However, when it comes to egg hunt, skewbald... (obscure bands he did that didn't record much), Pailhead is my favorite

Yeah, he was preachy, but I love the combination of the guitar, the melody, aggression, and emotion. I feel he never really gave all of that in Fugazi. I love fugazi a lot, but I just find Embrace a little more real.

Honestly, the kind of rhetoric that indie and old punk types go on about is tiresome, but Ian's a nice guy.

i saw him do this a few years ago in san francisco. he didn't come in with a set speech or anything, he just took questions from the audience and responded with a lot of really entertaining stories. it was a lot of fun.

the question was "what bands do you listen to right now?"

the response that made me get up and leave "hmm..the bands i listen to..no one has heard of.."

he was so smug about it. he's the john lydon of hardcore. he was in a very important band (minor threat) and then he was in a band that released some alright stuff but on the whole has released a lot of shitty albums (fugazi). go masturbate your ego to someone else fucker.

First off, the fact that he hasn't ever cashed in on his fame like other hardcore/punk dudes from that far back says a lot about his integrity, from a business point of view but a character point of view; this is who is, like him or hate him. He's not sitting on any fences like others would, according the trends.

Also would you rather he only preached to the converted? If one of those trendy fashion-orientated assholes at any of those big festival appearances actually picks up on anything Ian has to say about organising your life and taking control of it, I'm all up for it. It's not like he's suddenly going to appear giving out MTV Music Awards next month now, is it?

i can't recall him being anything but humble and nice when i saw him speak, including hanging out for hours afterwards to talk to people and answer additional questions.

and if you think fugazi ever released a shitty album, i feel bad for you.

also, maybe the reason he said no one had heard of the bands he listens to is because NO ONE HAS. he mentioned two when i heard them speak and they were both extremely obscure DC bands that didn't ring a bell with anyone.

you're waaaaaay off base. i live in dc so i see him around a lot. and he's one of the most approachable, down to earth guys i've ever had the pleasure of meeting. there's this free summer concert series in DC every year at Fort Reno park and he's always there, talking to folks. he'll talk to everyone and anyone. he does have a very dry sense of humor. but based on my experiences and the experiences of others, he's always been gracious and humble.

as for his comment, well the active bands currently on dischord, no one outside of DC really has heard of them or seen them. he was just being straight up honest, not a prick.
